Hurt, care not known Made Aug 7, 2018, sent to the company Aug 15, 2018, published by CPSC Aug 29, 2018
The product, in the report: The product is a OnePlus 5T model smartphone
Close to a year ago I purchased a OnePlus 5T cellular smartphone from the company OnePlus. Since owning this phone I started to notice randomly the phone getting very hot during charging and sometimes even during normal usage. However, since it comes with its own fast charging adapter and cord, I just chalked it up as normal. However, 4 days ago as this issue has been worsening randomly, I went to go get my phone after I had charged it, as I had been turning it off while charging to try to mitigate the issue, likewise I had not reported anything because it did not seem to affect the functioning of the phone. This is where things get scary, I went to go get my phone, and I looked down at it and seeing there was a white bluish hue Circle in the middle of the screen, I thought maybe something had got on the screen, I went to grab the phone and it was so hot, it would burn your finger to touch it, so I very quickly grabbed a sock off the floor which is the first thing I could find and unplugged it and took it downstairs in our basement and left it for a little while.
Upon returning, after calling a friend and telling him about it on my wife’s phone, he told me quote; “[REDACTED] be careful, I just read a story about those phones exploding!” I about freaked out, so I told him that I had had it for close to a year, and it seems like it’s gotten worse, and worse, when charging, and sometimes during normal use. He told me I should call customer service immediately.
I called customer support for OnePlus after sending them a tweet on [REDACTED], and the operator made me feel much better as she told me they have had no incidents of phones, getting hot and exploding, and said that she was going to send me an email and start a troubleshooting ticket on the issue, which needless to say made me feel much much better.
So today, I called my friend, who is [REDACTED] certified, and works in network Administration, who actually sent me the link of the story, where I saw the pictures of the exact model of my phone, clearly and separate pieces charred all in black, showing obviously where the phone had exploded similar to the pictures I had saw when [REDACTED] had their issues, needless to say I cannot begin to tell you how upset, and scared it made me, to find out they had clearly lied to me.
I do not know what to do at this point, as the company is headquartered in China, however someone told me that they also have a US headquarters, and then I should likewise contact the FCC and FTC, which I plan on doing, if there’s anything, or anyway you can help me it would be much appreciated as I naturally I’m concerned, to say the least
