The product, in the report: E bike
CPSC Safety Report: Philodo Jumbo E-Bike Product Information: Brand: Philodo Model: Jumbo (Dual Battery/Dual Motor) Serial Number: [Insert Serial Number if you have it] Mileage at Failure: Less than 100 miles Description of the Hazard: The product suffers from a severe electrical malfunction involving “Unintended Acceleration” and a failure of the power-cutoff system. Despite the display being switched OFF and the screen being black, the bikes electrical system remains “live.” The throttle, horn, and lights continue to function while the bike is supposedly powered down. This creates a “Ghost Power” scenario where the motor can engage without the rider’s knowledge that the system is active. Additionally, the front motor has experienced a catastrophic internal failure (Error Code 14), causing the hub to seize and preventing the bike from being moved in reverse. Description of the Incident & Injury: The incident occurred while I was performing routine maintenance (adjusting the chain and gears) at a campsite. I had physically switched the bike’s display to the OFF position to ensure the motor would not engage. While my hands were near the drivetrain, the motor suddenly engaged. Because the “Ghost Power” defect kept the throttle active despite the bike being switched off, my fingers were caught and pinched by the moving components. This injury was a direct result of the product failing to kill power to the motor when the ignition/display was turned off. Manufacturer Response: The manufacturer (Philodo) was contacted regarding this safety defect. They acknowledged the issue, with their technician stating the “ignition switch” in the display was likely faulty. However, the company has been dismissive of the safety risk and the resulting injury. They refused a warranty repair and instead offered a minor discount coupon toward the purchase of a new bike. They have shown a total lack of “Duty of Care” regarding a documented life-safety hazard in a vehicle with less than 100 miles of use. Desired Outcome: A formal investigation into the Philodo Jumbo electrical system and a potential mandatory recall to prevent further injuries or “runaway bike” accidents for other consumers.
