The product, in the report: HMDX portable bluetooth wireless speaker. Model Number HXP730GY under brand name of “Jam” and it is gray. A picture and description can be seen here: [REDACTED]
My incident concerns a portable wireless bluetooth speaker manufactured by HMDX that melted and had a small fire that resulted in smoke coming out of a students locker at Northmont Middle School in Clayton, Ohio. We received a general fire alarm when a teacher saw smoke coming from the locker and pulled the fire alarm. School was evacuated prior to FD arrival. The SRO officer was on the premises and he pulled the backpack from the locker and put it out with a fire extinguisher that was directly across the hall mounted in a fire box. This speaker was in a students locker and no charging cord was in use. The speaker was powered off but the internal battery caused the small fire and black smoke. When fire department arrived the speaker was laying on the floor all smoldering was out due to SRO using extinguisher. There were no injuries due to quick evacuation of the school. Fire department made certain the speaker was completely extinguished and took possession of the speaker with the middle school principle and SRO’s permission in order to further investigate and report to CPSC. Pictures were obtained documenting the scene prior to removal.
