The product, in the report: iPhone Pro 12 Max
Our sons (a minor) iPhone caught on fire . We reported this to the iPhone store in Fort Worth, then we reported it to the iPhone manufacturer per the stores recommendation but they refused to proceed with our case because we refused to send the charred iPhone to them ( our only evidence of the iPhone incident). We still have the iPhone in a bag boxed up because we were informed that it does contain poisonous chemicals after such a fire. During the investigation we submitted photos and video of the incident.

Emergency room Made Sep 2, 2026, sent to the company Sep 8, 2026, published by CPSC Sep 22, 2026
The product, in the report: Standard black Apple iPhone 12. Rectangular and standard cell phone size. It’s not the mini iPhone 12 but the basic normal standard size.
Consumer Product Safety Review Commission (CPSC) Incident ReportProduct Description: Apple iPhone 12 (Featuring a glass rear casing/back panel)Description of the Incident and Hazard:The subject product, an Apple iPhone 12, suffered a minor hairline crack on its rear glass casing. Because the device continued to operate flawlessly and displayed no technical malfunctions, I had no reasonable cause to suspect that it posed an immediate physical hazard. There were no integrated safety alerts or manufacturer warnings indicating that a fractured back panel would compromise consumer safety while the phone remained fully functional.Over a prolonged period of normal handling and carrying, the compromised structural integrity of the pressurized glass panel caused it to silently degrade. The friction of daily use pulverized the fractured glass into thousands of microscopic, needle-like splinters and volatile glass dust.Because these fragments are microscopic and highly sharp, they silently transferred from the phone’s casing into my skin without initial sensation. Over time, these shards deeply embedded themselves across my entire hands, between my fingers, onto my stomach, and above my eye. The embedded glass has caused severe, ongoing bodily harm, tissue irritation, and intense pain as the fragments continuously surface through the layers of my skin.Description of Injuries:Extensive foreign-body skin penetration resulting in thousands of deeply embedded glass shards. The injuries are concentrated heavily on both hands, between the fingers, on the abdomen, and on the facial tissue above the eye. A medical professional has evaluated the condition and confirmed the presence of deeply embedded glass, advising a conservative treatment of repeated soaking to allow the shards to naturally work themselves out, as surgical extraction would cause catastrophic tissue and nerve damage to my hands.Photographic and Medical Evidence:I possess and maintain comprehensive photographic documentation meticulously detailing the progression of these injuries, the embedded shards, and the physical trauma caused to my hands, stomach, and face. These photographs serve as permanent, undeniable evidence of the severe bodily harm caused by the silent shedding of the iPhone 12’s rear glass casing. (Note to investigator: Photos can be provided immediately upon request).

Hurt, care not known Made Aug 24, 2026, sent to the company Aug 27, 2026, published by CPSC Sep 14, 2026
The product, in the report: Brand: Apple Model: Iphone 16, Black, 5.81 Inches tall,2.82 inches wide, .31 inches deep
“On August 15th , my Apple iPhone battery unexpectedly exploded while inside my home. The battery failure caused a sudden fire, resulting in property damage to my table and a minor physical burn to my skin. The explosion also released hazardous, toxic lithium battery fumes that spread throughout my entire apartment, creating a severe air quality issue that was incredibly difficult to clear out.I contacted Apple Support and their corporate safety team. The Apple Store verified the safety risk, but the corporate safety team refused to provide a temporary loaner phone or an advanced replacement. Instead, they demanded that I surrender my primary physical evidence for a multi-week investigation while being left entirely without a working device. Apple has failed to provide a safe, timely resolution for a dangerous product defect that caused injury and property damage.”

Hurt, no treatment Made Aug 20, 2026, sent to the company Aug 25, 2026, published by CPSC Sep 10, 2026
The product, in the report: Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max smartphone, titanium frame construction, 6.7-inch display. Approximate dimensions: 159.9 x 76.7 x 8.25 mm, weight approximately 221 grams. Color: Black Titanium. Storage capacity: 256GB. Powered by an internal lithium-ion battery. Apple Repair ID: [REDACTED].
On August 1, 2026, I was at home charging my iPhone 15 Pro Max while it was resting on my leg. The phone was not in a case. Within a short time it became extremely hot, very quickly, and caused a burn injury to my leg. I have photo documentation of the injury. I had noticed the phone running unusually hot during charging for approximately two months prior to this incident.
I contacted Apple Support the same day and was directed to schedule an appointment at the Apple Store, Lincoln Park, Chicago, IL, for a Genius Bar evaluation. The earliest available appointment was August 8, 2026. At that appointment, I also reported that the phone had become extremely slow and was freezing frequently in the weeks leading up to the incident. The staff member who ran the diagnostic stated this was most likely related to the overheating. He said the device needed further technical testing, and asked me to leave it. I returned to drop it off on August 16, 2026.
On August 19, 2026, I was told Apple’s technicians declined to take the device in for further testing and that it was ready for pickup. When I called to follow up, a store manager told me diagnostics found no issue with the phone related to the overheating, and would not address the incident. When I asked what they would repair for the $699 quote given, I was told it would only cover a cracked screen, unrelated to the reported overheating and burn.

No one hurt Made Aug 15, 2026, sent to the company Aug 18, 2026, published by CPSC Sep 2, 2026
The product, in the report: Iphone 17 Pro deep blue 256 GB
I have the Iphone 17 pro. I have been having issues with the battery swelling and back glass lifting. The first time I took it in was June 16,2026 to Apple Victoria Gardens. I noticed my phone kept getting really hot and my screen had green lines on it that were appearing and disappearing . So I went in and they inspected my phone. Diagnostics and everything came out fine but they noticed the back glass lifting and that the battery appeared to be swelling. They told me it was good I even came in because it’s a hazard. So they told me I needed to get the battery replaced so I did that. Unfortunately, they did not have the part at their location so they ordered it to be at the Apple Pasadena location. I went the very next day, June 17, 2026 and got my phone fixed. They replaced the battery and screen. On August 5, 2026 I had to take it in again because my phone unexpectedly restarted and was not charging once it started back up. Again it felt really hot. I noticed the back was lifting as well again. So again they said they needed to keep my phone and inspect it. I left it there and they came back for it later on that day. They said the back was indeed lifting and had to be resealed because whoever worked on my phone did not seal it correctly at the Apple Pasadena location. I left and I thought that was it. Nope! On August 12, 2026 I am having the same issue again. The back glass is lifting once again. When I got to the Apple Victoria Gardens the lady told me there was a wait. I explained to her my situation and showed her my phone. She went in and spoke to her team lead and they let me in right away. So obviously they know my phone is a hazard and I should get it fixed right away. The person who inspected my phone said it was the battery swollen again. So I discussed my concern about the phone and if there was any option to just get a new phone because I keep going back and the same thing keeps happening. So obviously my phone has to be defective or something else may be going on, I don’t know. He pretty much gave me the run down that they can’t just give me a new phone because the parts can be changed. But I explained to him that obviously something is wrong with the phone if it is the same issue. Long story short I just left them my phone and went back later that day to get it again. They replaced my battery and glass again. I left and thought finally again it’s fine. Now August 13th, 2026 I noticed the same exact thing happening again. The back glass is lifting. I am frustrated at this point. I can’t keep going back and forth to Apple wasting my time for the same exact thing to happen again. They don’t listen. I am wasting my time and I have work. I feel like this is just ridiculous. I called Apple customer service corporate August 15, 2026 and told them my situation. I feel like they did not care either. I told them my concern about it being a hazard and letting them know I need my phone but they basically gave me the run down that I need to send in my phone to get inspected. But I can’t get a new phone. Obviously I need my phone and I can’t be without it for days. So I don’t know what to do next if no one is doing anything about my phone even though it is a hazard and the same thing keeps happening. To top it off I purchased this phone in September of 2025. So it has not even been a year with this phone and I am having these issues.

No incident, no one hurt Made Jul 19, 2026, sent to the company Jul 22, 2026, published by CPSC Aug 5, 2026
The product, in the report: Apple iPhone 13 Mini, 128GB storage, Product Red color. This device was sold as an “Amazon Renewed Premium” refurbished smartphone directly by Amazon.com, which means it was modified/refurbished by Amazon or their authorized vendors prior to sale.
Incident Description for CPSC: I purchased an “Amazon Renewed Premium” Apple iPhone 13 Mini (Order #[REDACTED]) directly from Amazon.com. During normal use, the internal lithium-ion battery catastrophically expanded and swelled, generating excessive heat and physically prying the screen completely off the device chassis.
The device is now in a state of severe thermal instability and poses an imminent fire and explosion hazard. Because it was sold as a refurbished device by Amazon, it likely contains a non-genuine, unauthorized, or counterfeit battery that lacks proper thermal safety mechanisms.
I have contacted Amazon to report this critical physical safety hazard. However, their automated systems and customer service representatives are demanding that I physically ship the severely swollen battery back to their warehouses to receive a refund. I am legally prohibited from mailing or transporting this hazardous device under DOT and FAA hazmat regulations due to the explosive risk. Amazon is effectively demanding that a customer violate federal shipping laws, while simultaneously refusing to acknowledge the physical safety hazard of the product they sold. I am requesting the CPSC to investigate Amazon’s practice of selling potentially counterfeit/unsafe lithium-ion batteries and their dangerous return policies regarding defective Hazmat items.

The product, in the report: Apple iPhone 17 - 256.0 GB - MIST BLUE
After purchasing a new iPhone 17 on January 8,2026 while my boyfriend was at work, after briefly placing the phone down to have a conversation with a coworker , the phone started smoking and eventually caught fire, which completely melted and decimated the phone. The phone exploded, breaking open and into pieces where the majority of the phone was burned to the point of turning into ash. The iPhone 17 was being used by my boyfriend for normal everyday communication. Thankfully there were no injuries sustained from the explosion, the incident occurred around February 23,2026

Seen by a doctor or nurse Made Jul 17, 2026, sent to the company Jul 23, 2026, published by CPSC Aug 6, 2026
The product, in the report: Product is an Apple iPhone 13, model number MLMM3LLA. The phone is a smartphone with a glass front and glass back, metal frame, touch screen display, rear camera lenses, charging port, and built in rechargeable lithium ion battery. The phone involved was not in a case at the time of the incident. The phone was powered on, not charging, and not on a wireless charger. The phone belonged to my friend. The phone had a pre existing crack at the top right front of the device. To my knowledge, the phone had no known water exposure, no known overheating history, and no repairs, modifications, or battery replacement while my friend had it. The current battery health shows 79 percent, but I do not know what the battery health was at the time of the incident. The phone currently displays an Apple battery health message stating that the battery health is significantly degraded and that an Apple Authorized Service Provider can replace the battery to restore full performance and capacity.
I am reporting a possible consumer product safety incident involving an Apple iPhone 13.
On the night of June 9 into the morning of June 10 2026, I was asleep in bed while my friends iPhone 13 was in the bed under or on the right side of my body. The phone was powered on, but it was not charging, not on a wireless charger, not in a case, and there was no other heat source nearby.
During the night I felt discomfort and a hot burning sensation, but I did not fully wake up or understand what was happening at first because I have a diagnosed sleep disorder that makes me difficult to wake. After several hours, the sensation became too uncomfortable. I removed the phone from my body and the hot burning sensation stopped.
Later that morning I noticed two small burn injuries on the right side of my body, one on my right arm and one on my stomach. The burns were blistered and raised. My right arm was bare and my stomach was covered by a shirt. The arm injury hurt more and burned badly when it touched anything. I took photos of the injuries the same day. The marks are still visible and look like scars.
I do not remember whether the front or back of the phone was hotter because I was not fully awake when I removed it. I also cannot confirm whether there was smoke. I did not observe burn marks on the bed or clothing.
The phone belongs to my friend, not me. To my knowledge, the phone had no prior overheating history while my friend had it, no known water exposure, and no repairs, modifications, or battery replacement. The phone currently shows battery health at 79 percent, but I do not know what the battery health was at the time of the incident.
I reported the injury to Apple and provided photos of the phone, photos of my injuries, medical documentation, the phone serial number, and completed Apples requested diagnostics by phone. Apples engineering team later requested that the phone be sent in for inspection, but Apple stated that the phone may not come back usable because it may be taken apart.
Because the phone belongs to my friend and may be key evidence, there is concern about sending it in without written replacement or reimbursement terms or written information about the inspection process.
I am reporting this because I believe the iPhone may have overheated or malfunctioned while not charging and caused burn injuries.

The smartphone developed a severe hardware defect that causes it to unpredictably overheat to an extreme degree and become entirely unresponsive. Apple technical support confirmed the issue and approved a replacement through its AppleCare+ express replacement service due to the thermal risk. However, Apple’s carrier lost the replacement device in transit. Because Apple’s system erroneously marked the original phone as already “replaced” and “returned,” Apple Store management and Customer Relations have since declined to provide an alternate in-store device swap or immediate remedy to get this hazardous unit out of circulation. This leaves a dangerous, overheating lithium-ion battery device completely unresolved and stuck in a residential household.

The product, in the report: Apple iPhone 16e
Our new Apple iPhone 16e was malfunctioning, overheating, and the phone itself has a bad burning odor coming from the inside. This is from a new Apple iphone 16e. We took it immediately to a local Apple store, which it was identified as a prematurely defective battery. Apple store employees identified a bad burning odor originating from the battery area, and also noticed that the defective battery was bulging, which has caused the case nearest the battery to break its seal. We were told to immediately STOP plugging it in, as it is a risk for igniting a fire.

I am reporting a defective Apple iPhone that has overheated since the day it was purchased and has progressively worsened over time. The device becomes extremely hot during normal use, including texting and browsing, and has caused burns to the tips of my fingers. The phone also experiences significant battery drain accompanying the overheating. I contacted Apple shortly after purchase to report the issue, and there should be documentation of that complaint. Despite this, the issue was not resolved and Apple has since declined to provide a remedy. This is a serious safety concern, as a consumer device should not cause physical injury during normal use. I am reporting this to document the hazard and prevent harm to others. Apple Case Number: [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max Black Titanium 256gb
I am filing a complaint regarding a potentially defective Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max that has been experiencing excessive overheating during normal use and charging.
Over the past several weeks, I have consistently noticed that the device becomes extremely hot to the touch, particularly while charging. The overheating became serious enough that I changed the phone battery charging settings to limit charging to 80 percent instead of 100 percent in an attempt to reduce heat buildup and prevent the device from remaining on the charger for extended periods.
On the morning of May 16 2026, the issue escalated significantly. I woke up to what appeared to be a burning smell while the phone was connected to its charger. When I checked the device, I found that it was extremely hot. After moving the phone and disconnecting it from the charger, I discovered a visible burn or heat mark on my flooring approximately the size of a quarter in the area where the phone had been resting.
I photographed the damage immediately. Based on the ongoing overheating issues and the burn mark discovered this morning, I am concerned that the device may present a serious overheating or fire hazard risk.
This overheating issue has been ongoing for weeks and has occurred repeatedly during charging and regular operation. The incident this morning significantly increased my concern regarding the safety of this device. I am also reporting this issue directly to Apple and have filed an FTC report regarding this matter under [REDACTED].

The product, in the report: iPhone 13 Pro 128gb Gold.
Last Monday (April 13th 2026) My iPhone 13 Pro began to glitch. I had charged it to 100% battery and then it randomly shut off. I turned it back on and it said 10% battery. It then shut off again when I tried to use it. I plugged it in, and when it turned back on it became 73% battery. I was very confused, so I checked my battery health, and sure enough it was no longer 80%, but it had lowered down to 77% battery health. Over the week, my phone will not stay on unless its charging. I kept checking my battery health once a day and each day I checked, it had lowered another 1%. It went from 77% battery health, to 76% and now 75%. Last wednesday I took my case off to check my battery and sure enough, it was swelling. My battery was pushing my screen out of the frame. It has gotten much worse over the past few days. I went to the apple store in [REDACTED] and asked to speak to a manager, to which the employee blew me off and registered me for a Genius bar. I waited over half an hour with no help. After the technician came, he ran some tests on my phone and concluded that the swelling was normal and due to the old age of the battery. He also told me that a swelling battery is not dangerous, and that if i were to pop the battery nothing would happen, it would only release carbon dioxide. This is dangerous and false information. He also told me that even though the back glass was broken and the battery was swollen, they would be able to replace my battery for the $89 fee but the back glass would probably be ruined. I was very upset and I contacted apple support. I spoke to a senior advisor and he brushed me off and did not show any concern to what the apple employee told me. I am very worried that my iPhone could light on fire or explode and injure me or my peers. Just to clarify, although my phone was bought renewed, the iPhone battery is original and from apple. It has never been replaced. This is clearly a manufacturing issue and not due to chemical degradation because of the severe battery health drop.

The product, in the report: Product Brand: Apple Product Model: iPhone 13
I am reporting a hazardous battery failure on my iPhone 13. The lithium-ion battery has swollen significantly, causing the internal pressure to physically detach the screen from the phone’s chassis. An Apple Store technician confirmed the battery swelling and noted that the internal pressure was so great that it likely broke the bottom screws and damaged internal structural components. While no fire has occurred yet, the device is now structurally compromised and poses a significant risk of thermal runaway or fire. I am no longer charging or using the device due to this safety risk. The manufacturer has refused to address this as a safety defect. 1. I am aware of reports from early 2026 indicating that Apple has identified a ‘global quality issue’ and an ‘internal quality program’ specifically for iPhone 13 battery swelling. Despite this, the local store refused to honor this program for my device.” 2. Because the battery is physically deformed and the screen is detached, this device is now legally hazardous to transport on commercial aircraft per FAA and DOT regulations regarding damaged lithium batteries. Apple’s refusal to repair the device locally forces me to store a confirmed fire hazard in a residential area. 3. The internal pressure was so extreme that it sheared the bottom security screws, making a standard battery-only replacement physically impossible without structural repair.

The product, in the report: iPhone 13 with swollen battery which is under a quality program of Apple but Apple refused to take care of it.
I am a California resident. My iPhone 13 was diagnosed by the Apple Store in Pasadena, CA (Case no: [REDACTED], Repair no: [REDACTED]) on Jan. 2 as having a swollen battery (fire hazard). Apple technicians confirmed this device is under an internal quality program due to a well-documented global quality issue with iPhone 13 batteries.
Despite confirming the danger, Apple refused local repair or replacement because the device was purchased in China. Furthermore, Apple Senior Advisors repeatedly advised me to personally carry this confirmed fire hazard on a commercial flight back to China. This advice directly encourages a violation of FAA regulations regarding the transport of damaged/defective lithium batteries.
Following my initial [REDACTED] complaint, a representative from Apple Executive Relations ( [REDACTED]) contacted me but refused any assistance or compensation, citing “internal policy.” Instead, he suggested I take this confirmed fire hazard to a local third-party repair shop. This recommendation is highly negligent, as it forces a consumer to transport and hand over an unstable, explosive device to an unauthorized facility, further endangering public safety.
Apple is prioritizing regional boundaries and internal policies over public safety and federal laws. As a resident, I am being forced to store a hazardous, explosive device at home. I seek a local resolution (replacement or refund) immediately.

The product, in the report: Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max , Model A3084 (256 GB). Device exhibits battery swelling, rear glass separation during air travel, overheating, spontaneous restarts, and charging instability.
A hazardous incident on December 28, 2025, during commercial air travel departing Fort Lauderdale (FLL), my iPhone 16 Pro Max physically swelled at altitude, causing severe and clearly visible separation between the rear glass and the device frame. The swelling was pronounced and observable without removing the case. This device has a documented history of overheating, unexpected restarts, charging instability, and camera focus issues since initial use. Apple previously replaced the original device shortly after purchase due to defects. The replacement device has now developed battery swelling and device separation, indicating a serious lithium-ion battery safety failure. Battery expansion in a lithium-ion device presents a significant risk of thermal runaway, fire, or explosion, particularly during air travel. I do not believe this device can be safely used or transported. Apple Support has acknowledged these issues through chat and phone communications but has not provided a timely resolution despite imminent additional air travel.

Hello, I took my phone to a phone shop named SKT Wireless in Brownsville, Brooklyn. I came to them to repair the back of my phone and the battery. They said it would take a day to fix. Still, when I came to retrieve my phone they said they were having problems with the screen (note that my screen was working perfectly fine before the repair), because of this I had to wait another day to receive my phone(they also tried to upcharge me for the screen replacement even though the screen was working before I came to them for repairs), 2 days after I receive my phone it exploded in my pants. It burnt me and my pants, when I came to them fix the problem they acted like they didnt know what happened and refused my refund. One of the workers at the store also threatened to “slap the [REDACTED] out of me” if I didn’t leave the store. I was wondering if there’s any way I can get help with this case.

My iPhone 11 has been off-gassing a toxic chemical smell every day for 3 months and counting. I have had many headaches during this time, and they only subside when I shut my phone away in an unused room. Apple has refused to honor their service agreement to replace the faulty phone through Applecare+, which I have been paying for every month for 6 years. I made 3 visits to the Apple store and contacted a senior advisor at Applecare. I have been met with nothing but denial that there’s any problem because the Apple staff could not smell it. I explained to them that it’s off-gassing, so you don’t smell it when you stick your nose to the phone, you only smell it in the environment after it builds up. The Apple store is enormous so the smell doesn’t build up there, but it definitely does in a normal home environment. At this point I have not received the promised phone call from the senior advisor, so I’m just stuck with this toxic phone, that I happen to need for work. I work from home so I have no choice but to be exposed to this toxic odor day & night. I do not have headaches normally, but during this time I have had headaches every day.

The product, in the report: Apple iPhone 15 Pro smartphone, Natural Titanium color, approximately 6.1-inch display. Device shows overheating damage in the top-left corner of the display, with screen burn and discolored pixels.
I was charging my Apple iPhone 15 Pro overnight on my bedside table using the official Apple charging cable and adapter. When I woke up in the morning, I reached for the phone and the top-left corner was extremely hot to the touch. The device was so hot it burned my arm when I brushed against it, leaving a red mark.
The overheated corner also left a scorch/burn mark on my bedside table. When I turned the phone on, the screen showed permanent damage in the top-left corner (a black orb with a green ring), consistent with overheating of the display above the logic board/battery.
Since then, the device has repeatedly heated up when charging, drains battery rapidly, and shuts down unexpectedly. I have stopped charging it because of the fire risk, but the phone remains unsafe to use.
This incident caused personal injury (burn to my arm), property damage (burn mark on wooden bedside table), and shows clear signs of product failure. I am reporting this as a serious lithium-ion battery and safety hazard.

No one hurt Made Aug 20, 2025, sent to the company Aug 25, 2025, published by CPSC Sep 9, 2025
The product, in the report: Apple iPhone 16 Plus, color black, smartphone. The device features a 6.7-inch display with dimensions approximately 6.33 inches (160.8 mm) height 3.06 inches (77.6 mm) width 0.31 inches (7.8 mm) depth. Weight is approximately 7.09 ounces (201 grams). The back is made of glass with aluminum edges.
On August 14, 2025, my iPhone 16 Plus began randomly restarting. On August 15, the battery began swelling. By the end of the day, the back glass cracked and detached, the device became very hot, and when charging, it emitted a burning smell. The battery was visibly expanding and exposed, posing a serious fire risk.
I immediately sought help:
-Best Buy (authorized Apple repair): Refused service due to back glass damage caused by the swelling battery.
-Apple Store, Century City Mall: A staff member acknowledged the danger but said no appointments were available that day.
Within hours, the phones back glass was completely separated, leaving the swollen battery exposed. Fearing fire or explosion, I had no choice but to use a third-party repair shop to remove and replace the battery immediately.
The phone continued malfunctioning (random restarts) through August 20. When I returned to the Apple Store and explained everything, Apple refused warranty service because of the third-party repair and told me to purchase a new phone. They also returned the device with the back glass not properly secured, leaving the battery partially exposed again.
This was a manufacturer’s defect and a clear safety hazard. Apple’s refusal to provide timely service left me at risk of fire, smoke, or injury. I am reporting this incident to the CPSC for investigation.

The product, in the report: Apple IPhone 13 serial number CQ14H9KWPL
I am submitting this complaint to formally report a potential fire and safety hazard involving the battery in my Apple iPhone 13. The battery in my device has overheated and physically expanded, creating significant concern for my personal safety and for those around me.
The phone was used according to Apples guidelines, and has never been subjected to misuse, unauthorized repairs, or extreme environmental conditions. Despite this, the battery began to swell and caused the device to bulgean alarming issue that raises serious safety implications, including the potential for thermal runaway or fire.
I have contacted Apple to seek a resolution, but I feel this issue may reflect a wider manufacturing defect or design flaw that warrants further investigation. The combination of heat, battery expansion, and device distortion makes this a matter of urgent consumer protection.
For the safety of myself and other consumers, I respectfully request that the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission investigate this matter and assess whether Apples iPhone 13 line poses a broader risk related to battery overheating or failure.
Please let me know if you require photographs, serial numbers, or additional documentation. I am willing to cooperate fully in providing all relevant information.

My iPhone 15 Pro Max back camera glass is very easily shattered (as well as other newer iPhones too), and when grabbing my phone even a while after the incident took place, it cut my finger when I never expected that at all, and I even found random shards fallen off in general. Apple makes their repair way too expensive for something as hazardous as this.

The product, in the report: iPhone 14, model MPUA3LL/A
A couple weeks after purchasing an iPhone 14, I began experiencing hand pain as soon as picking up my an iPhone (14). As soon as I began holding it, I feel pins and needles and sometimes a burning sensation inside my hand. This usually occurs on my right had as I am right handed but if I switch hands, my left hand feels it too.
I recently purchased a new iPhone. It is my (approximately) 4th iphone, and I have had an android phone before. I have never experienced this before. I am a 12+ year professional, working predominantly in an office setting. I know what carpal tunnel syndrome, texting thumb, and other type issues are. This is not the same. A quick internet ([REDACTED]) search will reveal that others experience this. I do not know if its a battery thing, or something else, but somebody needs to look into this, please.

First aid Made Jun 4, 2024, sent to the company Jun 10, 2024, published by CPSC Jun 25, 2024
The product, in the report: Apple iPhone 15 titanium pro max
The Apple iPhone 15 pro max titanium is dangerously defective. It emits a constant low voltage electrical current constantly even when not connected to a charger, but also when in use. It is measurable with a multimeter and an oscilloscope. I have personally had more than one of these devices that have done this, and there are (after some light research) similar complaints online and in my social circle. When in use it give a constant oscillating voltage that is passed into points of contact, such as your hands. It starts as a tingle or pulsing, which turns uncomfortable the longer you use it. It causes discomfort and tingling, either stinging or numbness during short term use like a phone call, and when used longer it leads to muscle contractions, a burning/ frostbite like feeling in the hands, arms, etc, loss of tactile function, as well as localized swelling in my situation (i have photos) that takes days to subside, even if/ when you stop using the phone. There is also a steady drainage of the battery as this occurs which causes the phone to not function as it should in terms of charge time (but that is a non-concern in comparison) . It also gets extremely hot. Apple refuses to acknowledge the issue and claims it is static electricity when you first complain. If you pursue the issue they continue to deny it is happening even though employees at the Apple Store (and many other individuals) can feel it happening with the defective devices. My first phone to do this was eventually replaced when it became such a problem that it started creating errors in the phones function. It was replaced with the same model, and the new one does exactly the same. When reported to Apple i was told it cant happen, especially twice, despite my first device being replaced for exactly this issue. Apple customer support refuses to acknowledge the issue, except for those who will say it is an accepted issue within their threshold of risk. The associated risk of having electricity transfer from my phone to my body in a way that causes discomfort and tactile problems should be zero. Their solution is to purchase a heavier case or a different model or brand of phone. I shouldnt have to purchase an accessory or anything else to not be hurt by my phone. Especially when I am already using a silicone case from Apple, a glass screen protector, and their mag safe charging system with a surge protector for extra caution. This has been happening since receiving my first of this model in January 2024 and is currently still happening. My first phone was replaced on May 27th 2024. It should also be noted that this problem does not fall under their limited warranty, as per customer service.

The product, in the report: Name: iPhone 13 Pro, Color: Graphite, Size: 6.1”, Dimensions: (5.78 x 2.81 x 0.30 in)
What happened that made you want to report? The volume of calls on iPhone are dangerously high, even worse for people with hearing disabilities. The minimum call volume on an iPhone is around -52db and the maximum call volume on iPhone is -100db which is very loud and can be dangerous.I used both a hardware and software decibel meter. It obvious the volume range is not set right since when the volume is only at 50% the quality of the call is very low, choppy. having this volume range set so high compare to what is used to be before iOS 16 make it hard to make calls with headphones and use the internal speaker (not speaker mode). before iOS 16 the iPhone used to let you lower the volume to nothing, it was nice to avoid hold music during a call. the max used to be around 60db it was more then loud enough then. now its just unacceptable and poor quailty. What type of product(s) were being used? apple iPhone 13 Pro Who was using the product(s)? myself How were the product(s) being used? to make phone calls using apple headphones and with just the internal speaker to ear Were there any injuries that happened or may have happened while using the product? yes, the volume of the call could not be lowered any more and resulted in sharp pain in my one ear that has hyperacusis, my other ear is normal and even then had major discomfort from the minimum call volume that is set by iOS to high. How did any injuries occur? making a phone call while apple headphones where in and also just using basic speaker to ear.

The product, in the report: While that is a fair line on what is a product and a service, Health app for iOS is a Digital Health Product that monitors peoples health, and in my situation it provide a means to remind me to take my medications. Critical Alerts needs to be an optional but permanent part of the Health App.
The Health App that is part of iOS on Apple iPhone removed the Critical Alerts for medications. This is an essential and critical need for people to be reminded to take there medications; especially those who have memory problems and have life dependent medications this feature is essential on the Health App. The Health app was being use for medication reminders and after a notification when off silently and was ignored or forgotten a few mins later the critical alert would blare an alarm reminding me to take my medication and wouldn’t stop repeating until it was taken. Since apple took away this important feature I have forgot to take my meds reportedly and it has lead to major withdraw effects an increase in pain. which was added to iOS in 16.4 then removed in 16.5, and added to iOS 17 beta development, it should have not been removed from iOS 16!!!! you don’t implement a critical feature then take it away bc you want to make it a marketing pointer for your new upcoming iOS. totally unprofessional putting ppls health at risk like that .

I have an iPhone 12 Pro Max. I use AirPods Pro in my old truck. Occasionally I will press the volume up button on my iPhone to raise the volume one level. Sometimes my iPhone will glitch and instantly raise the volume to 100%, which is extremely painful, and obviously damages my hearing. This doesn’t happen when I lower the volume one level, only when I raise it.
I’ve reported this to Apple several times, initially over 2 years ago, and it still hasn’t been fixed, and others are talking about it online. This has occurred with a different iPhone, and my current iPhone running various iOS versions, it also has occurred with 4 different pairs of AirPod Pros, both V1, and V2.

I then made an appointment with Best Buy and at the appointment yesterday they said they wouldn’t replace the battery because it’s swollen.
I’m not sure how dangerous these situations are but Apple support didn’t seem to think the battery was a problem and Best Buy does?
The iPhone battery monitor shows the battery as being good with 95% life left.

The product, in the report: The product is a smart phone iPhone. Similar to the ones in all publications.
I purchased a new Smart phone at our local Verizon Store located in Pittsford Place, Monroe Avenue, Rochester, New York 14618.
When I went to charge the battery the plug when removed from the electrical socket was extremely hot. I went to plug it into another room’s socket when I received a shock from the smart phone surface.
I brought it back to the Verizon store and explained what had happened. They told me they could replace it for another smart phone but I was worried it might be a problem with that model. I suggested they report my complaint to the CPSC under Section 15. They told me they never heard of the CPSC and had to way to do it. I previously called the toll free number to report this incident. It was suggested I contact this division and write up what happened to me.
I don’t know what else I can add to this report.

The product, in the report: Brand new Apple iPhone 7
I received a brand new Apple iPhone 7 as a gift in December 2017. It was activated a few months later, and not long after that I started to experience burning, itching, aching pains in my forearms whenever I would hold and use this phone. If I put this phone in my pants pocket, it would cause a localized burning, itching aching pain on my leg. If the phone was turned off or set to “Airplane” mode the pains would cease to occur. Other times if I had been holding the phone for too long, the pain would linger for days after.
The least painful way I found to use this phone was to not hold it and lay it on a flat surface, but this only proved to slightly lessen the pain. Eventually the pain escalated to the point that I made an appointment with my Physician, and I was advised to stop using this phone. I even applied bags of ice to both my forearms to alleviate the pain, but that only helped slightly. I am now scheduled to see an orthopedic specialist.
There is quite a bit of anecdotal evidence on the internet that many Apple products (i.e. Apple watches, iPads, iPhones) are causing many people physical symptoms. This is a very real problem that may be posing a great risk to Apple users and should be investigated as soon as possible.

The product, in the report: Cell Phone I could possibly ask someone to email them for me. This manufacturer can apparently not be reached by phone. Retailer: Purchased through Verizon Retailer state: Oregon Manufacturer address: Apple
In June 2015 I bought an i-phone touch-screen phone. Starting to use it, after 20 minutes of holding it my fingers began having a buzzing feeling. The phone got hot to my touch + the buzzing sensations quickly travelled to my elbows through my hands + lower arms, along with a heavy fatigued feeling that began to be painful I put the phone down. But the symptoms continued.
The next day I took the phone to the Apple store. A manager tested it + said it was working normally. He suggested I try a stylus + shielding case but I could feel the voltage through these.
An electrical engineer who’s a friend of mine told me that “the iphone was injecting a signal into my nervous system that my nervous system can’t handle” I returned the phone.
But the painful symptoms in my hands + arms lasted for about 6 weeks. During that time a doctor advised me to “use my hands as little as possible until the symptoms subside.”
I have a history of tendinitis which is irritated by typing + clicking, so I generally avoid computer use. I thought the phone might be ok because it has voice dictation. However I learned that the charge emitted by touch screen devices brings on +/or escalates all symptoms.
A customer service tech at Apple + a manager at Verizon both told me that “other people have also reported sensitivity to this voltage.” I’ve since found out that the newer phones emit an even stronger signal.
I feel that these devices could have a warning label, + that there should be alternatives to this technology for people who could be injured by it.

The product, in the report: IPhone 7 Plus 32 GB
My daughter [REDACTED] has an I phone 7 Plus rose colored 32 GB. She has had it for around a year. She has never had problems with it until recently. Over this past weekend she was talking on her phone, ended her call and put her phone in her purse, so she could enter her apartment. She placed the phone in her purse with only her wallet also in there. It is a light wallet and nothing protruding from it. After she entered her apartment she pulled out her phone and went to press the home button and there was a message that read: unable to use Touch ID thumbprint. She also looked closely and saw there was a tiny crack on the home button, but no cracks anywhere else. The only issue up to this point she had been having was that the home button had seemed warmer than normal. Anyway, she switched the phone so that she could use it without the use of the home button. She called and told me there was a tiny crack but nothing else. Yesterday she called me to say not only was the phone hot, it burned her inner arm in the shape of the home button. She had taken a nap and the phone was next to her. Her arm can’t in co tact with the phone and burned her only where the home button was located. Immediately she called me and sent me pics. She called [REDACTED], our provider, and they told her she should not just use insurance or have the home button replaced but instead should contact Apple since there was an injury. She called Apple spoke to a lady who put her in contact with a man named [REDACTED]. He told her they would look into it, asked for pics and said he would confer with people in the engineering department. He contacted further and wanted to see every aspect of the phone. In the end they said even though there was no indention which may have caused the small crack, the point he made to her earlier, but that it was her fault and it can be replaced at her cost. At no time did they put her in contact with the safety department. Then I called. A nice lady looked up the account, saw the pics, and was appalled it was never sent to the safety department. They put me in touch with safety and I was told it needed to be replaced and to discontinue use, it was her fault she was burned because it should not have been next to her and once the engineering department made the decision there was nothing that could be done.

The product, in the report: Iphone 7 Black, Bought in September 2016
Last Friday Morning around 7:30am PST, my iphone 7 was all sudden explored on my couch. It was shaking for about 30 seconds with a large amount of chemical smoke coming out. (I have attached all the photos for your reference).
Fortunately, none of the family members were injured at this point. But we were all shocked by the incident. I ran to the apple store twice and was told that they could do nothing for me only if I left the damaged phone to them and they will give me a replaced iphone 7. I would be okay with that if my new couch wasn’t also burned with this big hole in the middle due to the incident and it cost $1700+Tax+ Transportation Fee.
I changed my mind and requested them to return the damaged the phone back to me. After I went home, I did more research and found that I am not the only victim, some people had experienced even worse situations, and Apple has not done anything to them, and all that they are trying to do is the put the blame on the users. Here are some links:
[REDACTED] [REDACTED]
[REDACTED] [REDACTED]
You can actually find more. I am surprised that after so many bad incidences, iPhone Product still has a big problem and they never admitted that this is their phone’s problem, and never try to apologize to the people who have been suffered through the incident, no recall, no improvement etc.
I am wondering if you can help step in and take a look at the damaged phone to see why this is happening? if their iPhone 7 are not safe enough for the customers to use, they should not be selling them and an immediate recall is needed. And at least compensate and apologize to the victims and being serious.
I would not be able to sleep these days since I am so scared and kept thinking if I was on the call, or if my baby was holding the phone or if this happened during the night when we were all in deep sleep, will we still live today.
I still have the damaged phone with me, I would really appreciate if something can help me to take a look at the phone, and I am just trying to do my social responsibilities.
Feel free to reach out to me at [REDACTED], thanks a lot,

My daughter plugged her iPhone cord into her iPhone7 Plus to charge. After 20 minutes of charging, she went to unplug her phone and the connector and cord at the phone sparked, got hot, burned her finger and had a small flame. After unplugging the phone from the cord the cord was still smoldering. At which point she unplugged the outlet strip from the wall. Her apple charger was plugged into the outlet strip. We went to the Apple store with the phone, charger and cord. They ran a test on the phone and said the phone is not defective and would not replace it. We elected to escalate the issue with Apple Corporate and are waiting for their response.

Emergency room Made Feb 5, 2018, sent to the company Feb 13, 2018, published by CPSC Feb 28, 2018
The product, in the report: Black 128 GB iPhone 7 series
The product was a cell phone. Apple iPhone 7 series little over a year old and liked it a lot no damages and very reliable. It like many electronics I own become obsolete once a new addition comes out and a holiday comes around with my partner and I. Electronics are fun, and interesting. So we had pre-ordered the X series iPhone and I guess skipped a coulee generations. anyways I acquired the X but still was so used to the 7 I would have both around to function my household devices. I had iPad also.
I got up from movie used the rest room placed the iPhone 7 in pocket and X on charger and returned to couch to watch remainder of movie on my apple TV program.. Now Im sure you’ve heard use it so much your attached to the hip. Well This product out ta all series I’ve owned 1-10 and all I’ve done this with and nothing would provoke such heat while in my pocket. I passed out on couch as movie was very boring and very tired. I manage to sleep on my side that phone was in not even crossing my mind about what was in pocket at time of falling asleep as I didn’t plan on it it just happened. I do remember waking up for a brief moment with discomfort but was so tired I went back to sleep thinking it was probably just a sharp object or shorts bunched up itch or whatever I handled the discomfort and fell back to sleep. I proceeded to wake the next morning with the pain sharpening as if a rash had aspired and it became itchy and as i began my morning routine felt the discomfort get stronger and stronger, Oh i forgot to mention I got up groggy and noticed the object like stuck to my hip threw the cloth layer of my pocket and I peeled it off my skin as I didn’t even think twice cause I hit the restroom every morning as I finish my you know what I had shorts off and started to itch that area as it was very painful all the sudden so I rubbed it and the skin just began to peel and blister and pop and oozes out watery substance blistering up and popping and blood interring up and popping multiple times. I freaked out and took a shower showed my partner and we both agreed due to the impression of blister burns and what I noticed I slept on my cell phone had oddly burned me and is creating second to third degree burns. I agreed and went to primary doctor. but was advised to go to emergency room at west memorial. On my way using hands free device I used my X as I placed 7 in plastic bag thinking it might be a chemical leakage or I don’t know I started to panic as the person who took call on way to hospital seemed in more of a panic then me. stating they will take care of this and so forth. telling me to do this do that we will take care of you so I was reassured I had no concerns about safety and do forth with costs and things. So he makes me jump threw hoops as he tells me a list of things to do and send in with e-mail. So after confirmation from doctor in ER and care. I take pictures video and prove to company it was by pattern of burns outline cell phone and areas of product where not damaged and all that a few days latter I get a call from that senior advisor with a completely different attitude telling me that apple wasn’t going to take responsibilities and that they refer to the terms and regulations and don’t report it to any agency I begin to become upset as he is referring and putting words in my mouth saying I’m going to slander. I was thrown back as I was in pain and still have the scares as this happened a couple months ago its just been a hassle with them as they at first handled it poorly and somehow this first senior advisor disappeared and a new guy was going to help me a high escalated gentle man who actually produced a case number as the first guy seemed to have be trained to do what he did as they always refer to engineering and what engineering says to do. I was so thrown back as I go from painful injured victim to a criminal by the first senior advisor. I am now with a safety manager. A lot more professional and a lot more advanced in his knowledge on how to handle as he produced a case number and went to it appropriately. long story shortened I have spent countless hours with customer service as they called and called and finally solved issues and concern to my pain and suffering the accusations and procedures of handling this situation as I felt very violated by them. after I asked to send it in to be examined and to at least get a replacement it was like pulling teeth because that would mean admitting to phones fault. as by prior advisor stating that because it says it will get hot and not to put in pocket they ant liable I then stated so place a consumer alert on safety to all americans who own phone that if you leave phone in pocket it may burn you and or kill you because it will over heat and eventually melt your pocket and skin. He got all upset and we had it out and he started to yell and I emphasized my pain and burns as Im a victim regardless this product clearly burned me and I want some answers. I stated I have medical as he tells me they take care of it. but I was like its ok I just want a person of authority to help me understand situation and some sort of case number and he’s like fine ill send in email. (I’m referring in this the first advisor) Im now on my third as she is now on a grievance and a finally exchange of product. Handled in which very very poorly as it was cautionary to admit to fault. was they can’t deny it any longer I have sent phone in with pics and case numbers and now a small grievance to pick a product from a list in mind. I was more concern to get an apology from a person of his ranking because I was turned into a scrutinized individual who has every apple product made. I wasn’t too concerned with gift or anything. my integrity and self value was brought to a level of trash. I explained I recommended reporting phones to this agency and if they haven’t I am now very concerned because i haven’t heard of any report of battery or phones overheating to point of harming a person to almost or did do third degree burns. on hip. as it bleed and oozed large blisters several times and stung like and felt like a jellyfish for a week! and itched like crazy for another 3 weeks. Im now so over this ordeal and there are still scares from it. as the burns looked horrible after they all formed I have pics Id like to share. and much evidence of case numbers and trust me hours and hours and hours of phone calls and waste of my time with also several iOS issues with passcode and update screwing up my devices for days. this was a complete nightmare! I still have this lady calling to see what I want and I’m thinking as soon as i except they’ll have me sign some discloser or something. I told her but Im like I don’t feel right it was so time consuming and so degrading can’t I get a call from a general manager or a top associate to apologize I understand about liability but clearly this device burned me. it is a harmful product and I haven’t reported it because thats not my style. Im now so over it Im just want to voice my concern and vent. this is worst experience from apple ever. and I love there products and will continue to buy them. I just think there service had started to decline. and updates seem to screw up devices and I just hope this report wakes them up and realize everyone matters. I live usually with no concern but I feel lately with all this stress suddenly produced over this is the most harmful. I can’t believe the way this company handled my situation like I said i went from injured victim to mentally injured victim for voicing my pain and concern. I honestly never want to have to call this company ever again. such a shame they make me ask for a grievance and don’t want to admit to a year old phones in perfect conditions fault. its the terms and regulations and that I left in pocket. I was like what everyone leaves and or puts in pocket. and I also stated that Im sure that everyone who owns a phone has at least slept with it in pocket before once before.!

The product, in the report: IPone 6, serial: c7jnm93rg5mn, Apple case number: 100115672924
I purchased an lphone6 new about two years ago. Over the weekend of January 14, 20171 was using my I phone 6 telephone when it got very hot. It had done that in the past but the phone continued to work. Around Sunday January 15, 2017 I was out to dinner and I was looking at my phone when I noticed that the frame on the left side of the phone as you view it from the front was bulged out. Closer examination showed the left side was bowed out enough that I could see some of the inner metal parts of the phone. The phone continued to worked. I looked up information on this model phone and I saw this was a common problem for this model phone. Yesterday, January 17, 2017 I contacted Apple Inc.; spoke with a senior advisor and described the condition of the phone. He instructed me to turn the phone off and not use it. He asked me if I had received any injuries and I told him I did not. An appointment was set up for me to visit the local Apple store and have one of their techs look at it. The senior tech I talked to said it sounded as if the battery had overheated, swelled up and bent the frame on that side. The tech at Apple who examined my telephone confirmed the battery had swollen up and damaged the telephone. The tech said they would replace my phone with one like it for the price of the replacement battery which was$ 79.00 plus tax. In my research I found this was a common problem with the lphone6 and 6s. Other companies have had incidents with the rechargeable batteries used in hover boards etc. and they were forced to issue a recall. I am now wondering why they have not been investigated and this problem addressed by your agency.

The product, in the report: IPhone 6 and wall charger
While charging an IPhone 6 with the original OEM ‘wall charger’ a thermal event occurred. The wall charger was plugged into small extension cord which was then laying across a pillow. The phone was being used while it was being charged. Apple wall charger became so hot it left a small charring mark on the pillow case. In addition, the plastic case of the wall charger itself partially melted and sustained some dark charring. Had the overheating not been noticed it may have caused a fire.

The product, in the report: Iphone 7 Plus Black - 256GB - PHONE
Phone caught on fire.
Purchased a new Apple iPhone 7 Plus last week. It is brand new and the largest capacity one sold 256gb.
Iphone 7 on second day was plugged in charging in the kitchen and caught on fire. Luckily my wife was there and was able to put it out. The fire burned the cord and scorched the phone and counter.
I am very concerned that this is a defective model since I fly internationally every month to China and Europe from the USA and this could be a major issue on an airplane. Additionally, a simple google search showed that this is starting to happen to quite a few of these phones. I searched “iphone 7 fire” and read dozens of articles about these phones exploding and causing major damage.
Please tell me what I should do with this phone. I have not been able to get through to Apple as they keep putting me on hold or transferring me.

This caller is reporting camera case cover that easily fits over the back of the iphone to transform to a camera however when she tried to separate the two pieces that accomplish this concept the button that releases the lock for the two pieces to be able to successfully encase the iphone is spring loaded. The button flew off of the cover with such force and hit the consumer on her glasses. She states that she does not normally wear glasses but is very thankful that she was this day because otherwise the button would have hit her in her eye instead. She is reporting this product as a severe eye injury hazard There were no injuries to be reported with this incident The consumer has tried to contact the manufacturer with two separate emails and four phone calls but they have not responded to any attempts.

The product, in the report: Issue relates to iPhone 7 in matte black with 128 GB of memory. It has a built-in 1960 mAh rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery that charges via an ‘Apple’ Flash cable (included with purchase). The phone is used for web applications, such as internet browsing, work, email, music player, photography/video and phone calls.
I purchased an Apple iPhone 7 in brushed black on September 27th 2016 (Model # MN9H2LL/A) using AT&T as the carrier. I activated the phone soon after receiving it; approximately October 1st. Within the first week, the phone while not in use, became extremely hot to the touch. The phone temporarily stopped working, most likely due to an internal sensor to preserve itself. The issue has only occurred once where it has become too hot to touch, but has gotten hot multiple times during use and without. I have notified Apple Customer Service of the issue as it may have related to another problem I’m having with the phone. They have not given me any additional information pertaining to the overheating issue other than it has been logged on their end. I have reviewed online information pertaining to [REDACTED] recall due to the risk of explosion. Though I have yet to hear any stories similar to that pertaining to the iPhone 7 and 7+, based on my experience with this phone and reading similar complaints online, I believe it may be a danger if they have comparable battery manufacturers or type of internal battery.

Approximately fifteen seconds later he felt a burning sensation where the phone was placed and immediately lay on his side so as to remove the phone from him. The consumer has been applying ointment to his burn as it has not completely healed.
The consumer contacted the manufacturer and explained the situation. The representative he spoke to informed him that they were not responsible for what happened to him.
The consumer indicates his phone never worked after the incident and when he took it to an Apple store he was informed that the phone had burned out and that the damage was permanent.
The consumer plans on keeping the unit for at least the next thirty days in case an investigation ensues.

The product, in the report: Apple I=Phone 5
July 13, 2016 Dear Sir, I am the owner of an Apple I-phone 5 which I purchased new approximately 3.5 years ago. It has been well taken care of and only attached to Apple connectors. Recently I noticed the screen had separated from the unit on the left side. On July 12, 2016 I took it to an Apple Store and was informed that the lithium battery had a heat anomaly and that caused the screen to lift up. I was informed that I could purchase a new Apple 5 phone for approximately $270. I declined that offer. Being concerned that this battery problem (similar to hover boards, laptops, etc.) could cause a fire in my pocket or elsewhere (car, home, etc.), I contacted Apple support on July 13, 2016 to see if this was a safety hazard. If a safety issue, I would expect Apple to correct the situation gratis as consumer safety should be a top priority. The Apple representative, [REDACTED], after again suggesting I purchase a new Apple 5 for $270 informed me that I could have the battery replaced for $80. However I was advised NOT TO USE THE PHONE!!!!. (See correspondence below) This is a dichotomy. Either a safety issue exists or it does not. If a safety issue exists, Apple should immediately correct the problem without charge. If no problem exists, I should be able to use the mobile phone. Since something happened with the lithium battery, I am making you aware of a potential safety issue with the I-phone 5. I am aware that others have had similar battery problems with the I-phone 5 and Apple extended their normal year warrantee. However there are many other Apple 5 phones in customer’s possession that Apple indicates are not under warrantee but are, in my opinion, a safety concern. Thank you very much. [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: Cell Phone
The Apple iPhone 5 series cell phones are using a lithium ion battery that are starting to fail. The batteries swell to sizes large enough to actually separate the glass cover from it’s case. When I raised the concern to Apple they offered to replace the phone for the cost of the battery. This seem to bring my awareness level as they know there’s an issue, but not willing to accept the responsibility for the design and parts used during fabrication. The Apple employee also stated that they would not just simply change the battery due to possible “ thermal event”. This even raised my concern level even higher. With all the problems with batteries and fires during recent months, I believe if they are willing to replace the cell phone for a third of the cost, either their profit margin is extremely high on their products or they are fully aware of this issue and are not willing to replace these batteries until something tragic happens.

The product, in the report: Apple iPhone 5
Recently I have been having issues with my Apple iPhone 5, so i took it in to a nearby Apple store where a tech had diagnosed the issues stemming from a defect known as a swollen battery. She told me that the phone could not be repaired since they had been instructed not to take apart any phones with a swollen battery because of the risk of them exploding and causing harm to the technician, and that my only resolution was to replace the phone. I chose to do a little research into the issue myself before replacing the phone, which is when I discovered the issue has been pretty regular in the iPhone 5. In some cases individuals were left with burns and other injuries when the phones exploded in their pockets or leaked battery acid on them. I then took the phone to another Apple store where there, once again, the issue was confirmed to be a swollen battery, and she urged me to replace the phone because of the dangers it posed.
I have to say that i am deeply concerned about this issue because my entire family uses these phones, including my 1 year old son who occasionally watches cartoons on the phone(s). In my research I had come across several instances where apple had recalled other products because of a swollen battery defect, yet the iPhone 5 was never recalled. It was obvious that Apple was aware of the issue since it had instructed its employees not to disassemble the phones because it was dangerous. So why are they not recalling the phones to protect the users? I am desperately searching for a resolution to this issue because I have several family members who are having similar symptoms with their iPhone 5’s, and I would not like to see them get hurt.

My story is similar to those I have read on this website. I had decided to use my Iphone 3gs after awhile. I noticed that the battery life was significantly lower, sometimes turning off at 50%. When I charged the battery, I noticed that the case on the back of the phone was beginning to bulge, and has now cracked the back of the phone in two spots. The battery is clearly expanding inside the unit. Although the unit still works, I imagine that continuing to use this product could pose a potential safety risk to the user(s). Perhaps a defective product should be replaced with a newer, safer working model.

Applie iPhone 3gs 16gb was stored on a shelf, powered off for approximately six months. Discovered this day Sept 29.2015 that the phone had expanded, severely distorting the back cover and separating the screen from the phone along the edges. The phone is destroyed. I believe this is due to a battery fault based on other reports involving 3gs phones. The fact that this happens when the phone is powered off, unattended and assuming the outgassing of the battery is caused by a heat condition, means that many consumers have small, dangerous possible sources of fire sitting in their desk drawers.

The next morning @ about 6:30 I went to pick up the phone from my desk (I use it at work, as well) and noted that the screen had separated from the casing - more at the top of the screen than any other part, but over 3/4 of the screen was obviously separated.

I shall be returning the device to the store tomorrow to report the fault and demand a replacement. I consider this is a risk of thermal runaway and therefore a safety risk

The product, in the report: Apple Iphone 3GS
I haven’t used my iphone 3gs in awhile and had it in my drawer. I tried to use it this morning and noticed that the display assy has popped out. Upon further checking the battery has swollen so bad that it pushed on the main board and displaced the front display assembly.
I called Apple support and they told me that since the product is out of warranty, there is nothing they can do. I request to help me dispose of the battery since it looks pretty bad and i was concerned of an explosion. Again, they said it is no longer their problem since I am out of warranty. Advise me to take it to Walmart instead of the Apple store. I told them I will take it to the Apple store instead.

The product, in the report: Apple iPhone 3GS 16GB Black Model #: A1303 Serial #: 86928YS53NP
I have owned my iPhone 3GS (16GB) for over 3 years now, and purchased it from its previous owner in pristine condition. It served me very well during that time, and always had great battery life. 3 months ago, I purchased a brand new iPhone 6 (64GB), at which time I stopped using my 3GS regularly. It sat in my desk drawer, until I brought it out last week to use as an iPod. Upon charging it up, it behaved erratically, and would randomly reboot. After leaving it for a number of days, my friend and I came back to find the casing had split open, and the battery had ballooned an alarming amount. The battery expanded so far that it split the main motherboard, and has broken several ribbon cables. As of now, even with a battery replacement, my phone is completely unusable. The SIM card tray was snapped when the screen assembly and main board separated from the back casing, but I have taken pictures to show this, as well as the Serial # and IMEI # for reference.
I completely understand that my phone is well outside of the warranty period; that is not the issue I am addressing here, as I do not expect Apple to replace the product due to a failure. However, I do believe that this is a legitimate safety concern, and that there needs to be an effort on the part of the OEM (Apple Inc.) to provide consumers with warnings and instructions on what to do in this matter.
I have researched the issue, and there are countless cases of this exact issue happening. In most cases when the consumer has contacted Apple regarding the issue, the official response has been that “the batteries are only designed to last approximately 2 years, at which point they will do that for safety reasons”. If this is truly the case, then not only does that need to be documented with the product, informing the consumer of this when the product is originally purchased, but there also needs to be material giving direction on proper disposal of the product when this occurs, if they are in fact admitting to this issue.
