The product, in the report: EKX T1 electric bicycle, also called an e-bike. Adult electric bicycle with a rear hub motor driven through a 9-pin connector, a throttle, an LCD display presenting fault codes and parameter settings labeled P-00 through P-20, and brake levers with brake-cutoff sensors that disable motor power when a brake is applied. It shipped approximately three-quarters assembled. The front wheel and brackets required buyer assembly. No instruction manual, assembly instructions, warranty documentation, or manufacturer contact information were included in the box. Purchased new online in November 2024 for 854.09 US dollars.
I am reporting an electric bicycle (e-bike) that developed a brake and drive-system failure and was sold with no safety or operating documentation.
PRODUCT: EKX T1 electric bicycle, purchased new from an online retailer in November 2024.
WHO WAS USING IT: I am the owner and sole rider, an adult.
HOW IT WAS USED: Normal recreational and commuting riding on paved streets and paths. No off-road jumping. No modifications other than the attempted repair described below.
WHAT HAPPENED:
1. The rear brake stopped fully disengaging. Because the brake-cutoff circuit remained engaged, the throttle would not engage. A rear brake that does not fully release on a motorized bicycle causes brake drag, heat buildup, and unpredictable stopping behavior. I purchased and installed replacement brake levers to try to correct it. The condition persisted.
2. The rear hub-motor 9-pin connector, the controller, and the display all failed. The bicycle has been inoperable since approximately mid-2025.
3. The bicycle shipped with no instruction manual, no assembly instructions, no warranty documentation, and no manufacturer contact information. It arrived roughly three-quarters assembled. The display presents fault codes and parameter settings ranging from P-00 to P-20. Without a manual I had no way to interpret fault codes, verify speed limiting, or confirm safe operating parameters.
INJURIES: None occurred. The bicycle became inoperable before the brake condition caused a crash. The hazard is that a brake that does not fully release, combined with an unreadable fault-code system and no operating manual, could cause loss of control at speed.
OTHER OWNERS OF THE SAME MODEL REPORT THE SAME PROBLEMS. Two archived public discussions:
[REDACTED] (posted May 30, 2024) - multiple EKX T1 owners report receiving the bike with no instruction manual and no build instructions in the box, report error codes, and report no response from the company. Owners emailed the manual to one another because no official source existed.
[REDACTED] (posted October 25, 2024) - an EKX T1 owner reports a rear-drive clutch failure. The manufacturer shipped a replacement clutch whose shaft was warped, requiring a complete motor assembly. The same owner reports the manufacturer’s U.S. website was offline because the hosting bill was unpaid, and that his open warranty case went unanswered for 23 days.
MANUFACTURER AVAILABILITY: The manufacturer’s U.S. website was publicly reported offline for non-payment approximately two weeks before I purchased this bicycle. No manufacturer contact information was supplied with the product. To reach anyone connected to the brand I was eventually routed to an unrelated third-party seller. There is no functioning channel through which owners of this model could be notified of a defect or a recall.
I still have the bicycle.
