No incident, no one hurt Made Apr 21, 2026, sent to the company Apr 24, 2026, published by CPSC May 8, 2026
The product, in the report: Product Name: 2026 Velotric Discover M Type: Mid-Drive Electric Bicycle (Class 2 / Class 3 E-bike) Color: Platinum Silver Size: Large Estimated Weight: Approximately 66 lbs Key Components: Equipped with a mid-drive VeloCore motor and Tektro hydraulic disc brakes on both the front and rear wheels. Purpose & Usage: This product is designed and marketed as an urban commuter e-bike. It is used daily for high-traffic city commuting in Manhattan and is equipped to carry a child passenger using a rear-mounted child seat.
What happened that made you want to report? I am reporting a catastrophic structural failure and systemic factory assembly defect on a new electric bicycle purchased less than a month ago. While riding, the primary rear braking system completely failed. All six mounting bolts for the rear disc brake rotor detached or sheared simultaneously, resulting in a total loss of rear braking power and motor control. Upon inspection, the aluminum rear hub flange had fractured, with at least one bolt eyelet snapped off entirely. Additionally, inspecting the front wheel revealed that the factory-applied white witness marks (torque stripes) on the front rotor bolts had already drifted significantly. This proves the front bolts are actively backing out as well, indicating a severe factory-level failure to properly torque or apply thread-locker to critical braking systems.
What type of product(s) were being used? A 2026 Velotric Discover M, which is a mid-drive Class 1/2/3 electric bicycle.
Who was using the product(s)? I was operating the bicycle. I am a 40-year-old male.
How were the product(s) being used? I was using the e-bike for my daily urban commute in high-traffic city streets in Manhattan, traveling at approximately 20mph. This bicycle is also heavily relied upon to transport my young child on a rear-mounted child seat.
Were there any injuries that happened or may have happened while using the product? Fortunately, no injuries occurred during this specific incident. However, there was a critical, life-threatening risk of severe injury to both myself and my child passengers.
How did any injuries occur? While no injuries occurred, a severe crash was narrowly avoided. If the detached rear rotor had jammed against the frame at that speed, it would have instantly locked the rear wheel in heavy traffic. Furthermore, because the factory assembly defect also affects the front brake bolts, an imminent failure of the front rotor would likely lock the front fork, instantly ejecting the rider and any passenger over the handlebars.
