The product, in the report: HP Compaq Laptop computer, Presario CQ60-206US / 17 inch monitor.
The Presario CQ60 shuts off by itself after a few minutes of operating. I had to restart it, but then it did it again. If I put it on a laptop fan then it still turns off but it lasts longer. I’m guessing the fan was not working properly. Also, the screen monitor sizzled and caught on fire. It was just a little fire, but it was startling. It appears that the wires behind the screen caught on fire.

The product, in the report: Compaq Presario CQ60-220US
Last night, my laptop all the sudden caught on fire. I believe the fire started from the battery of the laptop. I think it overheated, but luckly I did not go to sleep yet. I used a three cups of water to douse the fire off. Otherwise, it would have been a different story.

5 year old Compaq computer. charger cord started to smoke at connection with computer. melted the rubber covering the cord into a big blob.I called HP thinking it was part of the current recall. told it was not. Asked if they considered this a safety concern, didn’t seem too concerned. The power cord had the same identifying number on it and they said it wasn’t part of the recall .

No one hurt Made Oct 12, 2012, sent to the company Oct 22, 2012, published by CPSC Nov 5, 2012
The product, in the report: HP Compaq 8510w.
This incident occurred near the end of August or beginning of September 2010. My laptop was plugged in and charging on an end table - nothing else on it was on the table and the laptop was off. I was at a friend’s house and fell asleep on her couch after working on some items on my agenda. At some point, the unit malfunctioned and caught on fire. I was the only one in the room, there were no pets, no liquids, etc. around the laptop or the table and there was no sign of external catalysts as being the sign of the cause. Thankfully, my friend and her roommate heading out to grab a bite when they noticed the flames coming from my laptop. They yelled waking me up - and me walking up to flames less than two feet from my body. Thankfully there was no injury, but the likelihood of injury was great had I not been awoken. Again, there were no external causes for the fire; the unit was plugged into a surge protector, free of any likely causes of danger, and it was still under the 3 year warranty afforded to business class notebooks. Prior to the incident, the unit had malfunctioned (stopped turning on if I recall correctly) and an on site repair was scheduled for the next day (the day following this incident). Obviously the repair was unable to occur and ever since this, there has yet to be a resolution to this issue. Subsequent to this, HP failed to take timely measures to rectify the problem and failed to even assess the situation. No attempt was made to retrieve the unit and no direction was given when requested regarding the unit by HP.

The product, in the report: HP Compaq Presario CQ61 Notebook
Ever since we purchased this Laptop it ALWAYS overheats, burning our young daughters legs as well as mine. It gets so hot that we cant leave it on or plugged in unless we are using it (it gets so hot that we are afraid it will catch something on fire). Contacted Corporate,Consumer Affairs,Cusomer Relations,Tech Support...Yet they keep telling me its normal. How is this Normal to burn a young child? It gets the whole computer hot that it fried something operating the screen and turned it black and got so hot that it zapped a usb plugged in from surgering from the heat. Extended 2 year warranty from Staples IS A JOKE also. Will not cover this. And HP dont care if their customers are unsafe as long as they are making money is their goal. DO NOT PURCHASE HP COMPAQ PRESARIO CQ61’s as they will burn you and possibly cause a fire.

The product, in the report: Compaq Presario V5000 Laptop Computer
I bought my Compaq Presario V5000 in 2007. Since the day that I bought it the battery gets VERY hot with prolonged use. I never leave it on too long because I am worried about how hot it gets. The other day my daughter was using it and has apparently been on it too long. I picked the computer up to move it and when I grabbed it the battery was so hot that it burned my hand. I did some research and saw that there was a recall on HP batteries but this model was not included. I am concerned that it was not on the reacall list as it too does get to an extremely high temperature.

i bought product on 3/18/2010 it quit working after aprox 6 months i took it to a shop and accessed their online support they had the shop remove back. he informed me that this product was refurbished or altered as the factory seals were already broke. we ended up having to send it in at the expense of hp. they said they fixed it and sent it back. a couple weeks after the charger quit i called them and they sent a new one i started noticing dark marks on my legs and realized that the heat comimg from the unit was cooking my legs. i tryed to contact them but my warrenty expired and they said they wanted to charge me for extended service plan. my battery was not covered under their battery replacement program. but my computer is getting to hot to touch. i had soars on my legs from the burns. they have had no solutions for this and the message boards have several people with the same complaints. it gets hot enough to discolor paper sitting under it. and since the charger started getting just as hot. i am afraid to use it for fear of battery exploding or cumbustion. the heat does not stop when battery is not present

The product, in the report: Laptop computer
This is the letter I sent to HP. It should provide all necessary information:
This is a known problem with this computer and should have been acknowledged by HP warranty expired or not. I am contacting U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission trying to get a safety recall. I have a Compact Presario CQ50-105NR 2CE8259HLJ Product FE872UA#ABA Warrenty Start 8-31-2008 service ID 18241 When I purchased computer it was always too hot to sit on my lap, resulting in redness to skin underneath clothing etc. It was my first laptop and I was told they do get “warm”. It worked fine so I was not concerned. I never again allowed it to be in contact with a surface. Now, summer of 2011 it is so hot after running a short time ,elevated off surface of table, it freezes up. It is too hot to touch underside of laptop. I have to shut it down and let it cool for approx 1 hour. This laptop gets so hot I will not leave it plugged in if I am not using. Upon researching this issue I’ve found online message boards bombarded with this known problem. What can you offer to make this right ? email [REDACTED] Yours truly, [REDACTED]

We have two laptops. One is a presario that we have had for over 7 years and have NEVER had any problems with. The other, the one I would like to make you aware of, we purchased not even two years ago. The battery gets so hot, that if you set the laptop on your legs, you get burned if you don’t remove it right away. It’s the equivalent of touching your finger on a pot that has boiling water in it.
