The product, in the report: AmazonBasics USB-C charging cable 3 ft
Hello,
I had a scary experience and start of an electrical fire yesterday morning. I contacted Amazon about their branded cable product but received a response about the product warranty and $10 credit.
My amazonbasics cable almost lit my house on fire yesterday, 1/10/21. The cable was bought September 2019 and has been used infrequently. My other [REDACTED] cable died so I used the AmazonBasics cable this morning. When I plugged the cable in it wasn’t charging my phone. I went to grab the cable I use in my car and but had not unplugged the AnazonBasics cable before I left. When I came back a few moments later there were sparks and the cable end plastic around the charging end that connects to the device was bulging like a balloon. When the plastic cooled it shrunk back down but you can still see heat damage. I could smell smoke but it had not lit on fire yet, just a few sparks from the end. I unplugged and have the cable set aside.
This is dangerous. I’ve never had another brand of cable spark, smoke, or heat up.
Thanks.

The product, in the report: Amazon FireStick TV, purchased from Amazon.com in October 2014. It is an HDMI “dongle” device to stream media to a television with content from Amazon sources and other subscriptions.
I’d recently moved my Amazon FireStick from behind the television into a more accessible location inside of an entertainment system/cabinet along with other devices. I have been moving/rearranging items in my home, and thus had been having a lot of contact and interaction with the device, and previously (well over a year) never physically touched it since it was behind my television plugged into an HDMI port. I noticed the item was getting very hot, to the point of unbearable to the touch. I was troubleshooting possible problems and reasons, and due to it being in a more enclosed environment I created open air ventilation for it, along with cooling fans to blow over the surface of the product. I spent some time testing it in small amounts of time to see if it was still getting hot, and during one of the tests, I left the item plugged in for around ten minutes (which is normal...it is even recommended that this item be plugged in 24/7) and when I observed the item again, it had physically started melting. The plastic casing on the item was melting and disfigured on the top and bottom of the product. I immediately killed the power to the item and used protective gear to remove it before causing external damage to my furniture or any other products nearby. Thankfully I had been monitoring and testing this item, as the damages caused by this could have been catastrophic to my home, and could have caused severe burns if handled. I’ve spent days searching, and cannot find information of anyone else having this happen, but there does seem to be a very well-known issue with this item overheating.

The product, in the report: 7” Kindle Fire Tablet
The consumer indicates that, on average, his daughter would use her tablet for approximately four hours daily some days 1-2 hours or even less then 1 hour. After about a week of usage, the consumer and his wife noticed that their daughter’s hands and fingers had started scalding and eventually noticed she would peel pieces off of her skin. They noticed that it was due to her using her tablet. Since the consumers took the tablet away, there is no more irritation to her hand-skin.
01/03/2016 (Approximately) - The consumer took his daughter to her Pediatrician, who informed the consumer that the state of his daughter’s hands and fingers was definitely due to repeated chemical burns. Definition: chemical burns= strong! chemical skin irritation The Doctor prescribed a cream to be used for the following ten days to help with the healing process. The consumer indicates that he will ask for a referral to a Dermatologist.
The consumer indicates that his daughter’s hands are very wrinkled now and have many small cuts. Subsequent to January 14, 2016 and up to the date of consumer’s signature (February 19) the hands are staying wrinkled and hurting slight cuts.
The consumer does not know if he will return his tablet as he is considering purchasing a cover for it though he will not give it back to his daughter to use. He will contact the manufacturer and proceed from there. The device was not used since then (also not touched, the surfaces)
Possible Kindle investigation. Kindle is left/not touched after the incident.

The product, in the report: Amazon Kindle Fire (eBook reader and tablet)
My Amazon Kindle experienced a battery defect, which destroyed the entire product. The battery expanded from its normal size to over 1/2 inch in thickness, pushing the components of the Kindle apart and breaking the product. It no longer works. The screen has been broken open and the back case has snapped off. The Kindle was not exposed to any severe environmental factors, heat, cold or other. The expansion happened during an extended period of non-use, and there was no injury. After researching online, this appears to be a common problem, known to Amazon.

No one hurt Made Aug 21, 2013, sent to the company Aug 29, 2013, published by CPSC Sep 13, 2013
The product, in the report: Kindle Fire
My Kindle Fire started getting really hot when in use, even if only for a couple minutes, then it split on the right hand side on July 24, 2013. I contacted Amazon that day to report the problem, and they admitted that this was a known issue with the Kindle Fire. They then offered to let me buy another Kindle fire for $149, they said I was outside of my 1 year warranty period. I tried to argue with them that if it is a known issue then shouldn’t they replace it at their cost, since it was obviously a problem with the Kindle Fire. They refused, stating I could only upgrade at my cost. I told them no, that I did not want to do that. Today, the KIndle Fire seemed to expand even more, as if something inside it burst. It still works but is hot to the touch and does not hold a charge for very long and i have not been able to read on it, because I am concerned about the heat. This could be a potential hazard, especially a fire hazard. I think that Amazon should step up and replace this KIndle Fire, especially if they know it has this problem. I feel as if they were trying to take advantage of me, knowing that my only option was to purchase another Kindle, as they were uncooperative.

The product, in the report: This is an adapter for a microSD memory card. The adapter allows the microSD memory card to be used in a regular SD memory card slot. Part number: B0058GH4U0
I purchased a microSD memory card, and a SD memory card adapter, from Amazon.com. The brand for both was Amazon Basics. On May 2, I used the adapter for the first time. I inserted a microSD card into the adapter, and placed the adapter into my [REDACTED] computer. Within a few seconds I smelled burning plastic. I removed the adapter. In so doing I sustained a second-degree burn to the tip of my thumb, and a burn to the tip of my forefinger. The heat was so intense that at first I thought I had received an electric shock. The adapter had melted around the memory card. The melting was most intense where the metal contacts of the memory card touched the internal metal contacts of the memory card adapter.
I [REDACTED] “melting sd card adapter” on the internet, and found several other reports of melting SD card adapters, not limited to Amazon Basics brand.

The product, in the report: Amazon Kindle Gen2 Electronic Book Reader
The power cord to my Amazon Kindle has been sitting in my drawer in normal conditions (i.e. room temperature). I went to pick it up after not having used it for 3 months, and the plastic coating has started to chip off, exposing the wires under neath. When I moved the cord around just a little, little bits of plastic from all up and down the cord started chipping off, and almost the entire wire under was exposed, creating a fire hazard.
I read about this on Amazon’s discussion board, and this same thing has happened to 100s of people.

The product, in the report: Cord used to recharge Kindle battery
I have one of the earlier Kindles and recently unplugged the charging cored and discovered that the plastic around the wires had deteriorated. As I held the cord bits of plastic fell into my hand exposing more of the wire. I could have been executed if I had touched a deteriorated place as I unplugged the cord! I called Amazon who said this problem was rare and that they would send a new cord. Then I talked with my mother who also has an early Kindle and the same thing had happened to her cord, but she had originally thought that she or someone in her household had caused the cord to fray. This is a serious and potentially deadly problem that Amazon is not responding to. They should have recalled these cords long ago. They are being criminally negligent. [REDACTED]
