No one hurt Made Oct 8, 2026, sent to the company Oct 14, 2026, published by CPSC Oct 28, 2026
The product, in the report: Dell Precision 5760 mobile workstation laptop computer. This is a 17-inch professional-grade laptop with a silver aluminum exterior, black keyboard, built-in display, and internal rechargeable lithium-ion battery. The computer is designed for professional and personal computing, including business applications and technical work. The laptop experienced a fire originating in the battery area while disconnected from external power. The fire reignited after initially being extinguished, resulting in burned bedding and smoke inhalation. The battery remains installed, and the laptop has been preserved in its fire-damaged condition.
I am reporting a serious fire and product safety incident involving my Dell Precision 5760 laptop computer.
On approximately July 2026, my Dell Precision 5760 unexpectedly caught fire while it was not connected to a charger or external power source. The fire appeared to originate from the battery area of the laptop.
Actual flames were coming from the computer. I attempted to extinguish the fire by blowing out the flames. After the initial flames were extinguished, the laptop reignited, requiring me to extinguish the fire a second time.
The laptop was on my bedding when the incident occurred. The flames burned a hole in the bedding, resulting in property damage. I was also exposed to and inhaled smoke and fumes while repeatedly attempting to extinguish the flames.
The incident presented a serious risk of personal injury and a larger residential fire. Fortunately, the resulting property damage was limited, but the circumstances could have resulted in significantly more serious consequences.
The laptop was not charging when the fire occurred. The battery remains installed in the computer. I have preserved the laptop, battery, charger, damaged bedding, and photographs documenting the incident.
I reported the incident to Dell Technologies. Dell referred the matter to its Safety Capture Team under Case No. [REDACTED]. Dell subsequently informed me that its Safety Capture Team had completed its review and determined that no further safety investigation was necessary.
Dell acknowledged in writing that determining the cause of a lithium-ion battery fire generally requires a detailed technical evaluation of the affected components. However, to my knowledge, Dell has not physically inspected the laptop or battery. Despite the reported flames, reignition, smoke exposure, and property damage, Dell has repeatedly directed me to its standard out-of-warranty diagnostic and repair process at my expense.
I am concerned that a laptop battery or associated electrical component may have experienced a serious safety failure. I do not know the exact cause of the fire and am requesting an independent product safety review.
I am submitting this report to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission to document the incident, the potential fire and injury hazard, and my concerns regarding the possibility of similar incidents involving other Dell Precision 5760 computers.
I am willing to provide photographs, Dell correspondence, and the affected laptop for an appropriate safety investigation.

No one hurt Made Jun 10, 2026, sent to the company Jun 12, 2026, published by CPSC Jun 30, 2026
The product, in the report: A 16-inch performance laptop computer featuring a dark gray/silver aluminum chassis and a black keyboard. The device was used primarily for personal and academic engineering work.
While using a laptop computer under standard, normal operating conditions on a desk, the device suffered a sudden and catastrophic internal electrical short circuit.
The hardware failure immediately caused visible electrical arcing (sparks) and vented a significant amount of thick, chemical smoke directly into an enclosed residential living space. An adult consumer was actively operating the machine when the combustion event occurred.
No physical injuries occurred, but the incident created an immediate risk of indoor toxic smoke inhalation and a potential fire hazard. To mitigate any further thermal runaway or battery hazards, the chassis was subsequently opened to inspect the internal components for stability and to safely extract the solid-state storage drive. Upon opening the casing, there is no massive or obvious external scorching visible to the naked eye, meaning the critical electrical breakdown occurred at the component level or within the internal layers of the mainboard assembly. The device remains completely non-functional.
The manufacturer (Dell Technologies) was formally notified of this fire and smoke safety hazard under Internal Case Number [REDACTED](Service Tag: [REDACTED]). The manufacturer explicitly refused to perform a complimentary forensic safety evaluation of the failed hardware, electing instead to treat a physical residential fire and smoke hazard as a standard, out-of-warranty, fee-based commercial repair transaction.
The chassis is being held in a secure, isolated state to await regulatory inspection.

No incident, no one hurt Made May 21, 2026, sent to the company Jun 24, 2026, published by CPSC Jul 10, 2026
The product, in the report: Gray Dell XPS 15 7590 Laptop
I purchased a Dell laptop in 2019 and experienced an issue shortly after purchase where the computer would unexpectedly power on or fail to remain asleep while stored inside a backpack or carrying case. On multiple occasions, the laptop became extremely hot while enclosed and unattended, causing concern about overheating and potential lithium battery fire risk, but luckily I caught it being on in time each time to where it didn’t heat up to a point where it became a threat.
At the time, I did not pursue the issue because I rarely traveled with the laptop. Recently, after traveling more frequently with the device, the same problem reoccurred. The laptop appears to wake from sleep mode or otherwise activate unexpectedly while packed away, generating significant heat in an enclosed environment with limited ventilation.
This presents a potential fire and burn hazard, particularly during airline travel or while the laptop is stored in luggage, backpacks, or other confined spaces. The issue appears related to unintended wake/sleep behavior and overheating during transport.
I am submitting this report because I believe the condition may pose a consumer safety risk and may affect other users of similar Dell laptop models.
The risk of harm is that the laptop randomly turns on while being transported in a backpack or enclosed container. I’ve taken it out where it was burning hot and feels like it could cause a fire in an airplane or while transporting in other ways.

The product, in the report: Dell Laptop / Model: Precision 5540 / Service Tag: 6F06Q73 / Express Service Code 13968000543 15-inch aluminum laptop workstation, silver color. Came with Dell-branded charger.
I was using a Dell Precision 5540 laptop when it suddenly emitted a small flame from the air vent. I immediately unplugged it, and the flame went out on its own. The laptop still powers on, but the battery is stuck at 1% and will not charge since the incident. There was a burning smell afterward, and the computer is very hot to the touch when powered on for more than five minutes.
No one was injured, but it could have caused a fire. I contacted Dell support, but they said they could not help because the laptop is out of warranty. I am reporting this because I believe it is a potential fire hazard.

Hurt, care not known Made Aug 10, 2023, sent to the company Aug 14, 2023, published by CPSC Aug 28, 2023
The product, in the report: Dell XPS 15 9510 laptop purchased approx q1 2021 silver 16gb ram, upgraded immediately to 64
Dell XPS 15 laptop approx 3yrs ago. installed 64gb of ram in it immediately. Worked fine for 2 yrs, then started running hot, increasingly so such that it. Called in technician under warranty about 3 months ago. He clean out vents in laptop and replaced motherboard, but unbeknownst to me he took the old motherboard with extra memory and left me with the factory 16gb of memory. Subsequently it started running hot again after a month. This has become so bad the laptop would become too hot to touch and external thermal shutdowns, crashing and losing work. It has burn BOTH of the tops of my thighs, if I forgot to put a book or something underneath to protect myself. I have realized now that these burn marks are not going away and appear to be permanent. I am concerned that myself or others might end up encountering a fire if the laptop fails to shutdown. Ultimately it is my belief that the cooling system is inadequately designed, clogs up over time, or when the memory is insufficient (the case w the factory configuration). Dell has taken 2 weeks to respond to my request for replacement of memory and repair and has so far not agreed to perform either. I require this laptop for work and do not have the ability to use another device so I am stuck with the current situation.

No one hurt Made Apr 26, 2023, sent to the company May 1, 2023, published by CPSC May 15, 2023
The product, in the report: Dell laptop model XPS 15 7590. The laptop has a silver metallic metal case, a rubber keyboard, and a 15” screen size. I am uploading a technician’s report from a 3rd party vendor, but be advised that the report is not conclusive for unresolved issues such as overheating. The 3rd party vendor did change thermal paste, and though it dropped the idle, and load temperatures by 15c, it didn’t fix all of the thermal problems since the fan doesn’t come on at the appropriate time. The product was purchased directly from the Dell Outlet store. Typically these are open boxes, or laptops returned by other consumers. So in this case, Dell merely repackaged a laptop that they knew was defective, and chose to resell it anyway. Dell will not take the product back, refused to honor their warranty so $1709 dollars later I am stuck with a piece of worthless junk.
I purchased a Dell XPS 15 7590, and the laptop gets hot enough to cause a fire. It will literally melted the plastic off of my table. I have reported the problem to Dell, but Dell refuses to due anything about. The thermal problems associated with this laptop are widely publicized on the internet.
Research suggest many problems contribute to the thermal problems, including lack of a bios update that would make the fan speed adjustable, defective thermal paste from the factory, defective thermal pads and shielding in the voltage regulator module (vrm), no engineering to address serious over heating under load. Problem is ongoing. I had both a warranty, and extended warranty protection, and Dell refused to honor it, refused to repair the laptop, etc. Most recent communication from them over the issue was today, April 26, 2023, but communications have been going on at least since July of 2021.

What happened that made you want to report? Dell XPS 15 9570 laptop touchpad popping up physically, did not function correctly. Contacted Dell tech support and tech stated cause is more than likely due to lithium-ion battery swelling. In this swollen state the battery can rupture causing a fire. There are numerous reports found on the internet of fires caused by this and similar model laptop battery swelling issues. There are reports on the saferproducts site with similar details. [REDACTED][REDACTED][REDACTED] I disassembled the laptop and removed the battery. It is swollen, photo attached to this report. Once battery was removed, touchpad returned to correct physical position and was functioning correctly. Photos attached to this report. Laptop operating on AC power pak only. No battery. What type of product(s) were being used? Dell Laptop XPS 15 9570. Purchased brand new online from Dell in Dec 2018. Who was using the product(s)? I was using the laptop and experienced issues with the touchpad. It was not responding correctly to touch. Also it was popping out of its physical space, rising above keyboard. How were the product(s) being used? Using laptop to run applications needed for work. Also traveling for business carrying laptop onboard airplanes and various modes of transportation. Were there any injuries that happened or may have happened while using the product? No injuries incurred as I removed the swollen battery after contacting Dell tech support and being informed the touchpad issues was more than likely a swollen battery. In this swollen state the battery can rupture causing a fire. There are numerous reports found on the internet of fires caused by this and similar model laptop battery swelling issues. If battery started on fire during the night the results could have included death of household members due to house fire. A fire in the overhead luggage bin of an airplane would be catastrophic. Fire in hotel room could have led to many injuries and deaths. Dell issued a recall on previous models with similar issues. No record of recall for this particular XPS 15 9570 model. Dell wants to charge me $83.66 for a replacement battery. I requested replacement battery at no charge. I had purchased extended 4 year warranty on laptop that doesn’t expire until Dec 2022. However the battery is covered for only 3 years. How did any injuries occur? No injuries occurred. Swollen battery removed and stored in metal container with lid. using Laptop running on AC power pack.

The product, in the report: Dell XPS 13 (9380) laptop PC. Model XPS 13 (9380)
In May 2019, I purchased a Dell XPS 13 (9380) laptop PC for home use. This laptop has been exclusively used in a home office, never travelled, and has never been dropped or otherwise damaged. In November 2021, the keyboard and trackpad began to raise up noticeably (so that laptop top will not close properly) ... likely due to battery swelling after only 2 years ownership. There are many reports on this issue on various Internet forums including eventual explosion and fire.

My Dell XPS 13 9350 laptop battery began swelling. A Dell representative told me via web chat 2/6/2021 that this was a “fire hazard.” This battery is a replacement I bought from Dell in 2019 to replace the original factory-installed battery, which also swelled.

On Dec. 8th, 2019 my Dell XPS 15 laptop exploded, damaging my dining room table. The computer was on the table, charging. No one was in the house at the time (my husband was in the front yard). We noticed a strong electrical smell when we entered the house and discovered the computer had exploded. I had not any issues with the computer prior to this. I have since discovered that Dell has had other instances with the XPS 15 battery. (https://[REDACTED]) I am concerned that a recall has not been issued for this laptop. Had the computer been on a soft surface I’m sure there would have been a large fire, given the damage that my table suffered. I have not yet returned the computer to Dell - they were extremely slow in responding and I only heard from them last week.

The product, in the report: Laptop computer
I purchased two laptop computers from Dell in June of 2017. The first had the internal electrical components catch fire inside the laptop in October 2018. I took it to a repair shop who showed me that the ribbon cable was sparking and every time you open or closed the laptop. I assumed it was an isolated incident and moved on. However, just recently, the second laptop now has just had a similar issue as the motherboard has areas that are burnt where it connects to the power connector. I’ve tried to report the issue to Dell but have been unsuccessful (called three different times only to be disconnected each after speaking to multiple departments, emailed, spoken with their dell cares account, and tried chat). None of them have resulted in dell taking any report of the defect nor any resolution. I’m concerned that it is likely some sort of defect that has caused such similar issues in two identical laptops purchased at the same time.

On Wednesday, May 15, a Dell XPS 15 9560 laptop caused a fire in a University building. The fire inspector determined that the fire started with the laptop, near the battery. This model was covered by Dells extended warranty battery program, but the owner did not know about the program and did not know that this laptop may be susceptible to battery swelling.
The fire destroyed the laptop, desk, walls, cabinets and monitors. This fire has been reported to Dell but I though you should know as well.

The product, in the report: DELL LAPTOP MODEL TYPE INSPIRON 17 7000 2-IN-1
I have a Dell computer laptop, model type lnspiron 15 7000 2-in-1, with an external power supply converting 120volts to a lower voltage. The power supply has 2 power and 1 ground pins.
One day in August 2018, I received a nasty shock from the pc while using it in normal conditions.
I removed the plug from the laptop and measured the voltage on the external pin and found it to be about 50 volts ac.
I discovered that the Ground connection between the wall outlet and my extension cord was broken.
THIS MEANS THAT IF THE GROUND PIN OF A RECEPTACLE IS BROKEN, A SERIOUS HAZARD EXISTS.
This information was reported to Dell, but the best they offered me is another power supply unit, which seems to have the same issue-based on my measurements.

My company ([REDACTED]) ordered a batch of 30 Dell Latitude 7390 notebook computers in the April 2018, of that thirty 18 have burned up catastrophically. Upon contacting the manufacturers they are replacing the faulty system board with the same system boards and its just burns up again within a few days to a month. Not only is the manufacturer not offering a refund or exchange they are not acknowledging the issue and the potential of personal injury and/or property damage. There seems to be a group of 4 electrical components on the system board that get so hot that its hot enough to burn the plastic on this notebook computer. Luckily no one has been injured or no property has been lost because of this but if this happened on a plane this could be a deadly issue if something were to catch fire. Dell claims to have fixed the issue with a bios update as it was some bad code that was written and it was giving a false temperature reading but we have had two failures since then and now have decided to pull the notebook computer from our fleet. The incident dates we have had multiple instances from 5/20/2018 -7/29/2018.

With less than one year of use the high capacity lithium-ion battery has physically swelled a considerable amount. My concern is with the fire hazard around defective Li-Ion batteries.

The product, in the report: Dell Inspiron 600 Desktop
I purchased a Dell Inspiron 600 series in November of this year (2012) and when I turned it on my throat, and sinuses started burning, and I started coughing. My husband also reported having burning eyes when in the same room where the computer is running. I have tried to let it run in a room with a fan on and with ventilation from an open door for over 4 days and the fumes have not subsided. I contacted Costco, where I purchased the computer and also Dell. I was sent a new computer last week but I have experienced the same thing with the new one. I will be sending both computers back. I know that electronics can have a strong odor when they are new but this is different. There is nothing visible in the air nor is there an actual odor. There is just choking fumes. The computer that I currently own, is also a Dell. I have had for over 6 years and I haven’t had any problems with fumes or off gassing.

The product, in the report: Dell Latitude 1525 Service Tag: 1S5DQ91
Late last night, my son came running into my den screaming. went into his room and his dell laptop (service tag 1s5dq91) was ablaze on his desk. We unplugged the charger, put out as much of the blaze as possible. I took the laptop outside, still on fire. Parts of the battery fell out while I was carrying it and started sending sparks everywhere. If this would’ve happened while we were at home, the house would’ve been burned down. Looking on the web, we saw that Dell issued a recall, we never received one. We are the original owners of the machine.

The product, in the report: Laptop Computer
The consumer says when trying to turn it on. She says the unit gets blackened at the bottom left corner. She touched it and noticed the screen was very hot and burned her fingers.
She contacted the manufacturer three weeks ago who told her the unit is not on recall and its too old. The consumer says it is only four years old.
She says there is no reason for it to happen. No spillage or mishandling of the product. A technician friend of hers took it apart and said it is the screen causing the problem. He turned it back on and the unit started getting hot again.

The product, in the report: Dell XPS 17 lap top computer
I received electrical shock from newly purchased Dell XPS 17 laptop computer, order number 885737523, Service Tag (SN) 4Q3V3S1. Computer was plugged into its AC power supply and sitting on my lap. As I was working on the computer, I received an electrical shock at the point where my right upper thigh was in contact with the bottom of the laptop computer. The shock was brief but definitely longer than a typical household static discharge. The shock lasted long enough for my thigh muscle at the point of contact to briefly contract like the electrical muscle stimulation devices used by physical therapists. The shock lasted at least a full second and stopped when I reacted to the pain and moved the laptop computer. I was sitting in a chair and not in contact with any other electrical devices, furniture or grounded in any way.

The product, in the report: Dell Inspiron 1545 Intel Celeron Laptop
I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 that I purchased in October 2009 which included a one year warranty. Last year before the warranty expired the power adapter to the laptop stop charging the battery. It would promt a message say “plugged in, not charging”.
Today that happened once again but this time what make it much more alarming is both the charger and the laptop are extrememly hot. I am afraid that the laptop could catch on fire.
