The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

  1. Hurt, no treatment

Made Sep 2, 2026, sent to the company Sep 4, 2026, published by CPSC Sep 21, 2026

The product, in the report: Concord 27.5” Step-Thru Electric Bike, 36V, Class 2, Aluminum, White

I was riding this Concord 27.5” step-thru electric bicycle on a flat, dry, paved road under normal conditions. I applied the front brake with normal, moderate lever pressure for a routine stop. I was not braking hard and was not attempting a sudden stop.

The front wheel locked. I was thrown forward over the handlebars onto the pavement.

I am not able to say what happened mechanically, and I am not going to guess at it. What I can report is what I did and what I found when I got up:

    - I applied normal brake pressure and the front wheel locked. - The front fork legs are splayed apart. - The front brake caliper is completely detached and is no longer in position on the rotor. - The front brake rotor is warped. - The front rim and tire are undamaged.

I would ask that the sequence be established by inspection rather than by my assumption. I would note only that going over the handlebars does not normally splay a fork apart.

I sustained a badly sprained toe, a right arm that was immobile for approximately two days, and abrasions to my knee and inner leg. I did not require emergency treatment. The bicycle is a total loss and cannot be safely returned to service.

The bicycle was approximately five and a half months old. It had been ridden only on paved roads, had never been crashed or modified, and had shown no prior braking problems. The braking system is a mechanical disc brake, front and rear.

I purchased this bicycle already assembled by Walmart. I did not assemble it and have never adjusted or serviced the brakes.

I have preserved the bicycle in its post-crash condition, without any repair or disassembly, so the front brake caliper, rotor, and caliper mounting hardware can be inspected in the failed state.

I am reporting this because a front brake that locks the wheel completely under normal, moderate lever pressure presents a serious crash and injury hazard, and because comparable mechanical disc brake caliper failures on other e-bike brands have resulted in formal recalls.

The product, in the report: Concord 20” Urbanfold Electric Folding Bike, 36V, Class 2, Blue, Fits Riders 4’11” - 6’2”, Adult, Unisex {THIS IS WALMARTS WEBSITE EXACT BIKE DETAILS)

Walmart’s electric folding bike by Concord. You can fold bike when not using for easy storage or hanging storage. the bike has a simple swinging latch that keeps the bike from folding. it will come up and open on its own when riding causing major body injuries to user when riding. I paid for one at [REDACTED], Fl and was riding it back to my house that first week of purchase. I was riding as max speed of like 21 mph and bike suddenly folding and falling to the right and flipped with me on it. real nasty crash with passing cars missing me by couple of feet. i notice the latch must of work it way up . there is nothing stopping it from doing this. i am suffering major back injury including fracture spine and knee injuries putting me out of work for who knows. i can barely walk or stand or wipe my butt. i have pictures of damage bike after accident, and [REDACTED]Regional Hospital reports and record of injuries of my L1 and L2 fracturs to my spine Which is the worst i suffered but not only badly harm. It would by nice for $$ to pay my bills but is not why i report this. I am worried for others especially kids getting injured or worst. NO BS. 100 percent real with many witnesses.

The product, in the report: Walmart Concord Commutr Ebike

Dear NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation,

I am filing a formal safety defect complaint regarding the Concord Commuter e-bike, sold by Walmart, due to a combination of catastrophic wheel failures and critical brake defects that pose an imminent risk of serious injury or death. Despite being made aware of these dangers, Walmarts manufacturer continues to sell this defective product. Defect 1: Wheel Assembly Failure at High Speeds

The rear wheel assembly repeatedly fails after approximately 1500 miles of use.

The spokes start breaking in succession, even after replacements and truing, leading to complete wheel collapse.

I have received five replacement wheels from Walmart, all exhibiting the same defect straight out of the box.

These wheels come untrue from the Chinese factory and fail despite proper installation and maintenance.

This defect is extremely dangerous at speeds of 20+ MPH, where a rear wheel failure can cause the rider to be thrown off the bike, leading to potentially fatal crashes.

I have filed a complaint with the CPSC regarding this issue, yet Walmart continues selling the bike without corrective action.

Defect 2: Unrecoverable Brake Caliper Failure

The brake calipers suffer from a critical failure where, upon the brake cable tightening and pads locking onto the rotor, something inside the caliper fails internally.

This results in a sudden and total loss of braking force, making the bike unrecoverable unless the rider manually adjusts the actuating lever.

This defect can lead to complete loss of control at high speeds, increasing the risk of serious accidents.

I submitted video evidence of this defect to Walmart, proving that their brake system is unreliable and unsafe for consumer use.

Walmarts Response & Ongoing Sale of Defective Bikes

Despite being fully informed of these defects, Walmart and their manufacturer continue selling this product without addressing the serious safety risks.

I have also filed a complaint with the Texas Attorney General, citing their failure to properly address warranty claims under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act after issuing multiple replacements of defective wheels.

The fact that I have received five separate defective wheels proves this is not an isolated incident but rather a systemic defect in manufacturing and quality control.

    Requested Action from NHTSA

Given the risk of severe injury or death due to sudden wheel failure or total brake loss, I urge NHTSA to:

Investigate the safety risks posed by the Concord Commuter e-bike and its defective components.

Issue a recall or mandatory corrective action against Walmart and its manufacturer.

Require Walmart to cease sales of this defective e-bike until a proper safety solution is in place.

    Supporting Evidence

I can provide video proof of brake failures, photos of broken spokes and defective wheels, as well as records of my multiple warranty claims with Walmart. Please contact me if additional documentation is required.

This is a serious consumer safety issue that warrants immediate attention. Thank you for your time and I look forward to your response regarding next steps.

    Sincerely,

    [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: 27.5” Concord Commutr Ebike

This is in regards to the Walmart branded Concord Ebike sold in 1000 Walmart stores and online through Walmart.com. For the last four months I have been back and forth with Phoenix Bicycles, the Chinese manufacturer of the Walmart product. When I discovered that inside the wheel rim was metal shavings left from the wheel drilling for the spokes. I have emails from Phoenix Bicycles who admit they know of this problem. This is a major safety issue on a bicycle that is electrically powered and can go 20 miles and hours. Immediate Full tire pressure loss in the front or rear wheel can cause an serious accident. What is worse is that Phoenix and Walmart know of this and did not report such to the CPSC as required by federal law.
