The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

  1. No one hurt

Made May 11, 2015, sent to the company May 19, 2015, published by CPSC Jun 10, 2015

The product, in the report: Summer infant slim and secure baby monitor. 2 camaras (1 in each childs room) monitor scans between the two.

This mother’s day started with a boom. Literally. Around 3 a.m. [REDACTED] and I woke up to a strange noise to discover our Summer Infant baby monitor had exploded and was on fire on our floor and a stack of papers on the desk (where it had been sitting) was also on fire. THANK GOD we heard it. I mean, it took us about 5 seconds to wrap our head around what was happening and act...fast. I ran to bathroom and got a towel wet and thru it on the fire. And just like that it was over. Could’ve been a different scenario. It fell right by our long curtain that covers our window/door, had that caught fire, im not sure WE would’ve been able to put it out. Smoke alarm went off as we were putting it out, so we definitely would have been alarmed had we NOT heard the little explosion. There was a recall on these monitors. I have 3 emails from babys r us dating back to 2011. Apparently I read them (I have no recollection) I must’ve checked ours and determined ours wasn’t one of the affected. I also have an email from them in 2014 that was unopened, guess I missed that one. So parents, check your monitors to make sure they are safe. Check your smoke alarms. Read all recalls. Our house will be getting a complete safety check.

Meanwhile our kids slept peacefully in their beds never knowing the danger that had just occurred. You truly never know when life is going to give you a jolt of reality. Accidents happen to everyone. Im beyond thankful that this story has a happy ending. Holding my precious babies a little closer today.

The product, in the report: Summers infant baby touch monitor.

The baby touch monitor by summers was used everyday without a problem since may 2014. Tonight as it was next to our bed and the battery of the monitor exploded bursting fire like a flamethrower from the back of it all the way to the wall ( about 2 feet and a half) burning everything around it ( a book, some bills and envelopes). If I would have waken up 10 seconds later it would’ve ended very differently, not to sound dramatic but I’m used to weld with a torch and the battery was spitting fire exactly the same way. Basically I got lucky that I woke up as soon as it started , it was next to me so I slapped it really hard and blew on it until it was low enough for me to go get a towel run it under the water and throw it on the night stand. We usually keeps in on the bed next to us, I can’t even imagine the state we would be in right now if she had not decided to plugged it and put in on the night stand tonight.

The product, in the report: Summer Infant Day and Night Video Baby Monitor # 02080

We used this baby monitor for about 6 months, all of which time the wall power adapter would get very hot. I then noticed the wall power adapter plug started to crack on the parent unit. Within 1-2 weeks it completely cracked open so that you could see the inside of the plug adapter. This could have caused not only a fire but God forbid one of my babies had touched it!

The product, in the report: White summer baby monitor. Chargeable #02804

We purchased the summer baby monitor in 2011. We had the monitor unplugged and running on the battery in the living to keep and eye on my son asleep. When he awoke from his nap I brought him out to living room with me. As he was sitting on my lap he reached for the monitor and grabbed it in his hands. Quickly dropping it and crying. I noticed his hand was red so I felt the monitor and it was extreme hot. I iced his hands to ease his discomfort and haven’t used the monitor sense. I was very upset and displeased and sorry my son was able to reach the monitor. His hand is ok it never left a mark or scare on him. But the fact that it burned him in the first place was very distressful.

We have had our Summer Baby Monitor (BestView Choice #28460) for about a year. One week ago we picked up the monitor in the middle of the night and it was extremely hot (normally not hot at all), it was so hot I got nervous having it in the house and took it outside until it cooled off. When we tried to turn the monitor back on the low battery light was red and then it shut off after 2 seconds. We tried to plug it into the AC charger and it still wouldn’t work. We ended up ordering a new charger from summerinfant.com waited a few days for that to come and when we got that charger, the monitor still wouldn’t hold a charge. We then went to the local battery store to test a new battery with the monitor and charger. We have come to the conclusion that the battery over heated so much that it may have fried some circuits in the monitor unit itself, as now the monitor wont hold a charge with any battery nor will it work when plugged into the AC charger.

The product, in the report: It is a summer video monitor with camera and hand held viewing monitor screen! With volume control, night vision, voice communication

My sister inlaw gave me her Summer video baby monitor she used for my niece when my son was born! I have been in able to use it because the unit was running hot for about a week....I just thought maybe it needed a break! I set it down and it I heard a loud pop and the screen was cracked and pieces were every where! I was thankful to only have a small piece in my finger and nothing worse. I taped it up and tried to use it again but it took two days before I could get it back on....and couldn’t figure out why it had a mini heat explosion! Thinking it better I have since turned it off and sadly can’t use it....for my safety and my families. So a grind that was there when all this happened saw this recall and sent me the info....and wouldn’t you know it is one of the first ones on the recall list!!! Yikes!!! Model number 02000

Do you need pictures what is the next step....never had an issue involving a recall!

Caller has two of the video monitor sets with batteries recalled on release# 14-156. She purchased the first one around mid April 2012 for her first child. She noticed from the first use that the monitor base became very warm. She purchased the second monitor, same model, same battery number sometime around November 2013 has noticed that the base of this second unit also becomes very warm to the point of not being able to keep your hand on the unit.

She has reported these monitors to alert the public that there may be a greater danger than the batteries if the monitor continues to heat.

There have no injuries to report The caller has not contacted the manufacturer and may not contact them

We have a Summer Infant Best View monitor that has caused us problems since day 1... it was purchased in January of 2011. The battery will not hold a charge so we have to keep it plugged in all the time. The monitor gets super hot and we are constantly unplugging it to let it cool down. I have two cameras attached to this monitor and can’t be with out. I have contacted Summer in the past about his but have never sent it back because I can’t be without for a week plus.

The product, in the report: Baby Monitor

Caller reported that her child’s nanny arrived home to find the house engulfed in smoke and called the fire department. The fire department arrived and confirmed that the baby monitor had caught fire. The house was evacuated and ventilated for 5 days and a company came in for cleaning. She stated she experienced similar problems of Release#11-126 with the monitor although her model was not included in the recall. The monitor was plugged in for approximately 3 hours before the incident occurred.

5/2013 The manufacturer was contacted through her insurance company, however, there was no response until September 2013 when they requested to have the evidence sent to them. Insurance company sent them the evidence 9/20/2013. The manufacturer did not contact the insurance company and the Insurance company contacted them 1/17/14 and spoke to a Manager who informed them that this case was not a priority and would try to look into it sometime in the Spring or Summer of 2014. The insurance requested that the evidence be sent back to them, however, they had not respond to this request.

Caller feels that this product is a fire hazard which caused estimated property damages of $6300.00 and should be reported.

The product, in the report: Summer Infant Slim and Secure handheld color video monitors (model #02800) - Type 3.7V Li-ion Battery

I have the video monitor by my bedside and it is normally plugged directly into the wall. I pushed the button to turn on the video, but it didn’t come on even though it was powered on. So I tried to turn it off and it didn’t do anything. I turned it over to remove the battery and then replace to reset it. When I turned it over, I noticed that the battery compartment door was bulging a little bit on one side. I pulled it off to find that the battery is bulged out on both sided of it and the battery and the unit were both very warm to the touch, almost hot. I took the battery out and did not put it back in.

Yesterday, I went to turn on our Summer Infant Slim and Secure handheld color video monitor (model #02800). I noticed that the back of the battery compartment was almost off of the back. When I went to re-secure it, I noticed that the battery appears to be bloated, which caused the back of the monitor to crack and the battery door to become unattached. I remembered that these monitors and their rechargeable batteries had been recalled in the past, but ours was not included in that recall b/c it was marked w/ “TLC.” I am glad we found this defective battery before it ruptured, which could have either causing me harm (b/c it rests on a table beside my head at night) or damaged the monitor itself. Thank you.

Our video baby monitor was plugged into a house electrical receptacle and was recharging. The battery in the handheld monitor spontaneously exploded and ignited nearly burning our house down. Fortunately we we were home and happened to be only a few feet away from it when it ignited. If we had not been home or if this had occurred at night, this would have easily burned our home down. I just learner today these units were recalled in Feb 2011 for this very issue, but I bought this unit from Babies R Us in May of 2011. Babies R Us failed to remove this unit from their shelves when it was recalled.

The unit is a Summer Slim and Secure Handheld color video monitor. I still have the unit and pictures of the immediate aftermath. I also still have the original packaging and receipt of purchase.

I just had another baby and we were getting the nursery together again. I went to get the Summer slim handheld monitor in pink-hooked up again and as I was getting the handheld out I noticed the back of the monitor had popped off and the battery was the cause. It had exploded or ruptured and caused the battery case to become dislodged. It happened without my knowledge and we didn’t notice until we needed it again. Then I found out that it was a battery that was recalled for the exact monitor that we purchased. I intend to call to get a replacement on Monday.

The product, in the report: Summer Infant day and night handheld color video monitor with large 2.5” color LCD screen

On the evening of February 26th, my family went to bed leaving one of our two baby monitors on downstairs, as usual. It was resting on the living room sofa. With 2 small children sleeping, I woke up to smoke and a burning smell, only to discover that our baby monitor (of all things) was about to catch fire (from the monitor itself, NOT the cord) AND an area of my couch was scorched. The name of the device is: Summer Infant Day and Night Handheld Color Video Monitor with 2.5” screen. As a mother, I’d like Summer Infant to make sure this is addressed so that this obvious potential danger will not cause harm as it nearly did to our home. I have unbelievable photos which I hope to include. Please feel free to contact me for further information.

The product, in the report: rechargeable baby monitor

The baby monitor was plugged into the wall outlet, but it was in the “off” position. The consumer said that they always leave the monitor plugged into the wall unless they are going to take it somewhere.

The consumer said the electric cord plug is what was damaged from this incident. The consumer said she noticed an electric noise from the baby monitor and it was crackling like something in a frying pan. The consumer checked the cord and attempted to remove it. The end of the electric cord with the metal prongs that plug into the wall outlet was almost fused to the wall outlet. The consumer was able to remove the plug from the wall, but that end of it was melted. The plug was damaged, but it did not trip the breaker. After the consumer removed the plug from the wall outlet, she went down stairs and tripped the circuit breaker.

The consumer noted that they had to get an electrician to come out and replace the wall outlet.

The consumer called the mfr’s and left them a voice message and asked for a return call within 24 hours, but she has not received it.

The consumer believes that this could have led to a fire if she did not noticed the problem when she did.

The product, in the report: Summer Infant Deluxe Day and Night Handheld Color Video Monitor with 2.5” Screen, Blue

My husband and I really enjoyed this monitor for the first few months that we had it. We even bought a second camera to put elsewhere in the house so that we could monitor his playtime.

However, on 09/01/11 at 2:00am, I woke to the sound of static coming from the monitor. My husband reached over and tried to turn the video feed on (the screen had gone black), but it wouldn’t come on. Just a black screen and static on the audio. He turned it off and back on, same result. Then he turned the device over and we could see a bright glow coming from the little vents on the back of the device, and could quickly smell the odor of burning electronics as the back inside of the device caught fire. We immediately jumped out of bed, unplugged the device from the wall and carried it outside by the antenna.

The device was plugged directly into a wall outlet, not into any crazy chain of surge protectors or anything else, and had never been wet, played with, handled by our child, pet, was not close to any moisture or heat, etc. or anything else out of the ordinary. It was simply sitting on our nightstand like every other night for the past 4+ months.

This device is apparently poorly manufactured and had we not woken up when it started to catch on fire, who knows what would have happened.

Woke up in the middle of the night from the smell of smoke and saw smoke coming from monitor charger cord. The smoke was specifically coming from the end plugged into the wall. The product was returned to Babies R Us and replaced at no charge.

Summer Infant Inc. - Day and Night Color Video Monitor - Model 210A White with silver cover plate Rechargeable Battery - McNair Ni-Cd AA1100mAh 4.8V

The monitor was purchased in 2008 and it’s first use was in September 2008. My wife and I came home today to find the monitor was left on while charging and the silver cover plate was melted due to heat buildup.

The rechargeable battery is in good condition. It appears the heat buildup came from behind the monitor.

In defense of the product the monitor was accidentally left on all day and under a pillow which did not help the heat buildup situation. However, the video monitor does not have a failsafe power off feature for the monitor when plugged in to the charger. The video monitor only shuts off automatically when battery powered. The fact that the video monitor does not have an automatic shutoff within a certain period of time seems to be an engineering flaw as we discovered today.

The product, in the report: Summer Color Video Baby Monitor, No. 210a, serial #0711601

We had purchased, well over a year ago, a Summer Video Baby monitor, No 2110, serial # 07111601. Several nights ago, we noticed a burning smell coming from the monitor, then it started smoking. We unplugged it and discontinued use that night. The next or two nights later, we again tried to use the monitor, this time with a different electrical outlet in a different room. The problem releated itself, the unit was very hot to the touch.
