The product, in the report: The product is a Carbo E-Bike (carbon fiber electric bicycle) that I used for recreational riding and exercise. It is designed for use on paved roads and park roadways and is equipped with an electric motor to assist while riding. At the time of the incident, I was using the bicycle as intended by riding at a low speed on a paved roadway inside Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park. During normal operation, the bicycle seat unexpectedly detached, causing me to lose control and fall. I believe the seat assembly or its attachment mechanism may have failed during ordinary use.
I was riding my carbon fiber electric bicycle at Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park in Naples, Florida, on the roadway between Park Drive and the road leading toward the boat ramp. I regularly ride this bicycle for exercise, usually between 15 and 30 miles, and before this incident it had recently been repaired, including having new tires and brakes installed because of prior issues. On the day of the incident, I was riding at a low speed and coasting when I suddenly felt a bump. At that exact moment, the bicycle seat detached without warning, causing me to lose control and fall immediately to the ground. I also believe that a pothole in the roadway may have contributed to the seat failure. After I fell, the rear wheel of the bicycle ran over my right leg. I immediately realized my leg was severely injured because it was visibly deformed. I remained on the ground trying to stabilize my leg until bystanders came to help me and called 911. I was transported by ambulance to the hospital for emergency treatment. As a result of the incident, I suffered severe injuries, including a fractured tibia and a complete fracture of my femur. I underwent emergency surgery where two titanium rods were implanted in my leg, and screws were placed in my ankle to stabilize it. I remained hospitalized for about ten days before being transferred to an inpatient rehabilitation facility. I am currently unable to bear weight on my right leg, require a wheelchair and walker to get around, and continue to receive physical therapy at home. I am reporting this incident because I believe it may have been caused by a defect involving the bicycle seat.
