The product, in the report: Init NT-MG-302 56” TV Stand with 3 glass shelves

The bottom shelf of our Init TV stand shattered catastrophically for no apparent reason, spreading broken glass all over the room. There was no one in the room when it happened, nothing had been added to the shelf for several months, so there was no increase in the weight load it was bearing. Nothing strange was going on at all.

The product, in the report: TV stand with three tempered glass shelves. The bottom shelf is what exploded. The company name is Init and the model # is NT-MG1158. This is the web site for the exact model purchased: http://www.initproducts.com/pc-494-6-init-tv-stand-for-flat-panel-tvs-up-to-60.aspx

The lower glass shelf on my TV stand exploded for no reason. It is made of tempered glass. The model number is NT-MG1158 and the company name is Init. I came home from work and found the breaking glass had set off the sound sensors on my alarm system. The sheriff came out earlier when the alarm went off and left a note that the house was secure but could see the broken glass from the stand.

There was nothing on this particular shelf. Moreover, there is no direct sunlight or any other heat/cool source that would affect the glass. The house is kept at the same temperature 75*. It literally exploded all by itself. Glass was found up to 30 feet away from the TV stand. If anyone was near this when it happened there would have been injuries for sure. If a cat or dog was nearby the injuries would have been very serious. If the glass broke that supported the plasma TV the results would have been much much worse.

After searching the web I found that such incidents involving tempered glass in TV stands is not uncommon, and when it does happen the result is violent. I think this is a safety hazard which should be brought to the attention of consumers.

The product, in the report: A three shelf TV stand with a metal frame and three tempered glass shelves.

We bought a TV stand from Bestbuy in Feburary of 2010. The brand we bought was Init model # NT-C1140B. We bought this stand because we had a console TV that was heavy and weighed 180 pounds and this stand was rated to hold a TV up to 300 pounds. Everything was fine for two years until the night of 08-13 at 1am. I was downstairs in another room when I heard a large boom, similar to a gunshot. I had no idea what it was, until I walked into my living room and saw glass shattered all over the living room. The tv stands has three shelves all tempered glass, the shelf that shattered was the bottom shelf that was holding my stereo and my dvd player, neither of them weighing very much. The shelf holding the TV did not shatter just the bottom shelf. I could only imagine if I had been in the room or my baby and her getting glass shrapnel in her face. This could of been a much more serious situation and I felt compelled to report this unsafe product.
