The product, in the report: Polaris RZR 1000 “Trails and Rocks Edition”
This caller is reporting 2017 Polaris RZR 1000 “Trails and Rocks Edition” purchased October 7th, 2017. Place of purchase was Ride Now Rancho, [REDACTED]. (855) 975-5958.
The caller had been riding the first week only a total of around three hours when he noticed that the check engine was on and there were sounds seemingly from the transmission area.
Around October 17th, 2017 the caller took the unit to the dealership asking them check/repair issues. It was returned to him around October 27th, 2017 with no diagnoses and no repair. The unit had only approximately 3 hours on it at this time. He took it home and placed it in his garage until November 3rd, 2017 when he took it out for and estimated 4 hours with no incident. Around November 4th, 2017 the caller had been riding just a bit over an hour when he felt extreme warmth at the back of his head (he was wearing a helmet). He looked into the mirrors and saw flames coming from the rear of the passenger side that were maybe 18 inches. There were none on the driver’s side that he saw. The caller immediately hit the brakes and at that time a loud popping sound came from the Polaris, he was aware that he was going over slight bumps in the road. He said his speed was 35 mph.
He turned off the engine at which time unit tilted to its side as if he were on ice and fell with the passenger door to the ground damaging the door and the roof. He quickly unbelted and jumped off. From the time that he felt heat and saw fire to the time he was able to jump off the unit a possible length of 30 seconds time. He and bystanders were able to extinguish the fire with the abundance of sand around and also to note that the rear passenger drive shaft had broken as was the incoming elbow on the fuel line.
There were no injuries with this incident. He contacted the manufacturer and received case# [REDACTED]. He has retained an attorney; [REDACTED]. He would like it known to CPSC and other consumers is that the manufacturer has no indication as to what caused the fire that they are handing the keys back to consumers as if it is safe to ride. He is reporting the incident as a severe safety, injury and fire hazard
