No one hurt Made Oct 10, 2026, sent to the company Oct 15, 2026, published by CPSC Oct 29, 2026
The product, in the report: Motorola Moto G cell phone
Motorola Moto G 2026 phone purchased through TMobile had issues (screen glitching and phone locking up, requiring factory reset). After it started smelling terrible. Same odor as a phone I had which vented the battery. It literally stunk up the whole house and both myself and my dog became ill. I experienced significant headaches, dizziness and nausea. My dog started repeatedly vomiting. TMobile deferred to Motorola for support. After several calls, they sent a replacement. While I waited for the replacement, I kept the phone on the garage in a [REDACTED] bag. The replacement phone also smelled the same. I noticed the smell increased when apps ran which took a lot of processing power (watching videos or playing game apps) or when the phone updated the system software or charged the battery. Briefly I and my dog experienced the same illness until I put the phone in the garage and aired out the house. I had to engage Motorola again and notify them the new phone also had the same issue. Again, they sent me a replacement and again, the new phone has the same issue. It appears, the 2026 Moto G phone has a battery issue, like they are maybe leaking slightly?
I need to know what potential health issues this poses and if there are any long-term implications.
If 3 out of 3 of the phones I have acquired all have the same issue, this could potentially be a bigger safety issue with cell phones assembled by Motorola.

First aid Made Apr 29, 2026, sent to the company May 4, 2026, published by CPSC May 18, 2026
The product, in the report: Motorola G Play 2026 smartphone, model XT26153. Product description on the order is PIB MOT G PLAY26 XT26153 TAP. Black touchscreen cellular mobile phone intended for everyday personal use, including calling, texting, internet access, and mobile applications. Standard handheld smartphone size with rechargeable internal lithium battery and SIM card capability for wireless service. Purchased new through AT and T on April 21, 2026 under [REDACTED]. Return or exchange period listed through May 5, 2026.
I purchased a Motorola G Play 2026 model XT26153 phone from the AT and T store on April 21. Shortly after purchase, the device began experiencing serious operational problems, including repeatedly locking up, freezing, and becoming unusable during normal operation. Due to these ongoing defects, I returned to the AT and T store on April 24, where store employees replaced the SIM card and advised me to monitor the phone to see if the issue was resolved. When the same problems continued, I returned again on April 25 and was instructed to wait an additional 24 hours. The device continued to malfunction.
On April 27, I was demonstrating the recurring issue to my friend [REDACTED] by showing him how the phone would freeze while using the AT and T Device Unlock app. During normal handling, the phone battery suddenly became extremely hot, then exploded and caught fire. As a result of the incident, [REDACTED] suffered burns to his hand, and the fire burned a hole in the carpet inside his residence. This incident could have resulted in far more serious injuries if the phone had exploded while being held against someone’s head during a call or in close contact with the face.
Prior to the battery failure, the phone had already shown repeated signs of malfunction and instability. I do not currently have photographs of the damage because I no longer have a working phone available, but I intend to provide photographs as soon as possible. As of April 29, I will be returning to the AT and T store with this report and the damaged device so the phone can be inspected and the matter addressed.

The product, in the report: The product’s name is Motorola G Fast smart phone. The color is white (at the back - the front is the screen of a smart phone). The dimensions are about 2 inches of the width and 5 inches of the length.
I report about the too bad quality / safety of a Motorola g fast cell phone which I used, that means, only about four or five months after first activation, the Motorola g fast became swollen - with cracked / opened right side. I used the Motorola G Fast smart phone normally. No injury happened. However, I stopped using the Motorola G Fast smart phone immediately because of the risk of explosive battery.

My screen protector eventually was chipped on all four corners and along the rim of the screen, all around the phone. I bought the phone brand new in oct.2024. by Oct 2025, I couldn’t use my device at all due to the screen cracks and static looking colors trying to emit images.. Motorola G play 2024. I had my phone plugged into the USB c charger connected to the wall for about a day. I took it off the charger and set it on the counter . 45 seconds later the phone shot Into sparks and lava fire shot out of the phone the battery blew up and caught the kitchen on fire, disentograting the lanoloum. Black yellow red and grey Smoke shot out of phone and filled the trailer up with toxic fumes...I have several witnesses to verify this event. The product, in the report: motorola razr 2023 Android verison 15
I first reported this to motorola the same day it initially happened on July 13, 2025. The screen on my Razr 2023 continues to smoke. There is smoke literally comin up off of the screen for no reason. It has happened dozens of times since that first time. Unplugged! Screen doesnt seem to be warm. The screen is on when it happens randomly. I have sent motorola emails, submissions through their customer service portals, i have called over & over to no avail. This is my only means to work. I need the phone but its scary when it happens.i have videos nd photos of this phenomenon. Sent it to them to no avail.

Hurt, no treatment Made Jul 2, 2025, sent to the company Jul 8, 2025, published by CPSC Jul 22, 2025
The product, in the report: Motorola smartphone , came with original Motorola wall charger. Standard size touchscreen [REDACTED] phone. The phone caught fire while charging. MOTOROLA EDGE 2021 NEBULA BLUE/has a 6.8-inch display and measures 6.65 x 2.98 x 0.35 inch
I purchased a smartphone directly from Motorolas official website. While charging, the device suddenly caught fire, causing serious physical, financial, and emotional harm.
During the incident, I inhaled heavy smoke, which worsened my pre-existing respiratory condition. I also suffered a burn injury on my left thumb.
Important work files and personal data stored on the phone were completely lost.
My professional work was disrupted, I suffered financial losses, and endured significant emotional distress.
The incident happened in a rental property, and I have been under constant stress because I struggled to explain the situation to my landlord.
I filed a formal complaint with Motorola, providing all evidence and requesting $5,000 in compensation. Initially, they responded by saying there would be a step-by-step process, but later closed my case without any notice.
When I followed up, they replied again but only asked me to call them, ignoring my clear request to communicate in writing for trust and documentation reasons.
Finally, they asked me to return the device and charger, along with a signed form and written statement. At this point, I do not trust Motorola, fearing they may tamper with or destroy evidence, or try to close the matter without a proper investigation.
I am keeping all documentation and evidence, and demand that this process be handled transparently, formally, and in writing.
My requests are:
Compensation of $5,000 USD for the damages I suffered,
All communication to be conducted in writing,
A full independent investigation before surrendering the device or charger,
An official review of Motorolas negligence and appropriate action by the relevant authorities.

The product, in the report: Cell phone
Sent to information center Summary of phone destruction on January 16, 2023
At about 12:05 p.m. on Monday, January 16, 2023, the Motorola cell phone previously purchased from Verizon in Menomonie WI started to heat up and start on fire while in the back pocket of [REDACTED]. [REDACTED] grabbed the phone with bare hands and threw in on the floor. Within seconds it was so hot that plastic parts of the phone dripped on the floor on our home. Almost immediately an extremely toxic smoke filled the house. The phone was carried up the basement stairway and thrown in the snow outside where it continued to bum for a while. [REDACTED] wife [REDACTED] burned her hand as she assisted [REDACTED] in getting the burning phone outside. Burnt liquid plastic dropped on the wooden floor in the house. [REDACTED] clothes were all stained with burn marks and his underlying skin was reddened.
The house, especially the basement, was saturated with the most irritating toxic smell for more than a day. The house was aired out the best we could but some of the smell exists two days later. Both [REDACTED] and [REDACTED] acquired sore throats and headaches in the 12 hours following the incident. So now what? After visiting the local Menomonie Verizon store on the 16th and 1 no resolutions were offered to address the damages since there were no supervisors available. An appointment was made at the Eau Claire corporate office on January 18th where this document was shared. First, let us state that this traumatic incident has significantly affected both [REDACTED] and [REDACTED]. We expect that Verizon will agree that this is an extraordinary event. We expect Verizon to offer to reasonably cover the damages and losses we experienced which include: Replace the cell phone Pay for damaged clothing Pay for cleaning the floor. Pay a settlement for the toxic smell remaining in the house. Pay a settlement for the personal health effects.

The product, in the report: Motorola G Power cell phone with built-in 5000mAh battery
My Motorola G power cell phone battery is swelling and pushing through the case. The phone was purchased Sept. 8, 2019. It has very little power on time and is kept indoors. I am afraid it might explode and I don’t know if it is safe to keep. I reported this to Motorola for advice but so far no one has got back to me.

The product, in the report: Cell phone. 2020 Motorola Razr 128GB NOIR (MOTXT20001). IMEI: 355573090480796 ICCID: 89148000005628575144
On Friday, June 5th around 2AM I got out of bed and went downstairs to watch TV. I plugged my phone- a new Motorola Razr that I pre-ordered back in January (delivered in February), into the same charger I use every day, placed it on the coffee table and turned on the TV. After watching TV for about an hour I decided to go back to bed. When I went to pick up the phone and go back to bed I screamed in pain and dropped the phone on the floor. It had gotten incredibly hot. It was like grabbing a hot pan out of the oven. The phone was smoking and the case was starting to melt. I suffered minor burns on my hand and there was no significant property damage- but if I had fallen asleep it would have started a fire. It could have burned the house down and my family could have been seriously hurt or killed.
The phone was rendered inoperable and Motorola has refused to make things right. They have been jerking me around for more than a week.

The product, in the report: Motorola Moto G6 (black)
This complaint is regarding a Motorola Moto G6. I had the device in my pocket and squatted down. Next time I went to take it out of my pocket, both the screen and the back cover of the phone were shattered, and multiple shards of glass got stuck in my fingers and in my pocket. This device can’t handle normal movement while in your pocket, and it should not break in such a way that it can cut people.

The product, in the report: Moto G4 phone (white), Model XT1625, the charger was the one that came with the phone (black cord and black box)
I was plugging my phone (Moto G4) in to charge. I use the cord provided with my phone which includes a cord with a mini-USB end to go into the phone and a USB side that plugs into a converter box and the provided converter box has a USB inlet for the cord-side and the prongs which plug into the wall. (I apologize that my technical vocabulary is lacking.) The converter box seems to have some sort of “turbo” effect as it makes the phone charge quickly. I already had my phone attached to the cord and the cord plugged into the converter box. As I plugged the prongs into the wall outlet (barely the tips were in), a giant yellow-white spark occurred between the outlet and prongs. I instinctively pulled back and noticed the metal prongs were covered in black “soot” (probably oxidation caused by the high current), and the plastic immediately around the prongs was discolored and shinier than the rest of the box. The tongs were warm but I was able to touch them within a few seconds. Also, the outlet no longer had power as the spark had tripped the circuit breaker, but it reset fine. My phone didn’t seem harmed. I have not tried using the converter box since; instead I am using a non-turbo converter which takes longer but doesn’t pose a hazard.

The product, in the report: Motorola droid razor maxx for verizon
I have owner 2 droid razor Max phones. The first became extremely hot while in use and would not shut down. It was so hot it melted my phone e holder and mishappened the phone case. Verizon replaced it with a certified used phone. This phone became so hot while not in use that I burned my hand picking it up. My game turned bright red but healed under cool water. Verizon now refuses to replace the phone andotorola wants me to ship them the phone. I believe the batteries are a true fire hazard.
