The product, in the report: It was a 2019 Kindle fire, blue in color about the sixe of an average paperback.

I was cruising on a cruise ship in the Caribbean about 10 days ago. I had a Kindle Fire purchased new in 2016 in a canvas beach bag next to me. Whether it was turned on or not I don’t know but Iwasn’t using it and as I said it was in my beach bag. It was a sunny day and the the bag also contauned my [REDACTED] phone and a portable battery charger that was fully charged. I can’t sai how long I was in the sun but probably > 1 hr. All of a sudden brown smoke that smelled of burning plastic came pouring out of the bag. i immediately looked in the bag and saw the Kindle on fire and melting. I removed the un it from the bag and in the process ofmoving it the fire went out. Nothing else in the bag caught fire. I photographed to damage and apparently someone notified security who came to see what had happened. I told him and showed him the unit. He never took my name etc but he did take the Kindle and I haven’t seen it or heard anything from the security people since. Since i was at sea and didn’t have internet capability I waited until the next day to inform Amazon who sells these essentially small tablet computers. I received several emails all of which I believe I still have. I didn’t feel that they showed an overly great amount of concern for what had happened. Had I not been sitting next to the bag containing the Kindle I have little doubt but a larger fire would have occurred. Amazon wanted me to send them the unit but Security had basically confiscated it so that wasn’t possible. I sent Amazon the photos. After another email or two they finally offered me a $50 credit to purchased another Kidle which now cost over $100. I have checked and they have put $50 in my account.

The product, in the report: Kindle Fire Touch Screen

About a week ago I noticed what looked like a water spot on my Kindle Fire. It was not holding a charge at this point, either. A few days later, the spot was gone but there was discoloration in the display on the right side of the screen. The next night I picked up my Kindle and saw that the side was split open from a swelling battery. The device still works but I am afraid to recharge it because the battery is so swollen.

The product, in the report: Kindle Fire HD

I plugged my Kindle Fire HD in to charge it. Sparks started shooting out of the charging slot. When I unplugged it and removed the cable, the charging cable was on fire and covered in molten plastic.

The engineers in the extended family examined the Kindle and cable and concluded the problem originated with the Kindle, not the cord.

I contacted Amazon about the problem. They seemed unconcerned and did not want to examine the Kindle.

I am concerned because if this is a problem with aging Kindles, other people could get hurt. The only reason this incident resolved w/o injury is because I happened to be the one in the room with Kindle at the time. If it had been a child, and usually my children are the ones using the Kindle, then injury or property damage could have resulted.

I feel that Amazon is not taking these concerns seriously enough, since electronics should not suddenly burst into flame, even if they’re 2 or 3 years old.

Purchased my kindle fire in July 2012. I noticed a water-like spot a couple of weeks, and now the back of my kindle is bulging (noticed on 2/15/2015), which I confirmed the battery problem when I contacted Amazon’s customer service. However I was told my warranty was expired and was asked to buy new one (with some discount).

I received as a gift a Kindle Fire, first generation about three years ago, Recently, the unit was having trouble holding a charge. Shortly after, the unit began to split down the side, at the seem. IT had not been dropped or misused in anyway. As the crack grew, the battery can now be seen and it is swollen and expanded, so much so that it split the case in half. I have check the internet and this is a know defect with the battery as many people have reported and it is called out on the user site at Amazon. When I called for support, Amazon suggested that they knew of the issue and their policy was to extend the warranty to a total of three years. As mine is older, they said they could not help me.

I believe the the battery is at risk of bursting or catching fire, causing bodily harm or personal damage’

My daughter’s Kindle Fire was found to be bulging open on the side and the battery is swollen and leaking yellow fluid which I assume is battery acid of some type. When I searched online, I found that many other people have had the same issue. I contacted Amazon with my safety concern and was told only that I could purchase a new one at a discounted price.

My daughter purchased a Kindle Fire, in March 2012, she registered it using her email address. Last week while she was sleeping, the unit ruptured, battery expanded to about 5 times it’s normal thickness rupturing the case. Now it’s bulging out, looks like it’s about to explode. I’m concerned it may explode and spread toxic chemicals. I called Kindle and after being on the phone with customer service for an hour was told they could not help me because they could not locate her account, even though we purchased books for this same Kindle in May 2014.

The product, in the report: Amazon Kindle Fire

A few month ago, I noticed that my kindle fire was had an unusual bulge from the back of it and the screen was beginning to separate from the rest of the device as a result. I did some research online to see if this was happening to anyone else who owned a Kindle Fire and found that there were a bunch of people out there that were having the same issue. Turns out, that it is the battery that is creating the bulge. The bulge kept growing without the device being powered on or without it being connected to the wall charger. The concern is the battery obviously exploding or the Kindle screen shattering as a result of the bulge. I contacted Amazon customer service and they refused to replace the device because it was out of warranty. This is an outrage considered it is a factory defect. Can you help?

My first generation Kindle Fire right side cracked open today. The battery has swollen up causing the right side to crack open and be exposed. I have never wet or dropped my Kindle Fire. I always keep it on my bed. Today when I was going to curl up for my afternoon read I noticed the problem. I had used my Kindle earlier that morning and it was fine. I am very upset because I loved my Kindle. It does however turn on but I am afraid to use it because the whole right side is exposed.

The product, in the report: Kindle Fire (s/n:DO1E AOAO 2076 0990)

We own a Kindle Fire (s/n:DO1E AOAO 2076 0990) purchased in May 2012. On 7/17/13 we noticed a slight bulge in the right side of the housing. Within one day the bulge got worse and the housing began to separate. Within a few days the right side had split completely open and the glass separated from the housing. It has progressively gotten worse and on 7/31 the gap measured 14mm (.55”) at the widest point. The following day it forced the top of the housing to separate. We assume the battery is the defective component, which can be seen in the attached dated photos. Such a major battery failure could have lead to a fire. We contacted Amazon twice and strongly expressed the serious nature of the failure. We understand its 2 months past the warranty expiration, but the best they would do is offer $30 off a new Kindle Fire. We do not believe they took the matter seriously, even after stating it was so serious we had to report the matter to Consumer Reports and the CPSC. In the 2nd conversation, the woman at Amazon stated this she heard of one other such incident.

I have a Kindle Fire 1st Generation that I purchased for my daughter as a Christmas gift Dec 9th 2011. I however am the primary Kindle user. My kindle has never been dropped or been left in extreme heat or cold conditions. It’s never been exposed to water. I charged it usually at night as I used it during the day so it was charged according to the manufactures recommendations

As of a week ago approximately July 5th 2013 I noticed after I had used it and set it down for 20 mins when I went to use it again the devise had separated it’s front from the back. Since then it has expanded to an inch or more. I went to a [REDACTED] store today to replace the battery. They don’t carry replacement batteries for the Kindle Fire. The clerk in the store said he had never seen a battery expand so badly and he recommended I get in touch with Amazon Kindle customer service and he suggested I stop using it. The kindle still works and charges. My concern is with the potential fire hazard. I have been plugging my Kindle in to recharge at night while I’m sleeping. Since my conversation with the Battery Plus clerks and my research a potential fire hazard seems like a real possibility.

I contacted Amazon Kindle customer care this afternoon and was told my devise is out of warranty and that they could only offer my a discounted new or refurbished devise at a reduced rate. I feel this is a manufacturing defect on either the devise or the battery and that it should be replaced at no cost to me. After reading reports and complaints on the Amazons Kindle owners forum on Amazon I have become aware that this is a big problem that many Kindle Fire 1st Generation owners are having.

I have pictures I can send as well.

    Sincerely, [REDACTED]

I own a Kindle fire first generation that became slightly bubbled in the middle on July 4th 2013, the device was not plugged in or turned on at the time. I received this device on Dec 28th 2011 as a gift for Christmas. I contacted customer support on the 5th of July to be told they were not aware of any issues with is device. I went to move my kindle off the counter on July 8th and the device had expanded so much that you can clearly see inside of it. I contacted the support again to be told I must me the problem with the issue with my kindle. After researching issues about the kindle I have discovered that the kindles battery packs are expanding. I am worried that anyone using this device when this issue happens can get seriously hurt. I have a kindle fire that has worked fine since the day I got it, went to use it today 7/1/13 and it is all bowed out, the screen is popping off in the top right hand corner. Apparently it is a known battery issue that the battery pretty much explodes and cause the device to bulge and push out the screen.

It was fine last night when I was using it for reading, I powered it down when I was done and it has been off since this morning.

I contacted amazon and they know it is a known mechanical issue with the devices and told me to replace it.

My concern is what if I wasn’t home and it caught fire or something just as bad.

The product, in the report: Amazon Kindle Fire - e-Reader/Tablet

I purchased a Kindle Fire about 18 months ago. About a month ago, the lithium battery expanded and bulged with such force, it cracked open the case. The battery continues to grow and expand. I am very concerned of it causing damage or leaking. I have called Amazon who says I am out of warranty and there have been numerous complaints on this same issue on their website. They refuse to acknowledge there is an issue. If this were to explode it could cause some serious damage! Please help to make Amazon take responsibility for their faulty product.

Kindle Fire color tablet computer, purchased in April 2012 from Best Buy. Case apparently overheated and expanded.Electronics and software appear to work without a problem. The case expanded and broke open on the right side. I found several reports of this happening on Amazon.com tech support forum. This unit was not being charged when the case expanded.

The product, in the report: Kindle Fire first generation purchased Dec 2011 Serial Number: KC1FCY230111113

I have a first generation KINDLE FIRE that’s 17 months old and used only occasionally (purchased Dec 2011 when it just came out). I charged the device last week using the charger that came with it, and noticed the edge of the tablet split open. At first I thought it was just a problem with the adhesive, but after 2 later battery charges i observed the following: the center of the tablet now has a bulge (almost double the thickness of the tablet), the area of the bulge is very hot while the device is charging, and the casing of the kindle eventually gave and split open on the right side. I checked amazon.com and other websites to see how I can get the kindle serviced. I read that the same problem has happened to other kindle owners, as early as May 2012, and that it is a problem involving a defective battery that could leak/explode with continued use. I called Amazon’s customer support and was told that because my device is out of warranty (they offer a 1-year warranty), they can only offer to sell me refurbished kindles. I was told that they do not have a repair service system in place. What was very shocking is that customer support sounded as though they have not heard of this problem being reported before, when i fact a lot of people have complained about already. I am very upset that the device was not recalled immediately, and amazon refuses to replace the device now that it is out of warranty - a convenient excuse for them. The first generation kindle fire must be recalled as even children use and play with this device.

My Kindle Fire from Amazon was 14 months old when the battery began swelling and bulging. It is very strange and when I called Amazon they just said they had never heard of the problem. Also too bad it is out of warranty. Buy a new one they advised. I researched on line and alot of people having the same problem and I believe they need to recall this product! An exploding battery can cause injuries!

While I was using my Kindle Fire it began to make popping noises. I shut it off quickly and then it popped once more and sizzled. The casing expanded and the face of the device peeled up on one corner. I did not have the device plugged in while this was happening, it was just running off of the battery. When I called Amazon about this, they said that it was out of warranty and there was nothing they could do about it. I saved the device in case anyone wanted to look at the damage and determine what occurred. If this had been charging, or I had not turned it off quickly, I am afraid that it may have caused a fire.

A fire occurred on a bed with a sleeping bag on top of foam mattress. A Kindle Touch was on the bed and had been there about 24 hours. It is not known if the device was in the sleeping bag or on top, but possibly on top. It was probably on. The fire was discovered early, so was confined to bed and small amount of furniture. Heavy rolling fire on bed was obsereved on discovery. Owner used garden hose before FD arrived. The device was not plugged in. Electricity was not a factor. No other source of ignition was present. The device was retrieved. Another possible device was also retrieved and a charge wire for a cell phone, which was not plugged in.

Kindle 2 power cords are disintegrating. The insulation around the wiring is falling off. I own a kindle2 and have two power cords, both are losing the plastic outer coating in chunks and dust. I seArched the customer forum and there were over 500 posts regarding this problem. Apparently, customer service claims they have never heard of such a thing.
