Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

The product, in the report: Apple iPhone 15, pink
I bought my daughter an iPhone 15 for a gift. It was sent in the mail and overheated to an alarming temperature that burned her hand (caused redness) and she put it down quickly. We brought it back to an XFINITY store and returned it. About 2 months ago, it started doing the same thing. An update was given to her but we get an error message and are unable to upload the update. I’m afraid that the temperature will cause a fire.

No incident, no one hurt Made Nov 18, 2025, sent to the company Nov 21, 2025, published by CPSC Dec 8, 2025
The product, in the report: iPhone 16 Plus, White
What Happened: I own an iPhone that is approximately 60 days out of warranty. Recently, the internal battery began to swell significantly, causing the back glass of the phone to separate and lift away from the frame. The device has never been dropped, damaged, opened, or exposed to any unusual conditions. It has only been used under normal, everyday circumstances. I took the device to an Apple Store. The Apple technician examined the phone and told me it is unsafe to use due to the swollen lithium-ion battery. However, Apple refused to cover the repair or replacement, even though this is clearly a safety-related failure, not normal wear. They stated that something happened internally that we caused, without any evidence and despite the fact that we did nothing to damage the device. This leaves me with an unsafe product that Apple acknowledges poses a safety hazard, yet they are requiring me to pay for the repair out of pocket. Lithium-ion battery swelling can lead to rupture, fire, or thermal runaway. I am filing this report because I believe this is a product safety defect that Apple is not appropriately addressing. Why I’m Reporting: A lithium-ion battery expanding to the point of pushing the phone apart is a significant fire and safety risk. Apples refusal to take responsibility for a dangerous defect outside the warranty period is concerning. I am reporting this incident so the CPSC is aware of a potential safety issue. Product: Apple iPhone Hazard: Swollen lithium-ion battery causing device separation and potential fire risk.

Hurt, no treatment Made Jul 16, 2025, sent to the company Jul 21, 2025, published by CPSC Aug 4, 2025
The product, in the report: Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max smartphone device with a 6.7-inch display, originally purchased as a new (non-refurbished) unit. Battery was replaced on June 30, 2025, by [REDACTED] (Georgetown, TX), which is an Apple-authorized service provider. Color: Black. The product exploded while idle, emitting smoke and causing a fire response.
On July 3rd, 2025, at approximately 7:00 PM, my iPhone 12 Pro Max exploded while sitting idle on a piece of gym equipment at [REDACTED] in Austin, TX. The phone had undergone a battery replacement on June 30, 2025, at [REDACTED] in Georgetown, TX, through their [REDACTED] repair service, which is an Apple-authorized provider.
The phone was not charging, in use, or being touched at the time. It spontaneously emitted thick smoke and began to combust. The incident caused panic and led to the evacuation of the gym. The fire department was called, and the facility shut down for the remainder of the day. While no one was physically injured, the situation created a public safety hazard and could have easily resulted in burns, smoke inhalation, or worse had anyone been closer to the device.
I am now dealing with potential fallout from [REDACTED] or their insurer and am seeking accountability from [REDACTED] and Apple. I am submitting this report to alert the CPSC of the serious risks posed by faulty lithium-ion battery replacements performed through authorized channels.

The product, in the report: iPhone 12 pro gold
On 12/8/2021 I purchased an iphone 12 pro from the Apple Store in Jacksonville, FL after being told my current phone was unable to be repaired. The phone I purchased that day physically burns me at times to the point it is dangerous for me to touch it. This happens in cool, air conditioned areas and is not a result of the temperature in the air. I used a surface temperature reader I have and the back of the iphone read at 105 degrees. I have this all recorded and proof of this if needed. I have contacted Apple about this numerous times since the date it began and they will not help me aside from telling me I either have to drive an hour and a half away to their store, which I am unable to do currently or use the express mail option, requiring I prepay a hold on my card of $1000 and upon receiving the phone back will get approx $800 of it back! I have asked for other solutions like being able to exchange it at a local reseller, but they don’t work with me. They always demand I get a call back from some other person and I explain over and over the phone is burning me to touch, but it does not matter to them apparently. My fingertips have been burned numerous times attempting to use this phone and I am also afraid it can end up starting a fire and possibly burning my house down, which I am a single Mom and this is very scary and unacceptable! The paperwork says they agree to replace the phone at no cost if it is sold defective, which it was.

The product, in the report: Apple iPhone 6, 16Gb memory latest IoS
Plugged in phone 6, using an apple provided charger, to charge it overnight as I always do. Was plugged in for approximately 10 hours. Extremely hot. I took the protective case off and the phone came apart. It was not the screen separating. The phone was dead. It remained too hot to pick up for almost 4 hours.
I took it to an Apple store but saw 6 different people and none could help. Ended up going to Verizon Wireless store and purchasing a new phone. Due to safety concerns I left the iPhone 6 with them.

The product, in the report: iPhone 7
I bought my son a iPhone 7 for Christmas. Last Friday this two month old phone blew up on him while he was talking on it. He suffered a burn to the lip from it. I of course called Apple and sent pics of the phone. After them sending me on a wild goose chase, I came up empty handed with no replacement phone. They also informed me their safety team said it didn’t happen as I described. The burnt port hole at the bottom says otherwise. As does the kids around him and a couple of adults that were on the trip as chaperones. The phone will not take charge and is useless. BE CAREFUL APPLE LOVERS. These guys do not stand behind their products or their customers!!

The product, in the report: i phone 6 s
I have an i phone 6S. On Sunday Feb 28 the phone would not charge no matter what wall socket or charger was used. Sunday night I plugged to phone into to charge thinking it will or it won’t. I got up Monday and I had 10% charge. I was home sick from work. So I thought I better call Verizon while I can get to the phone number in my phone. I went to get a landline and called and told them what was going on. They agreed to send new phone and advised me to shut phone off until I felt better to save battery and back phone up later. I turned the phone off four times and it just turned itself back on. Thinking I am not going to have any way to backup I better do it now. So off to computer and plugged USB cable from phone to my computer. No longer than it took for me to connect to the Internet and I smelled smoke. My i phone toasted my computer. Total loss. I called Apple. Their only concern was that I was alright. My concern is had I wondered off to get a cup of coffee or answered the phone my house may have burnt down. My husband was home and verified yes you have smoke coming out of your computer black smoke lots of it. We unplugged the surge protector to kill power to everything and then quickly disconnected all of connections on back of computer. My husband took the computer outside because we did not know if it was still burning. P The high voltage through my USB port cable from phone burnt up the USB ports in the flash card reader than the cable from it to the main motherboard was so hot it melted and scorched the cable. The high voltage burnt the cable end at the motherboard and damaged mother board. In the end a fried computer. People need to be aware this can happen.

The product, in the report: Apple iPhone 3Gs cell phone
Apple iPhone 3Gs battery expanded during charging. This caused the screen to separate from the case. This also caused the circuit board to crack and pulled the screws out of the case. I have two issues with this: 1. This is a potential hazard as the battery could catch fire or explode causing injury. 2. The nature of the failure has rendered an expensive piece of equipment useless.
The manufacturer had to be aware of this as reports across the internet date back to 2011. At no time did they tell their customers that this was a potential problem. Had I known about this I would have replaced the battery.

Cellphones that have their batteries sealed within the units purchased by caller’s company sometime in 2010 with no problems until now.
Caller is reporting that around the beginning of December 2013, his 7 daughter was holding her phone when the screen cracked, she brought it to her father who noticed that the front and back was bulging.
He contacted the manufacturer who advised him that his warranty had expired and that it could be dangerous for them to attempt repair because the phone had bulging in the back and the front.
December 18th, 2013 his 13yr old daughter brought her phone to him saying it looked weird and when he took it he noticed that the screen is beginning to bulge.
He went online to research, found that this is happening with other phones and he wanted the public aware.
There are no injuries to be repeated.
The caller has not contacted the manufacturer regarding this second phone but does intend to contact them.

iPhone 3GS phone expanded separating the screen from the phone case. After searching on line and on the Apple forums I learned the battery swells and expands in the phone causing the case to separate and screen to crack. There are also white spots when the screen is touched trying to “snap” the screen back in. I read on line the battery could explode although that has not occurred, yet. The phone was not on the charger when this occurred. It was unplugged and on the kitchen counter out of sunlight in a controlled climate. The Apple store in my area claims to have never had this complaint before so they aren’t sure how to help me.

My iphone 3gs was dead so I plugged it in to the charger and set it on the couch. An hour or so later, husband hears a loud pop and smells a foul odor. Unplugged iphone from charger, but didn’t realize what had happened until my daughter brings me the phone. The battery exploded and the pressure of the explosion popped the iphone open. Had we not been in the living room when it happened, it could have caught the couch on fire. This is a serious safety issue and needs to be addressed asap! I still have my original iphone that’s 6 years old and it is still fine. My kids use these two phones as their ipods and I definitely don’t feel they are safe anymore.

I have had an iPhone 3GS since 2009. I have not used it much recently and when I went to turn it on, it was dead, and no matter how many times it would be charged, it would die out after a little while and only really worked when it was plugged in. I noticed it bulged, but I thought it was an optical illusion due to the case it was in. Well, when I was powering it down yesterday, I saw light emitting from the sides of the glass, underneath. I immediately went online to look for a video on how to remove the battery, as I knew this was the only thing it could be. When I opened the case the motherboard was bent and the battery underneath was very much bloated to 4x it’s height. This is a hazard and it could’ve exploded in my drawer had I not had the presence of mind to disassemble the phone to remove the dangerous lithium battery. This battery was not in any kind of heat situation, in fact, it was by a window and is in the coolest part of the room.

I replace my iPhone 3GS with the iPhone 5. I decided I would still use the 3GS for games, wifi & music. I charged it & it seemed fine, then after charging again the face seemed to push out a little, by morning the whole top part of face was off. I called apple and they said the battery expanded. I thought this might be a recall issue and they told me no, this isn’t a wide spread issue with this phone. But after researching on the Internet it does seem to be an issue with this phone. They told me I can pay to replace the battery since it was out of warranty.

After charging my iPhone 3gs 32gig the battery swelled up and became very hot. I contacted apple about this and they told me that this happens when the battery comes to the end of it’s life. If the charger would not have been plugged in to a GFI outlet that tripped when the phone did this makes me think it could have started a fire. Plus with the battery doing this also make it dangers to anyone who keep the phone in their pocket. with the screen expanding out like this and it being made out of glass can break and cause injury. or the battery it’s self could start leaking. I have kids that played with this phone and it could have easily hurt them.

My iPhone 3gs is 3 years old and was working fine 2 days ago when it was last charged successfully. I charged my iPhone 3gs using the Apple charger and the next day discovered that the phone had swollen and was no longer working. It appears that the battery has swollen and the swelling was enough to crack the back case which now bulges. The front screen has been pushed out andfront screen has been pushed out It looks like it is still expanding and is under pressure. It looks very unsafe both from the possibility of the battery exploding and of the case bursting open under pressure.

The product, in the report: IPhone 3gs, Black, 32GB, about three years old.
I had placed my 32GB IPhone 3gs in a drawer for about two months without use. I decided to use it again and decided to charge the phone. I noticed the charge on the phone was not holding very well. After about a week of charging everyday, while the phone was disconnected, I noticed the screen had separated from the case and was pushed up. In addition, the body of the phone was bulging and warped. The phone no longer powers on.
A simple [REDACTED] search confirmed what I suspected, the battery had exploded inside pushing causing tremendous pressure against the case and screen of the phone. This is very dangerous as the item could have ignited and burned my house down. There was no signs or warning of defect.
There is a thread about this on the apple site:
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3718734?start=0&tstart=0
Here is another thread: http://www.philmug.ph/forum/f126/bloated-3gs-battery-exploded-iphone-3gs-83799/
A general [REDACTED] search for 3gs battery explosion will return several results. This product has serious defects that can cause injury. It needs to be recalled by apple.

I have (had) an Apple 8Gb iPhone 3Gs which I had been keeping in the event my new primary phone, another Apple product, decided to quit. I have occasionally been using it as an iPod touch since it was no longer connected to my cellular account. Today, the front glass separated from the housing, and a pop was heard as this happened. Upon examination, the battery pack had expanded, and while not completely bursting (yet), the battery had quadrupled in size, pushing the glass out. The ex-phone now sits in a bag, which is in another bag, which is in a box in my garage. I fear that the battery will eventually explode, and don’t want it in my living area when this happens.

Apple iPhone 3GS.
My iPhone 3GS caught on fire in the middle of the night. My wife who works the evening shift returned home around 12 midnight and noticed a burning smell. She noticed the screen on my iPhone 3GS was blinking a message, and when she picked it up, it was hot to the touch. She then noticed smoke coming out of the bottom of the phone, where the power cord/plug was connected. She removed the power plug from the bottom of the phone, and there was a small flame. The plug itself - which goes into the bottom of the phone - is brown and melted. The phone was plugged in approximately 1 hour before she got home, and I don’t want to think what may have happened if it was not one of her work nights. An Apple “advisor” stated there is not flaw in the design, and it was environmental factors. But, it literally could’ve started a house fire, as there was a flame, or possible electrocuted my wife.

On a Monday afternoon I reached into my purse after returning from a store, to grab my cell phone and happened to cut my finger on the shattered screen glass. That was the moment when I realized it had broken. I own iPhone 4S. The company website claims the display is made of ultra durable aluminosillicate glass, saying that if the phone does not live up to the claim, they should replace it under a 1-year warranty. When I went to the Apple store in Manhattan Village, an associate told me that a screen was not a part of the hardware, which is misinformation as it is, thus they could not replace it under warranty unless I pay $199 + tax.
If the phone model is defective, it should be recalled or be easily replaced free of charge. It is very easy to injure yourself on a broken glass.
Thanks
