Hurt, no treatment Made Mar 2, 2026, sent to the company Mar 5, 2026, published by CPSC Mar 19, 2026
The product, in the report: White Aventon Pace 500.2 Large Step Through Model and White Aventon Pace 500.3 Large step through model
Product Information:
Product Type: Electric Bicycle (e-bike)
Manufacturer: Ride Aventon, Inc.
Brand/Model: Pace 500.2 and Pace 500.3
Incident Description: This report concerns a recurring, catastrophic electrical failure involving the battery-to-frame terminal connection on Aventon Pace 500 series e-bikes.
In late 2023, my Pace 500.2 suffered a thermal event where the battery terminals melted and fused the battery to the frame. The manufacturer replaced the unit with a Pace 500.3 in January 2024. In December 2025, with fewer than 800 miles of use, the replacement unit suffered the exact same failure.
The electrical terminals reached temperatures high enough to melt high-density plastic and weld metal components together while the bike was in operation. This occurred during normal use and was not preceded by any impact or improper handling. This is a systemic design or manufacturing defect that creates a significant fire and burn hazard.
Key Safety Concerns:
Thermal Runaway Risk: The heat generated at the terminal interface is sufficient to melt the battery casing, posing a direct risk of lithium-ion battery ignition.
Pattern of Defect: This failure has occurred on two different model generations (.2 and .3), suggesting the manufacturer has not successfully addressed the underlying electrical resistance issue.
Inability to De-energize: Because the terminals “fuse” together, the battery cannot be removed from the frame in the event of a fire, preventing the user from isolating the fuel source from a home or garage.
Manufacturer Response: Despite acknowledging the “scorching” and melting, Aventon has declined to repair or replace the unit, claiming the original purchase warranty has expired. They have suggested third-party refurbishment at my own expense, despite the recurring nature of this fire hazard.

We purchased a used Aventon Level 1 e-bike from Upway. Within days it began experiencing an error where it would unintentionally accelerate without user input briefly. Occasionally it would show Error 22 (throttle error). We had the throttle replaced at our local bike shop under Upway’s warranty thinking it was a sticky or damaged throttle, but the issue persisted, happening very intermittently. On Oct 16, 2025, I was using this ebike on a public street when it suddenly began accelerating from a standstill and this time did not stop quickly. I quickly dismounted and spent the next moments attempting to keep control of the bike, while it continously accelerated with nothing touching the throttle, going in a circle until I was forced to throw the bike to the ground so I could turn it off. I received scrapes and bruises from the rough handling of the bike, but this could have been much worse -- I could have careened into traffic and been killed or seriously injured.
I reached out to Upway and then Aventon for some resolution and Aventon responded with an overly onerous and aggressive legal agreement to replace the bike and silence any discussion of this incident, including not allowing warranty or claims on the replacement bike.
I also read about a recall for a similar issue on Aventon’s Sinch line of bikes around the same time this bike was manufactured, making me worry that common components could make this issue be more widespread.
