No one hurt Made Feb 3, 2022, sent to the company Feb 10, 2022, published by CPSC Feb 25, 2022
The product, in the report: Tzumi ProBuds V2 True Wireless Earbuds (White) with charging case and cable
On more than one occasion, but most recently, the 2nd of February, the silicone tips on the Tzumi ProBuds V2 wireless earbuds have become stuck in my ear canal after removal of the earbud from my ear.
The earbuds (purchased from Walmart, though I believe they’re sold at [REDACTED] stores as well) come with three sizes of silicone tips, fitted in the package with the standard medium size. After having the medium silicone tips twice get lodged a couple centimeters inside my ear (requiring the use of tweezers to retrieve them, after about a half an hour of trying), I switched to the largest size. This prevents them from getting so far inside my ear, but it is still possible for them to move and become stuck.
The lip around the speaker of the earbud is insufficient to hold onto the silicone piece and the slightest force knocks it loose. For people using these earbuds, especially the medium and small sized silicones, it is not at all difficult for these tips to become loose in the ear canal and get stuck, potentially prompting a hospital visit for removal - it’s almost come to that for me, more than once.
These are cheap earbuds, so I don’t expect perfection, but I believe this is a valid hazard that people should be made aware of. I own a set of equally priced wired earbuds with a strong retention mechanism - a sort of rubber sleeve the fits snugly around the stem where the speaker is. I think this kind of design is necessary for a safe product that is placed inside your ear.
