(08/20/2026): I would like to amend my report to include that the laptop fire caused by lithium battery could have burned me or any user or even caused property damage (i.e. burn down house if it occurred while I was not around). I feel like this is sufficient risk of harm that could justify a reported incident.

The product, in the report: Personal Computer - HP Omnistudio X all in one 27-cs0055t desktop PC
HP Omnistudio X all in one 27-cs0055t desktop PC . I pushed the button on the back of the computer to turn it on and the monitor screen fell forward off the stand and onto my keyboard on my desk. It is a very heavy unit and if it would have landed on my left hand it would have caused injury. I have a very sturdy and large desk but if this would have fallen off a desk and onto someone, it could have caused injury. Perhaps an elderly person or a kid playing video games. I searched this unit on the internet and other people have had this problem. A person filed a claim with you. [REDACTED].
UPDATED ON 2/17/2026: [After many many many e-mails and calls to hp.com I got hooked up with [REDACTED]. I explained the whole situation to him. He had me send my complete unit to HP’s engineering team to evaluate and determine the root cause of the reported stand failure. In exchange for allowing HP to complete this evaluation, they gave me a new replacement device with slightly upgraded specifications. My computer guy and I set up the new unit and this time there was a hearable click when he attached the screen to the stand. It has been several weeks now and everything is OK. We drew a line where the screen attaches to the stand so I can look at it daily to make sure the screen has not moved. So far it is staying in place. Going thru this has been a nightmare. ]

No one hurt Made May 21, 2024, sent to the company May 24, 2024, published by CPSC Jun 10, 2024
The product, in the report: It is an HP Pavilion Notebook. Product No. X3T20UA#ABA. The ruptured battery was removed and disposed of as hazardous waste. The ruptured battery was labeled as follows: HP BP02XL, Number 849909-850, MFG DATE 2016/12
We recently encountered a dangerous situation with an HP Pavilion Notebook/Laptop (model 15-aw053nr) that nearly resulted in an explosion, fire, and personal injury. During normal use, the HP Notebook began to automatically charge its internal battery which had been latently degrading unbeknownst to the consumer. This resulted in a loud pop, a cracked notebook case and a ruptured lithium ion cell. The consumer had just seconds to unplug the notebook and place it on a non-flammable surface; otherwise a burn, fire, or explosion likely would have resulted. Since 2016, internal lithium-ion batteries made for Hewlett Packard devices have been affected by several inherent design and manufacturing issues that substantially affect the safety of consumers. The issues have prompted ongoing and repeated expansions of current battery recalls for HP notebooks. We regularly check the device’s notification center and also run the complimentary HP Battery Recall Utility software on a regular basis. The previous industry design standards made it possible for consumers to easily view and proactively remove batteries if showing visible signs of degradation. CPSC needs to investigate the surrounding issues including; (1) The average consumer no longer has access to inspect the device battery, (2) The notebook continues to automatically charge a degrading internal lithium-ion cell, potentially creating a life threatening situation, (3) the device fails to notify the consumer when the battery is failing, and (4) The notebook fails to detect and automatically cut power to a dangerous battery. We feel as consumers that the agency needs to critically review and update safety and design practices. This needs to ensure the prevention of a devestating catastophe related to these internal lithium-ion batteries, especially considering that these products are designed to be placed on or near the consumer’s body. As an individual with disabilities, the consumer received help with this report.

Hurt, care not known Made Sep 3, 2022, sent to the company Sep 8, 2022, published by CPSC Sep 22, 2022
The product, in the report: HP SPECTRE X360 CONVERTIBLE PC 15-BL075NR This is a HP Spectre x360 laptop 2017
I have a HP SPECTRE X360 CONVERTIBLE PC 15-BL075NR laptop that I use regularly. My laptop is built to handle processes they may take up more ram and cpu. I was playing a game of [REDACTED] when my laptop starting to get heated. This is a usual thing, but lately it has become to levels of heat where I can’t use my laptop for an extended period on my lap. I decided to use my desk more to help air flow and to hopefully cool it down. Even with this I could hear my fan blowing hard and feel my laptop getting to high heat levels I would continually pause close my laptop . Twice yesterday my laptop had got to heated levels very fast without big programs running and my laptop shut off. I grabbed my laptop and it burnt my palm where it’s still stingy hours later typing this message. My laptop shutdown I’m guessing due to heating levels and now I’m worried to use it again. I will update this after I feel comfortable using it again.
Report updated: I wanted to update my report of the product. I put no one is hurt or injured, but in my original summary I described that I was burned after I picked up my computer once it overheated. I assumed because I didn’t go to the doctor for it I couldn’t include it. It was a minor burn that I put [REDACTED] on it and cleaned with soap and water afterwards. I think the potential for injury could have been greater. My laptop continues to overheat to what I believe are irregular levels while using games.

The product, in the report: Hewlitt Packard HP Spectre x360 convertible 2018, Black, 15 inch, 14 x 10
Bought a HP Spectre 360 in late 2018. The product began to warp and bloat. Found out it was the battery that started to bloat in about a year. Multiple people have had this problem. the company refuses to do a recall or even give consumers new batteries. They sold countless people a product, that many consider a long term investment, and they knew would malfunction in less than two years. Multiple people have had this problem and the company has a history of defunct batteries in their products. This bulging battery issue has cause peoples keyboards, mousepad, and other functions to become inoperable. The company refuses to address the issue, or add the product to its recall list. Here is a link to people experiencing this issue. [REDACTED]

No one hurt Made Mar 6, 2021, sent to the company Mar 19, 2021, published by CPSC Apr 2, 2021
The product, in the report: HP SPECTRE X360 - 15-CH011NR internal battery (part # 928372-856) Model 15-ch011nr UPC 0192018903555
The battery on my 2018 HP Spectre x360 (HP Battery 928372-855) laptop, which I have since replaced, would quickly overheat after only an hour and a half of use, and became so bloated that it eventually split the case. When I initially noticed the case was splitting around August 2020, I thought it was because the screws became lose. I took it to an IT person for repair and was told the battery inside had bulged and expanded so much it split the hard case. I was told to immediately stop using it, and to contact HP. He speculated that the battery had likely started expanding months prior. The IT person also said it is highly unusual on such a reasonably new brand-name laptop (2 yrs) of moderate use and believe it to be a manufacturer’s defect and was a safety risk. I contacted HP and although they initiated a battery recall with some other models, they told me they did not with this particular model and claimed a bloated battery is not a safety issue. IT professionals with whom I’ve consulted strongly disagree and contend the heat and gas emissions can pose safety and health issues to users. It’s also evident from HP’s own user forum that this is a common issue and those users who continue to use their laptops despite the bulging and overheating may be exposed to harm. I believe this is especially dangerous because most users who purchase HP laptops would not think they would have to replace their batteries within the first year and half to two years of purchasing it and may not recognize the damaged battery since it wouldn’t be apparent until their case splits. Further most would not immediately stop using their laptops even if the defective battery is noticed, as the laptop would still function. I have since replaced the battery and a comparison between the new and old original battery, showed the original to three times its size. When I had the original battery, I did not leave my laptop plugged in all the time and generally not when I’m using it, I used the appropriate charger, I shut it down daily, used vented laptop tray, and was not negligent at all in the care of my laptop. A less careful user can easily be put in harm’s way with this laptop’s defective battery. Although I have replaced my battery, I felt compelled to alert you of the potential hazards of keeping these batteries on the market and HP’s refusal to recall them.

The product, in the report: HP Pavilion Model 15-au063nr
The problem was the battery in an HP Pavilion Notebook (15-au063nr). I recently noticed that the keyboard was acting funny. It would sometimes just fail to register a response from the keys. I then noticed that the left side of the keyboard had raised up and even unattached itself. I was aware of the HP battery recalls but was informed that my laptop was not affected. I have computer experience so I removed the battery. It was nearly twice its normal size. It had expanded so much it pushed the keyboard up. It did not explode yet, but I am afraid what might have happened if I had not found it. I replaced the battery but the computer has not operated properly since. I was not injured, but the computer is nearly useless.

The product, in the report: Hewlett Packard Notebook, orange in color.
The consumer stated that she found her Hewlett Packard laptop burning on top of a mattress in her bedroom. The consumer stated that she extinguished the laptop and mattress, removed the laptop from the mattress, and placed the laptop in the sink to cool. The presence of thermal damage to the carpet in that bedroom was noted by the Fire Marshal and stated by the consumer to be the result of the hot batteries falling out of the laptop as she removed it from the mattress. The Fire Marshal ruled out any natural weather phenomena and established that the physical characteristics of the fire damage to the bedroom carpet, mattress, laptop, and laptop batteries were consistent with an electrical malfunction within the laptop.

The product, in the report: Hewlett Packard (HP) Spectre x360 laptop, Model # 13-4105DX. Battery is Model # 789116-005.
I purchased an HP Spectre x360 laptop approximately 4 years ago. Last year, I noticed my laptop was bulging out from the top and bottom where the internal battery is located. When researching online, I found numerous similar complaints about swollen batteries on their HP support community website. I called HP about the issue, however, because the laptop is past the warranty date, they wouldn’t offer any support. I also checked whether my battery is on the HP battery recall list, but found it wasn’t. The battery swelling has become progressively worse and I’m concerned that the battery might explode or catch fire.

The product, in the report: The laptop is grey 12” long, 8 1/2” wide it has a touch screen capability. I purchased it approximately 4 years ago.
I was working on my HP laptop while sitting on my bed. It was plugged into the outlet to charge. My stepdaughter sat next to me on the bed and we started watching movies together. I fully shut down my laptop and placed it on a pillow right in front of me. It remained plugged into an outlet. Suddenly there was a loud burst and pop. The laptop was sparking. My stepdaughter jumped off the bed to run away and her leg caught the cord and forced it to unplug from the outlet. I ran a grabbed flour and dumped the flour on the laptop to stop the sparks and smoke. My right leg got a very shallow scratch from the sparks that stung the rest of the night. The laptop burned a deep hole into the pillow it was on.

The product, in the report: Hewlett-Packard-packard monitor
I have a hp 2211x led monitor serial# cnk1120ys8 which I purchase on 11-15-2012. I was sitting in a room with my computer on when I heard a pop from the computer monitor which went blank. Within 30 seconds smoke started coming from the back of the monitor. I tried turning off the monitor by pushing the on off button on the monitor but this did not stop the smoke coming from back of monitor. I immediately then unplug the monitor from the power source and the smoke stop. Removing the monitor and looking at the back were the power cord goes into the monitor you can see the cord was starting to melt from the heat. If I had not been in the room at this time I feel a fire would have stated. I don’t know if this is an isolated problem with this monitor or if other consumers have had the same problem. If I had known there was a potential fire problem with this monitor I would have replaced immediately. My concern is that other user of this monitor should be made aware of this possible fire problem.

My Hewlett Packard laptop pavilion DV6 while charging caught fire in my home on my work desk. I quickly discovered the fire because of the smoke alarm, I smothered flame. Grabbed the pc ran it outside luckily, because it re-ignited and shot projectiles 20 ft. into air and surrounding areas. I contacted HP twice since incident, provide my information and was told a return contact within 24-48 hours. It’s been 10 days no contact. Awful customer service considering the severity of this product failure. Not only is the PC ruined, I don’t have a working computer, there is property damage in my home and outside.

The product, in the report: HP Spectre X360 2-in-1 laptop
I was using my HP Spectre X360 2-in-1 laptop the same way I always use it when, without warning, I heard a ‘pop’ noise come from the laptop followed by the laptop suddenly losing power. The laptop was not plugged in to an external power source (standard wall outlet). After plugging it in and trying to turn it back on without any success, I unplugged the laptop from the external power source and removed the access panel on the bottom of the laptop to see if a battery cable might have come loose. After opening it I noticed a small burn mark on a sticker on the motherboard - the same place many other HP Spectre X360 owners have reported seeing burn marks. After plugging the laptop into the external power source again the laptop started sparking at the spot of the burn mark. I quickly unplugged the laptop from the external power source and put it down on a flame proof surface (granite) for fear that it might continue sparking and possibly catch fire.
I purchased this laptop brand new from a BestBuy store on 4/23/15.

The product, in the report: HP Pavilion Model #J9H81UA AC Power Adapter Model #740015-002 AC Power Cord Model #LS-18M
Purchased HP Pavilion from Sam’s Club approximately a year ago.
A few months ago, I began noticing that once the computer became fully charged, the AC power adapter (black box) would suddenly get very hot and a repeating popping/clicking noise could be heard from the black box. It would stop once it was unplugged from the computer. Sometimes, once charged, the computer’s fan would come on (high) and the computer would run very hot. These issues, too, would stop when I unplugged from the AC power adapter/AC power cord from the computer.
The model number for the AC power adapter is 740015-002. The model number for the AC power cord is LS-18M.
The AC power adapter and the connecting AC power cord were always, when used, plugged into a surge protector.
The last time the computer reached 100% charged, all issues happened (popping/cracking noise, hot AC power adapter, hot computer/fan coming on). At that point, the HP laptop’s screen went black while the keyboard stayed lit. I immediately unplugged the power cord from the computer and then from the wall. I also forced a power down of the computer. The AC adapter has a slight burn smell.
The computer powered up successfully, after a very long restart cycle. The computer seemed to be fine (although in trying to research the problem, the battery ended up being drained so full testing could not be done). The AC adapter and AC power cord are dead.
Reported the issue to multiple HP representatives. I was told only [REDACTED] has been recalled so I would have to buy new parts if I want to use the computer. It has cost me over $100 to get the two replacement parts.
Was a big fan of HP until now.

Hewlett Packard cs rep admits to me the laptop that burned me is Hewlett Packards fault. Admits The blank screen saying Operating System Not Found is also HP fault. Then says to me sorry but the Pavilion is obsolete and Hewlett Packard will do nothing to fix this serious fire hazard. Had I not unplugged it or left the house with it plugged in ... My dog.
I spent 3000.00 on two Pavilions the end of 2008 and this is how they treat customers? I don’t care if I only spent 20.00. A fire hazard is a fire hazard PERIOD. The other Pavillion is warm and won’t use it. When I burned my hand on the first Hewlett Packard I unplugged the other one. I experienced first hand how dangerous these laptops are.
People if you own a HP laptop, unplug it. Especially if you have children or pets.
I told the cs rep I’m going to the BBB and states atty with this fire hazard! All he could say was sorry Hewlett Packard can’t help you that I’m on my own!

Sliced open my thumb on sharp corner edge of touchpad.
Reported to me by computer repair tech is that this touchpad is not secured in place by anything but some double sided tape. Being that we have been having hot humid weather, it is no wonder it let go.
Result was very unpleasant.

The product, in the report: Laptop computer
My HP Pavillion DV4-1275mx laptop computer started smoking and a bright red glow emerged from the area of the left display hinge. It appeared to be on fire in that area. The power was quickly disconnected and the battery pulled and the glow and smoke subsided. The cause has been traced to an abrasion of the screen flex cable by the screen hinge pivot pin, causing an electrical short and incipient burning of the cable insulation and a small portion of the plastic housing around the hinge structure. The machine is less than 3 years old. I was riding in the back of a car at the time and had the driver pull off the road until I was sure the smoke and fire hazard was stopped.

The hp laptop has not performed well since the day it was purchased it ran slow, generated a lot of heat and high temperatures and cause mild burns on my son’s lap. It turned off and on until recently the screen went completely black. My technician explained the reason video was not showing was heat related (fried motherboard) video chip had overheated. It is due to a defect of the motherboard from the manufactures. I reported this problem to HP many times, sent various emails and a certified letter the HP CEO [REDACTED] never receiveda reply from them til this date.
HP sold these faulty computers DV6000 and DV9000 series to consumers with these known problems. HP misrepresented and concealed material facts regarding these computers. They have caused injuries to customers due to this defect. The defect of the motherboard ultimately causes the laptops to fail In addition the defect has caused laptops to catch fire.

I have made several attements to contact them and get the problem resolved, but I can not get anyone to help me. It has now been nearly 4 months without a response from HP.

The product, in the report: Laptop
Caller has been using her laptop since purchase around December 2009 with no problems the week of November 6th through the 12th when it began overheating, not warm but hot with a chirping sound. Overheating around the cord, charging box etc.
Thursday, November 17th, 2011 it began chirping whether on or off when plugged in, however caller has not left it plugged in long enough to find out if it is still overheating.
Caller said she doesn’t believe that she should have to pay for replacement when the laptop is not an old one and she believes this to be manufacturer error in some way.
She would like to request repair/replacement of parts at manufacturer expense.

I have an HP laptop that I have had problems with since I purchase it. I have called in numerous times about the battery being severely hot and burning my leg but they say it’s not part of the recall and refuse to do anything about it. It gets really hot to where I won’t even hardly use my laptop anymore unless it’s extremely necessary!! Can you please do something to start a recall on the other batteries affected?

The product, in the report: Hewlett Packard Compaq nx7300 computer (serial number CNU7041B84, product number RM132UT#ABA)
Recently my Hewlett Packard Compaq nx7300 computer (serial number CNU7041B84, product number RM132UT#ABA) was closed and setting on a wooden desk. It was plugged into its Hewlett Packard charger, which was plugged into the wall outlet.
As my husband and I were preparing to leave the house, my husband began smelling something burning. At first we thought the smell was coming from the ceiling fan and then realized that smoke was coming from the back of the computer. I went to the desk and immediately unplugged the computer charger from the wall outlet and lifted the computer off the desk. Smoke continued to come out of the back of the computer where the charger was plugged in. I then pulled the charger cord out of the computer. After a few seconds the smoke stopped coming out of the computer. The end of the charger cord was melted and the top of the desk was scorched.
I have contacted HP, but they don’t seem concerned about the incident. They have only told me that the computer is out of warranty and that I should take it to a licensed HP repair service if I want it fixed.
If my husband hadn’t wandered into the room where the computer was located before we left our home, I am sure this incident would have resulted in a terrible fire.

The product, in the report: HP Pavilion Entertainment PC
Consumer stated that her battery of her laptop overheats. The consumer stated her son’s right arm was nearly burned and he had to shut down the computer. The laptop was on a wooden table for about 10 minutes while the A/C adapter was plugged in. The consumer is not sure if the computer overheats with the adapter plugged in. There have been no problems with the computer prior but the computer was serviced for a tune up 3 months ago.
The computer with the battery seems to overheat not the adapter cord. The computer seems to show no signs of damage. The consumer’s son did not experience any signs of electric shock. The computer is still usable. The consumer has yet to call the manufacturer or the retailer about the issue and has not sent it in for service to address this issue. The laptop is 4 years old. The computer did not cause damage to the table it was on. The consumer has noticed similar recalls for HP batteries put has concluded that her battery is not listed as under recalls.

I received this computer for Christmas in 2008. Ever since I have had it the bottom gets so hot it will literally burn your leg if you are not wearing pants. It gets so hot you cannot touch it, and you have to shut it down to cool off after about an hour. Also about every year you have to replace the power supply. I thought this was just my computer, but my brother’s and sister’s are the same way.

The product, in the report: HP Laptop
Caller works from home, was sitting with computer in her lap with a silk dress on. She kept moving the laptop around because it felt as if it was getting hot. When she stopped working after a few times the dress stayed with it then she noticed that her dress was burned and her leg was red. The second incident the computer was sitting on her desk, she left to prepare lunch, kept smelling something, couldn’t find it so went back to work at her computer. She noticed the smell more strongly when she went to her computer so she lifted it and saw that her desk had become so hot under it that the wood was bubbled. The computer battery was not in it when the caller’s dress and leg became burned, it was in it when the desk became burned. Caller is stating/reporting that the burning, overheating with the laptop computers is not the batteries but is in fact the computer itself.
