  1. No incident, no one hurt

Made Aug 4, 2013, sent to the company Aug 12, 2013, published by CPSC Aug 26, 2013

The product, in the report: XXX brand 14 gauge speaker wire

Purchased a 100’ package of 14gauge speaker wire as shown http://www.3kings.com/p-2389-xxx-brx14100-14-ga-100-bag-high-quality-economy-speaker-cable-14-gauge.aspx

When stripping the insulation off at the end of the cable to install it, I discovered it was approximately 19 gauge wire (which is non-standard size). Product was made in China.

The http://www.3kings.com/ web site sells several size packages/spools of this product and it is further distributed for them by Amazon.com.

At the http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009XULXBS/ref=s9_psimh_gw_p23_d0_i1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=13M1PV6DREF1VM4KXSX7&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=1389517282&pf_rd_i=507846 site, several people who have also purchased this product have had the same experience as indicated by their feedback left under the product review area.

UPDATE FROM CONSUMER: Undersized wiring labeled as much heavier gauge wiring can be used in applications where the thickness of the wiring is critical to avoid overheating. The approximately 19 gauge wire reported in the attached report, labeled as 14 gauge wire could be used in application passing as much as 15 amperes, which would melt the conductors. Since speaker wire is essentially the same as two-conductor lamp cord, it can be used interchangeably by home owners to repair electrical appliances causing them to overheat and cause fires, electrical shorts and shocks.
