The product, in the report: John Deere XUV 550 2012 Gator. 2 seater UTV.
Three times within the last 12 months, the parking brake cable eyelet snapped in half when using the emergency parking brake on our 550 John Deere Gator. We have had this part replaced 2x with John Deere parts at a certified John Deere service repair shop, but the part continues to fail after just a few months of regular use.

The product, in the report: John Deere Gator 2020 XUV 865R
[REDACTED] That Gator was replaced by a new 2020 865R JD GATOR. It had a new safety brake system. It was changed to a foot pedal with a pull handle release. Within 2 years the ratchet once depressed and set would “de-ratchet” its hold setting. Then the Gator could begin drifting off which soon turned into a fast rolling away. August 26,2022 I found out from a parts dept that John Deere does not sell the ratchet plate that was too thin and too soft of a metal. Instead for $100.00 they sell the entire safety brake ratchet plate assembly, but JD is coming out with a new replacement assembly part. Meanwhile rather than do a RECALL they are going to let owners discover and experience the defect along with face the risk of loss, damages, and injury.

Caller stated that he experienced problems with the UTV. While operating the unit the steering wheel became unstable, he was fortunate that he was in his driveway because if he was out travelling at least 20 mph it would have been fatal.

The product, in the report: This is a John Deere Gator, with a utility bed, that I purchased to use in helping myself to do work around the house
I purchased a John Deere Gator and 3 months after purchase the brakes went out. Then the emergency brake failed. I have taken to the dealer 4 times to be repaired and the same issues keep trearing up again. Each time I am harassed that Its my fault, and I have to pay the dealer to repair a piece of equipment that I consider a lemon. Then, after complaining to no avail, the emergency brake failed again when I had stopped to get out and move a rock out of the road and the unit rolled over me, tearing my knee apart requiring surgery. I am tired of having to deal with the dealer who don’t want to stand behind their product. This unit should have been replaced with another unit but they would not do it. I have suffered a lot of pain because of this John Deere Product and filed numerous complaints and my complaint/case number is:[REDACTED]. It is not right for myself to pay the amount of money I paid for a piece of equipment that is a liability to my life - I could have been killed. John Deere needs to give my money back or replace this unit with one that is NOT A LEMON.
Additionally, the third time the brakes went out, my Son was thrown from the vehicle and cracked his ribs. When the brakes failed an embankment stopped the unit throwing my son over the dashboard and over the hood down o the ground. If there was no embankment the Unit would have continued and he would have been killed.
This is not acceptable.

The product, in the report: Utility vechile 4x4 off road
John Deere XUV 550 utility vehicles are a fire harzard. I bought one in 2014 and with end 3 to 6 months it burst into flames. I witnessed the spontaneous conbustion. This vehicle was sitting idle not running for 5 hours before burning. I am certain the manufacturer was damaging the fuel tank when securing the fuel line with a metal band. I found this when my second XUV that I bought new began missing not running good hard to start and back firing and the smell of gas. The same issues with my first XUV 550. I have been fighting JD. They refuse to accept responsibility. I still have the old gas tank and tip that was damaged. Please advice. Also the state of Illinois has closed my case and suggest I began litigation. Thanks.

The product, in the report: Gator XUV 590i. Utility vehicle crossover.
I purchased a John Deere crossover utility vehicle last July 2017 and have multiple issues with the parking brake and cable. They have admitted that Deere is aware of the issue and did replace it once, however immediately after getting it home the issue still occurred. They have refused to accommodate my request to have it repaired again unless I have it transported to the dealer or have them pick up for over $250 charge. At the time of this filing, we still have no brake on this vehicle which poses a severe safety hazard and the fact that they are aware and have not put out a formal safety recall. I urge some type of action for this company to place a recall for a defective parking brake at their expense and not the consumer.

The product, in the report: green model pr xuv 590i
When the gas was fully pressed the throttle stuck causing my utility vehicle to run into my shed. An electrical connector was lodged between the transmission and the throttle causing it to stick in the full throttle position. The tire, rim and fender on the rear left are damaged as well as damage to my structure. I have pictures of the electrical connector that caused the accident and reproduced the condition at the dealership. The issue was not caused by the dust boot from the previous recall of the product.

The product, in the report: Trail model recreational utility vehicles
The submitter said the unit was repaired sometime in April 2013 under the recall # 13-725 and the repair was conducted by the retailer.
The unit was used for about an hour or two, the submitter said it was only driven a few miles when it backfired. The unit was then turned off and pulled to his friends nearby home. Shortly after they noticed smoke coming from underneath the seat, near the utility bed and when the opened it flames began. The local fire department was contacted and when they arrived at the scene the unit was in flames. The unit was put out and the submitter was given a report which was filed by Chief [REDACTED].
The submitter said he contacted the firm a few days later and spoke with [REDACTED] ([REDACTED]) and sent pictures of the unit (case # [REDACTED]). The submitter was told that the information was reviewed and at this time they could not identify what caused the fire so they would not assist with a refund or replacement. The submitter was also told that if he decided to hire his own fire investigator to examine the unit and got back to them then they would review the information again.
The submitter indicated that the unit has 135 hours.

I HAD JUST ARRIVED ON 5/23/15 TO VISIT MY FRIENDS AND A SHORT TIME THEREAFTER THEIR ADULT DAUGHTER TOOK THIS VEHICLE FOR A DRIVE. SHE WAS NOT GONE MORE THAN 20 MINUTES WHEN WE GOT THE CALL FROM HER THAT THE VEHICLE HAD STARTED ON FIRE UNDER THE SEAT AND BECAME TOTALLY ENGULFED IN FLAMES WITHIN A MATIER OF MINUTES AND WAS COMPLETELY DESTROYED. THE FIRE DEPT. WAS CALLED WITHIN A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME BUT COULD NOT DO ANYTHING. (REPORT ENCLOSED)
AM 73 YEARS AND ABO USED THIS VEHICLE EVERYDAY AS I HAVE HAD BOTH MY KNEES AND HIPS REPLACED AND HAVE ARTHRITIS PROBLEMS AND IT HELPED ME TO GET AROUND MY HOME OUTSIDE AND DO VARIOUS JOBS AND WHEN AWAY I USED SINCE I CANNOT WALK FOR LONG STRENGHES AND WAS WHY I HAD IT WITH ME WHILE VISITING MY FRIENDS RESIDENCE ..

Aug 31 2015. My JD XUV 550 gator quit running. I found the gas tank cracked where the gas line connected to it with a metal band. My gator was backfiring and was smelling of gas before it shut down. I believe I had reently sent this but I want you to know that I had a $50.000 garage fire involving the same make and model. I am a beekeeper but I stated then that smoker was cool to the touch before the fire I am now convinced that I had emptied the device. This gator had begun backfiring and smelling of gas and 4 hours after I parked that vehicle I witnessed a spontaneous combustion from my back porch after I heard a whouuos sound or so.

The product, in the report: John Deere Gator 550 - Utility Vehicle. Side by Side off road vehicle. [REDACTED]
When stopping my John Deere Gator 550 (UTV) I went to engage the parking brake and the parking brake pedal went to the floor. The parking brake did not engage. On this model there is no other way to keep the unit from moving when turned off. We had to block the tire with wood to keep the unit from rolling away.
Dealer discovered that the cable attached to the parking brake pedal had snapped. Our unit was under 1 yr old and still under warranty. I feel this is a dangerous design defect. I have seen other reports of failing parking brakes at online forums that discuss this model.
