The product, in the report: Onkyo TX-NR747 175-Watt 7.2-Channel Network A/V Receiver with Wi-Fi & Bluetooth (Black)
I purchased an Onkyo TX NR717 audio/video receiver new in Nov 2013. Several months ago the unit started having problems powering up, displaying video, etc. Then about 2 months ago I was in my living room, smelled a burning electrical smell, and saw sparks shooting out of the top of the unit’s cabinet. Fortunately I was able to quickly unplug the unit before it started a fire. If I was not home I believe the unit could have started a fire which could have damaged or destroyed my home.

The product, in the report: Onkyo Stereo Receiver Model TX-NR809
The product is an Onkyo stereo receiver model # TX-NR 809 which is a new model that I purchased in October 2011. In January, while using the receiver to listen to music, I heard a loud pop and a bright flame could be seen running from left to right under the receiver. There was also a loud burning noise that sounded like a loud gun powder fuse burning. I quickly ran to the unit and unplugged it and smoke was coming out of the unit. I did some internet research and apparently this is not an isolated incident. (Besides the dates, this paragraph was copied from another user of this site, the exact same thing happened to me, my only difference is I was only running in STEREO mode where two speakers and a woofer were being used and not my complete 5.1 system that I could have been using)
I have contacted Onkyo, and they refuse to ship my unit to a service center, or send me a new unit as a replacement. Considering this is NOT an isolated incident, they should not have the right to charge the customer for this service.

The product, in the report: Onkyo Stereo Receiver Model TX-NR809
The product is an Onkyo stereo receiver model # TX-NR 809 which is a new model that I purchased in August. In November, while using the receiver to listen to music, I heard a loud pop and a bright flame could be seen running from left to right under the receiver. There was also a loud burning noise that sounded like a loud gun powder fuse burning. I quickly ran to the unit and unplugged it and smoke was coming out of the unit. I have notified Onkyo of the problem and they will not refund my money and say they will fix it but I don’t want a fire hazard in my home, nor anyone elses.
Here is a copy of the review in which this same thing happened to another consumer:
REVIEW ON AMAZON.COM of the Onkyo TX-NR 809. The link to this review is above.
12 of 15 people found the following review helpful: Onkyo TX-NR809 : Second Replacement, October 9, 2011 By BishopAmazon Verified Purchase(What’s this?) This review is from: Onkyo TX-NR809 THX Certified 7.2-Channel Network A/V Receiver (Black) (Electronics) Received the first one and hooked up all the connections and everything video\sound ran fine over the course of a week. This Friday I had some spare time and decided to apply the updated firmware and that went without issue, played well thereafter. Later in the day I unraveled the MIC and decided to calibrate the speakers, went through setup process and it detected no left side speakers? Odd in that they all had been working before the calibration for a week. Unplugged the MIC and restarted the receiver via ON\OFF and it shot sparks out the top of the receiver with a resounding pop. Uhg, called the customer service with Amazon and they shipped me out a replacement. Unpacked the new one and plugged in the HDMI connection to the LED\LCD TV and powered on. Received message “check speaker connection”. Ok , thinking maybe must connect speakers for operation first. I connect speakers, same ones that worked all last week etc, received “check speaker connection” response again, then receiver automatically shuts down. Proceed to read the manual; try factory reset with VCR\DVD button and standby button pressed at the same time as advised. Guess what, SMOKE rolled out the top of the receiver!! Two receivers and both smoked out the top under normal functions. I love what the ONKYO NR-809 has to offer, I personally think it is the best performance\features\price for my money but there seems to be some quality issues, not to mention the feeling you get when you see smoke roll out the top of a piece of electronics. If not for the great customer service from Amazon I would be in a heck of a mess packing these things up and sending off for service work. I like the receiver so much I am contemplating trying a third but I doubt I will ever feel confident in its durability\quality. Open to suggestions at this pont.
