The product, in the report: Black, 2012 HP pavilion laptop
Last night we had an incident with my 2012 HP pavilion. My husband and I were sleeping when our cat started banging on the door. This only happens in the morning when we’re waking up, so we ignored it. The second time I heard a loud noise. I got up, opened the door and saw light coming from our living room. I hurried down there and my laptop was on fire. I ran to the laptop, grabbed a blanket that was thankfully on the couch right next to it, and started hitting the laptop with it to stop the fire, I then wrapped the laptop with the blanket, unplugged it and told my husband to open our back door, because it started to smoke really bad, and I placed it outside. My husband then told me to hurry back in our room because I am 19 weeks pregnant and didn’t want the smoke to harm the baby, he then proceeded to the place where the laptop had been, and the battery had stuck to the carpet. When he removed it from the carpet it caught on fire in his hand, so he hurried and took it outside. Thankfully only the patch of carpet where the laptop had been is damaged. The burn went straight through the carpet and it is black. My husband placed baking soda on top of the burned patch, just for precaution. Apart from inhaling a lot of smoke, none of us got burned. We have never had problems with this computer in the past. When it overheats it turns itself off, which is exactly what it’s supposed to do. It should have done that this time too.

The product, in the report: HP Pavilion laptop computer 17.3”Amp Elite Quad-Core A8-5550M/4GB ddr3/750GB Hard Drive/Anodized Silver/Windows 8
I was using my laptop while resting in bed & fell asleep. When I awoke, I had a large blister (the scar is 1 1/2” X 3/4”) on my right thigh, where the battery edge of the computer was resting. I just thought I was somehow at fault as I had never used my computer this way and was unaware of how hot laptops could get.
I have always felt the computer ran hot, but until I received the first alert to battery overheating, I submitted my computer and the recall reply was that my computer was not part of the recall. I purchased a metal frame to hold the laptop and am very careful now with how I use it.

The product, in the report: Black Laptop. 12 inch
We had the laptop plugged into the wall outlet and charging. We were using the laptop and the unit began to smoke out of the rear corner. We disconnected the AC power. Then removed the battery from the unit. We were able to remove the battery to stop the fire from starting. Black thick smoke was visible. The battery then exploded when it was outside. The parts flew 30 feet away. All the time many people could have been injured in the building.

The product, in the report: 17” HP Pavilion dv7 laptop with black/silver case
Dear Sir or Madam,
I have a Hewlett Packard Pavilion dv7 laptop which I purchased in February, 2012. Yesterday, 5/20/14, the laptop was on the top of the desk in my home office, free of obstructions to its ventilation and turned on as it usually is.
I left for work, and when I came home after an 8 hour day, my house smelled of burned plastic, and the smell got stronger as I reached my home office.
The laptop was off (“dead”), and it was apparent to me that it had suffered a catastrophic failure where its internal components had melted down due to extreme heat. Evidence of this heat can even be seen on the laptop case exterior and my desk which now has a spot on it (under the laptop) where before it had none.
I have twice attempted to report this incident to HP, but in my opinion, they are not taking this seriously, because the first time they put me on hold so long -- after I told them I was lucky my house didn’t burn down because of this -- that I finally gave up and hung up. The second time, I attempted “social media shaming” by posting this on HP’s page on Facebook, and they did eventually respond asking me for my product serial number, but nobody’s called me back after a long time.
I don’t imagine inhaling this burned plastic and other toxic chemicals which are contained within laptops was very good for my or my wife’s lungs.
I am very lucky that my house did not burn down.

The product, in the report: HP Pavilion dv9700 Notebook and Lithium Ion battery
My HP Pavilion Laptop and battery over heat and burn my skin if it is on my lap. The notebook overheats and shuts down causing me to lose data. It is painful to use my notebook in my lap due to the extreme heat emitting from the notebook and battery. I have checked to see if my battery was on the recall list and it is not, but it still gets dangerously hot. My warranty is up on my notebook, and I’m not quite sure what to do, I tried a new battery but the notebook itself is overheating still, even on a flat hard surface, or propped up. I don’t know how to make it stop overheating and shutting off. This has been a reoccurring problem for months now.
