The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

We have a 2018 Polaris RZR XP4 1000 Turbo EPS which the engine has overheated and the engine has melted. We have only 174 hours on it, 1861 miles. The product, in the report: 2012 Polaris RZR 800 4. Right rear fender melted and burnt. Poor heat shields.

Bought new 2012 Polaris RZR 800 4. Immediately the right rear fender melted with melted and black burned plastic. Reported this to dealer who ordered new fender. New fender melted. Lack of safe and adequate heat shields from engine. Expect plastic to catch fire and burn. Polaris and dealer both said no issues with this model. I own the newer RZR that has been recalled due to fires. The older ones suffer from a far higher risk. The 2012 RZR is dangerous and a catastrophic waiting to happen yet they say it’s safe to drive. On going since 2012.

  5. First aid

Made May 31, 2017, sent to the company Jun 8, 2017, published by CPSC Jun 22, 2017

The product, in the report: 4 seat off road car (Polaris RZR XP4 turbo EPS 2016)

Our family purchased a 2016 Polaris turbo RZR for us to enjoy off road adventures together. Polaris advertised the 2016 RZR as “the worlds most complete high performance side by side. Extreme performance for 4, with no trade offs or compromises. The extended wheel base and exclusive FOX internal bypass shocks work with the industries most advanced side by side suspension to tame the gnarliest terrain you can find”. Since our purchase we’ve been patient with the numerous recalls which have made my wife and I question the Polaris product line. We have an annual family trip to Sand Mountain NV every year to enjoy the dunes, explore the pony express trail as well as numerous ghost towns. This year while riding the dunes in our Polaris RZR we had a suspension component fail. It was a right rear lower radius rod. Ground conditions were steep and sandy. All four of us, myself [REDACTED], my wife [REDACTED] and our kids age 10 and 12 were all in the RZR for a ride. We had rode on and off most of the day, jumping small dunes and riding up and down the large drag hill (comp hill). As the afternoon came to an end we were, what’s referred to as “rain bowing” on the slope of a tall dune. Rain bowing is when a person operates a vehicle up a slope turning in an arc at the top while they still have momentum and drives back down. The path is in the shape of a rainbow when a person looks at the tracks. We had done this maneuver several times driving through the tracks from previous passes at an average speed of 30 m.p.h. The last time we went up I turned our arc to the right at the top of the dune the RZR bouncing up and down through our old tracks as it had done many times prior. However this time I felt the right rear of the vehicle fall below normal ride height as well as a strong drag that slowed the vehicle. As it slowed and leaned more to the right, I knew we were going over. My attempt to steer the front end down the hill was to no avail, the RZR with my entire family in it, rolled all the way over. As the RZR rolled back to the wheels I turned to the right (down hill) and floored the accelerator in hopes to stop the vehicle from rolling more. It moved the front end down the hill but not enough, we rolled over again, and again when the vehicle landed on the wheels I turned right and accelerated. I continued this till the front end of the RZR moved down the hill enough to stop the machine from rolling. It was 5-1/4 rolls before we stopped, on its side, about 1/3 of the way down the hill and I immediately shut the engine off. We asked the kids if they were ok. All of us were stunned, bruised and completely covered with sand. As other riders quickly arrived on site I placed the RZR in park and myself and two other men lifted the RZR back to its wheels. The outer body was wrecked; the roof, doors and two of the wheel I had received for Christmas were destroyed. We contacted Polaris and since we bought a 5-year warranty with this vehicle the service manager has us bring it in to open a warranty claim. Since then Polaris moved it to a safety claim and submitted it to their engineering department. We’ve also been researching the part failure on the internet and have found a lot of other Polaris RZR customers have had the same issue with broken radius rods. While at the dealership and also during my internet research we’ve learned that Polaris has upgraded the part that is breaking on the 2017 models.
