How badly anyone was hurt

  • No one hurt 3 CPSC: Incident, No Injury

As each report says it, in short words; CPSC’s own words are under each.

The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

The product, in the report: Bronze steel case, 15 inch screen, Hp spectre x360 convertible model 15 df0013dx Sn 5cd9035z0p

The battery in my hp laptop swelled to 3 times it’s normal size during normal use. This caused the electronics in the unit to become compressed. All of this creates a potential fire hazard due to a short circuit.

The product, in the report: HP Spectre x360 - 15t-ch000 CTO (2018) premium laptop Model 15t-ch000 CTO

HP SpectreX360 15 (2018) laptop suffers from a swollen battery. HP states this is not a safety issue (https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c05640567) but instructs to immediately stop using the laptop. Swollen battery causes laptop frame to bend and trackpad and various keys are now unusable. HP refuses to replace battery at no cost because it will not honor the Extended Warranty purchased for the computer and only offers to sell a new battery. Apparently, HP has recalled laptop batteries of other models for the same issue. I’m very concerned that the battery may explode and cause collateral damage and injury.

The product, in the report: Laptop computer HP Spectre x360-13-4002dx

I purchased a HP Spectre x360-13-40002dx August 2015. I use this laptop for business travel and presentations. Although the computer is 2 years old (out of warranty) it only has about 50 hours of computers use. Today, I started it up for a presentation and it died after about 2 minutes. I had borrow a computer from my client to continue with my presentation. When I returned home I tried starting the computer up again. It started but then died again 2 minutes later. It would not take a charge, charging lights did not go on. I then smelled an electrical burning smell. I removed the cover of the laptop and discovered that a portion of the motherboard had melted and burned in addition to a spot of the cover that burned plastic.

I researched online and found at HP’s own site dozens of customers with the same problem as I had. HP it seems did fix some of the customers laptops for free, when I called to report the issue all they could say is that I was out of the warranty period for the fix to be covered by HP. I could pay $700 to have it fixed (a new one costs about $1,000). This was not going to work for me. I might as well buy a new laptop (which I did. Not an HP).

I am concerned with the number of times this has happened and the safety of these computers in people’s homes. What happens if it happens at a business or home and noone is around to smell that the computer is burning and lights the business and home on fire?
