The product, in the report: 1TB LaCie Hard Disk
I returned to my computer after approximately 1 hour (it was in “sleep” mode) and noticed a smell of smoke. My computer indicated my LaCie external hard drive had been disconnected without being properly ejected, so I opened the cabinet next to my computer (where the hard drive has been since 2011) and a small cloud of smoke came out. I saw the hard drive was off (no light) so I pulled it out and tried to pull out the power cable connector to the hard drive and it was so hot I couldn’t touch it. I then pulled it out by the cable. Upon inspection, both the cable connector and the hard drive connector were charred. My concern was what would have happened if I had not been at home to discover the smoking hard drive.
