  1. Emergency room

Made Jun 6, 2025, sent to the company Jun 11, 2025, published by CPSC Jun 26, 2025

The product, in the report: Tern HSD p5i LR GEN 2 cargo e-bike. Blue-Green silver. Approximately 60-70 lbs. internal gear hub. Bosch Belt drive. Folding handlebar stem for transport/storage. [REDACTED] child seat mounted to cargo rack.

    TERN HSD p5i Cargo eBike

I had my kid on the back in a [REDACTED] seat plus a small cargo container that had some groceries in it. On a street (not bike lane) we were turning right into a slight uphill, going maybe 5-10 mph. I stood up for more leverage on the pedals and my knee just barely grazed the red safety button on the handlebar stem folding lever, sliding it up, the lever disengaged and the handlebar stem folded towards me. Lost all steering control mid-turn. I laid the bike down and tried to cradle it so my child didnt slam into the ground. Thankfully they dont have a scratch on them.

I sustained a tibial plateau fracture and a hairline fracture of the proximal end of my fibula. I was non-weight on [REDACTED] bearing for 6 weeks, followed by 4 weeks of strength training and physical therapy. If the fracture was any worse (more displaced) I would have had open knee surgery; fixed reduction with retained hardware and a 3-6 month recovery.
