2021 Honda Talon 1000X4, 750 miles on ODO. While driving trails after traversing over a sharp bump, the Talon sends a code that shuts down the engine. This in turn loses steering power. Our Talon veered toward a sharp embankment losing all control . This also affected the brakes, limiting the options to thwart an accident.

We purchased a 2023 Honda Pioneer 1000-6 Crew Deluxe on December 9, 2023. While driving the vehicle the backseat gets very hot. In May we went for a ride in Scottsdale AZ in the Tonto National Forest and the passengers in the backseat was expressing concern that the backseat was very hot and getting uncomfortable. We stopped the ride. Let the UTV cool down and had the passenger move to the front seat so we could drive back home. This happened again the following weekend when my wife was in the backseat and she got overheated and felt sick. We had to stop so she and the machine could cool down and we went back home. When we got home we took a temperature reading with a [REDACTED] HVAC Clamp Meter just above the seat and it read over 140 degrees F. We made an appointment with the dealership and took the machine in.

The product, in the report: Honda Talon UTV

2019 Honda Talon 1000X extreme difficulty un-latching the seat belt following a accidental roll over and landing on the side. On two occasions, with two passengers each time, the passenger on the high side (machine on its side) has an extremely difficult time releasing the seat belt due to the weight at their thigh not allowing the high side passenger to release the seat belt. Both times required several attempts and both passengers to work together to get the high side passenger weight lifted enough and the other passenger to squeeze fingers in far enough to release the seat belt. This would be catastrophic should a fire break out and the high side passenger is alone. Passengers involved were adults and weighed under 150 & 180 pounds and were in very good physical health and strength. This happened once around 2019 and once near 5/12/2022, these dates are estimated.

The product, in the report: Honda P1000 UTV, Model SXS10M3DLM

I purchased a new Honda P1000 UTV, Model SXS10M3DLM ([REDACTED]) on 10/13/2022. Right after delivery I reported to the Honda dealership (Rock Hill Powersports, Rock Hill, SC) that there was a problem with the driver’s door that it does not latch securely. The door was difficult to latch and opens up on its own accord when driving. The door hinge was loose and at first it was thought that the bushings in the door itself were faulty. The dealership ordered replacement hinge bushing, but on trying to replace the bushings, it was found that the there was an issue with the door itself, apparently a faulty molding of the plastic door during manufacture. The dealership tried to urgently order a new door from Honda, but they were informed that there was a backlog on replacement doors. It appears that this is a more extensive problem than just in my case. Honda could not provide the dealership with a date when the replacement door would be available. After waiting 2 weeks and with no further updates from Honda to the dealership, I decided to contact Honda Powersports Customer Relations on 12/6/2022. I was assigned a case number ([REDACTED]). I informed the case manager that I had fallen out of the UTV (12/8/2022), but fortunately I was uninjured at it happened at very low speed and I had fallen onto soft grass. I always wear a seat belt, but when I fell out of the vehicle, I could not wear the seatbelt as I had to quickly access the bison herd through a farm gate and I have to do this under 15 seconds, otherwise I run the risk of being trampled by the wild bison. I informed the case manager of the urgency of the matter as I use the vehicle for my work, as I am a bison rancher. After various follow up calls with the case manager (on 12/6; 12/13 and 12/21), I was told that Honda still had no idea when the replacement door would be available. I feel that Honda were aware of this problem before I called them, and has done nothing to mitigate the danger of the matter of the faulty door. Due to the nature of my work as bison rancher, I have no other option but to use this UTV. The UTV I had before the Honda was traded in to purchase this Honda. I would appreciate it if the CPSC could urgently investigate this matter and maybe get a satisfactory response from Honda. Thank you for allowing me to bring this matter to your attention.

The product, in the report: 2016 Honda Pioneer 1000-5 Deluxe side by side

I own a 2016 Honda Pioneer 1000-5 Deluxe side by side. I am the original owner. While driving it today with my eight year old son (sitting in the middle front seat, with his seat belt on) on our private property, I stopped it and put it the transmission in park on a very slight grade on a wide path (pointing down). I left the engine on and the driver’s side door open. The transmission was in “2wd turf mode”. Upon stepping out of the vehicle it started to move forward with a loud clicking sound coming from the transmission. I lunged towards the vehicle and tried to grab my son out of the vehicle from the open driver’s side door, but of course could not retrieve him because he was strapped in with his seat belt. While attempting to grab my son, the vehicle’s driver rear-side tires rolled over both of my legs, which was a painful experience. The vehicle rolled approximately ten feet and then came to rest by running into a tree at a low speed. My left leg is quite painful (3 hours later), and I will seek medical attention if it does not abate quickly; there is a raised bump on by shin, on my knee, and my knee and calf are both extremely painful and hard to walk on. My son was upset by the experience, as was I. I note that Honda issued a recall for 2019-2020 models ([REDACTED]), but not my 2016. This was a very scary experience and could have resulted in even more serious injury to me or my son.

The product, in the report: 2016, Honda Pioneer 1000, Model SXS10M3PG Model Pioneer 1000

In 2016, I purchased a brand new 2016 Honda Pioneer 1000 utility vehicle/side by side. The bench seat was uncomfortably warm, because the motor is directly below it, and the vehicle did not come with heat shield protection. Later, approximately one to two years later, during one of several safety recalls, the heat shield protection for the seat was added. This greatly reduced the bench seat temperature. However, one day while braking hard, dangerously the front bench seat cushion shifted forward, off of the plastic bench seat frame. After stopping the vehicle I found that the bench seat cushion released from the frame because the glue that held it down failed, around the entire seat. I also found the seat was water logged. I notified Honda USA. Honda USA referred my concern to the local dealer Southern Powersports, Chattanooga, Tn. At this time the vehicle was past it’s one year warranty so the dealer only offered to glue the seat back into the frame and not replace it. I chose to glue it myself. I used a [REDACTED] brand adhesive. This held for maybe a year and has since released, making the seat situation dangerous again. In my personal, mechanically inclined, opinion I believe the high heat the bench seat endured, prior to the heat shield kit for the seat, caused the glue/adhesive to release. I can’t imagine the glue/adhesive manufacturer engineered their product to be used on a seat inches from a combustion engine without proper heat shielding. In internet searches I found other owners of the same model from the same years that did not come equipped with the later added heat shield, having the same glue/adhesive problems. I consider this to be a safety issue, just like if your car seat came off the frame, while you were braking. Please help.

Honda states about 2,000 Pioneer 1000’s were notified on this recall.

    Dear Sir/Madam

    I am a consumer.

I am reporting a safety concern: The potential for an unsafe consumer product to cause an incident or injury.

A brief history of a hazardous incident or safety concern of a totally destroyed vehicle. On June 1, 2016 the above All Terrain Vehicle was purchased at the Engelhart Center, 1569 GreenwayCross, Madison, Wisconsin 53713. The total purchase price was $19,284.37. (See Doc. #1) Until its untimely demise, the vehicle was seldom driven due to the Wisconsin weather, its open air body configuration, and the distance to the second residence near the [REDACTED]. See photo of this Honda vehicle at (See Doc. #2). Heat issues inside the vehicle cab, rising between the driver and from seat passenger were initially a concern at the time of purchase. Even with the open sides, open rear and split windshield, it got hot even at higher speeds. (30 miles per hour).

On or about June 4th, 2018 received the (1st ) recall notice from honda. This dealt with the heat issue emanating from the throttle area. The repair order described the “fix” as a Kit, Muffler, Prot.” The mileage on the vehicle at this time was 436 per the dealer’s invoice. (See doc. #3). This “fix” did not seem to diminish the heat emanating up through the floor between the passenger and the driver. On this recall Honda stated the “throttle can stick in the open position, posing crash and injury standards. This first recalled notice involved about 62,000 Honda Pioneers.

On or about September 17,2018, I received the second (2nd) recall notice from Honda.(See Doc. #4)This second recall notice dealt with the over heating muffler, posing potential problems. Also at this time the repair Tech checked to determine why the vehicle was stuck in first gear. He discovered that the neutral switch came un plugged. After connecting and a test ride no other issues were found. However, the heat issue in the from seat area remained with little abatement. Y\The mileage on the vehicle. The mileage on the Pioneer at this time was at 473, according to the dealers invoice. This second (2nd) recall notice, per Honda, involved 65,000 additional “pioneers.

On or about May 4th, 2019 I received the third (3rd) and final recall notice from Honda. (See Doc #5) This recall notice dealt with accelerator pedal. (sticking).

The dealer’s Tech completed the recall according to the specs, provided by Honda. Again, the heat issue continued be unabated on the plastic like material between and slightly behind the two from seats. The heat now was similar to that on the day of purchase. The mileage on the vehicle at this was 487, according to the dealer’s invoice. This third (3rd) recall, according to Honda, involved about 56,000 “Pioneers.

On July 3rd, 2019, at about 5:15 pm, the above All Terrain Vehicle was totally destroyed by fire while traveling on a gravel road in [REDACTED]. (See Doc. #7.) (This date was approximately two months and 105 miles from the date of the third recall repair by the dealer.). The fire occured on “[REDACTED]” between the two villages of [REDACTED] and [REDACTED].

As the flames rapidly grew, the two occupants of the vehicle bailed out onto the roadway in time to avoid any injuries. This Honda Pioneer 1000 had spontaneously burst into flames. The fire’s point or origin was between and slightly behind the two occupants seats. The total time until the vehicle was skeletonized was about 15 minutes. All traffic on the road was stopped until the fire burned out. The initial start of the fire and the progression of the conflagration can be seen at Document #6.

The fire burned out when all the combustible material in/on the vehicle was depleted. The [REDACTED] was on the scene at the end of the blaze. Also on the scene were the [REDACTED] and [REDACTED] Fire departments as was the [REDACTED] Emt’s. The vehicle’s frame/skeleton was then winched onto a flatbed from [REDACTED]. Fire department personnel then shoveled the burnt and melted debris off the roadway. The dark black smoke emanating from the conflagration reached a height of about 300 feet before dissipating.

The mileage on the vehicle odometer at the time of the fire was 592 at the start of the day and probably ended at an estimated 620 miles. The point of origin where the flames were first seen, was between and slightly behind the driver and passenger. This specific area has always been a source of heat since purchase, there was no appreciable lessening after the recalls. This low mileage vehicle was always kept in a pristine condition and the Honda Manual caveats were followed.

(See Doc. #8 for a picture of the Honda 1000-5, similar to the burned out vehicle) (See Doc #7. The fire personnel then shoveled the debris off the road.)

On July 171 2019 I again contacted my Insurance company ([REDACTED]). I asked them the following questions. A. Due to the widespread number of fires on the Honda Pioneer 1000 (2016-2019) Is [REDACTED] aware of any settlements to owners, by Honda regarding their engineering errors?

    B. Due to the low mileage on my Pioneer 1000 (620 miles when melted down). The pristine condition of the vehicle, and the number of recalls (62,000 on the first, 65,000 on the second and 56,000 on the third) [REDACTED] aware of any remuneration or programs that addresses the obvious manufacturing error.

    C. Does [REDACTED] have any advice on how I might proceed further in my contacts with Honda. My insurance company did not address or respond to my specific questions. My Insurances companies settlement with me, minus my $1,000.00 deductible was under the circumstances, fair. (1/2 the original purchase price.)

At Doc. #1O see photo of the initial flames starting between and slightly behind the two front seats. Had the two middle age males on board not had the presence of mind to rapidly bail out of this Honda, disastrous results could have occurred.

At Doc. #11 see select photos of the fire leading to the melting into the roadway.

On August 30, 2019 I wrote a letter to Honda describing the circumstances of the total destruction of the Honda Pioneer 1000. In this letter I asked if Honda had any obligations to ameliorate this matter or if this letter would be my last shot for relief of any kind.

In this letter I furnished Honda with several photos of the progression of the fire from start to finish. I also asked if there were any other entities I could go to and furnish them with the facts in this matter, to enable me to obtain a fair outcome in this incident and for me to recover my substantial loss. In the first call to me from Honda after my letter to Honda, “[REDACTED]” - not further identified, offered some vague possibilities of causation of the fire. “[REDACTED]” then said he would have to talk to “group” of Honda people and get back to me.

Cost of Vehicle $19,284.37 Total furnished to me by Ins. Co. $10,507.00 Total loss to me. $ 8,579.37

In the second call to me from “[REDACTED]” - not further identified, regarding our first conversation, he said he had contacted his people. The Honda people advised “[REDACTED]” that anything could have caused the fire. “[REDACTED]” theorized that perhaps a shop rag had been left on the engine, thus causing the fire. When pressed, “[REDACTED]” said he would not speculate as to the cause of the fire. I indicated that was perhaps an act of God, spontaneous combustion or just my bad luck. During our conversation the large Gorilla in the room (thousands of recalls) was not broached by eight [REDACTED] or me. “[REDACTED]” indicated that as long as a “cause of the fire could not be determined, Honda could do nothing for me.” (This seems to me to be similar to a Catch 22 situation, ie “we know our UTVs are burning, but if you cannot come up with the exact cause, we cannot help you.”). “[REDACTED]” was quite congenial - a good rep for Honda

Circumstantial evidence, often very good evidence, indicates to me that: 1. Due to the “thousands” of Pioneer recalls in the last four years, due to heat related issues, I may not be the only individual suffering a destroyed “Pioneer” after all “recalls” were fixed. 2. Perhaps a “fourth” recall should have been sent out. Also Honda may want to consider for there recreational vehicles: A. A mandatory mounted fire extinguisher on all UTV’s coming from the factory B. Fire retardant on floor boards and doors. C. Audible warning of any excessive heat issues. D. Prohibition of any child seats in UTV’s, Thank you for your time and consideration in this matter

I had just finished watching fireworks from afar as I sat on a long and undeveloped road when I went to a turnaround area and noticed a flame coming from beneath the seat of the UTV. I had been sitting idle for some timeprior. I owned the UTV. I shut the engine off and tried to exit the vehicle with great difficulty and finally l leaped from the vehicle onto the ground injurying my shoulder. I grabbed some dirt to throw down in the engine area to try and put out the fire numerous times but the fire would not go out. I removed a chainsaw from the back to try and save it. (The fire was not related to the fireworks in anyway as I was more than a half mile from any firework displays.)

In a panic I then went to restart the engine and then the fire became larger when the fuel pump started to run. I shut it off and tried more dirt. I tried it a second time and again more flames. I then proceeded to walk as quick as possible (i cant run well due to type 2 diabetes) to my camp which about 3/4 of a mile away by road. I yelled for my spouse across the cavern while walking to hopefully have her come get me. She met me at the driveway of our property and I immediately went and got our three fire extinguishers and 6 gallons of water in a container. I had her call 9-1-1.

When we got to the Honda, it was engulfed. I expended all my fire extinguishers and the water. It had little effect. My wife then went in our car to the main gate to let the fireman into the community as it is gated. By the time they got there the fire had dwindled some and they put water on it to put it out. The unit burned completely down to just its metal pipe frame. My chain saw also melted even though it was about 10 feet from the fire.

The fireman mentioned a recall on those units to which I never got a notice from the dealer or otherwise. I need to dig into my files to get the purchase info, VIN etc., but its a total loss and was not insured. I am fortunate to have escaped serious injury. My shoulder is currently in pain due to bailing out of the unit onto the ground. I am considering legal recourse, but not for certain at this time.

Honda model# 500 serial# to be populated by consumer before returning report Honda Cycle Center in Helena, MT the middle of October 2018

The consumers who are both in their 70’s creating this report purchased a side by side 4 x 4 with an odometer reading of 34 miles mid October 2018. Odometer was @ 0 when purchased. The first time they used it was around the same purchase time, they said that it had an odor of (cosmoline overheating. (from coating around pipes, engine parts, etc. The second time they used it the odor was stronger and was more as if something was catching fire. Sometime during the last week in October 2018 they used the unit again and the husband checked it out more thoroughly when he began smelling this odor and found that dried grass and leaves were between the plastic panel between the bottom of the frame and the engine. He is stating that these dried leaves and grass could very easily catch fire then cause physical and property damage. There are no injuries being reporting. The caller did contact the manufacturer and advised them that there should be a screen there to keep this dried grass and leaves from gathering where they could catch fire, However the manufacturer only advised him that anything he did to change the unit would void any warranty. The manufacturer representative also stated that they could do nothing about this issue because they are in Japan.

(See enclosed photos) We live in rural MT. Side by sides are very popular. They are used by ranchers, hunters and recreationalists on non paved roads. Most often the are used on grassy, even mountainous trails. Grasses and other vegetation, especially this fall season when hunters are active, packs in the tray beneath the transmission, engine & exhaust pipes. Even though there is a heat shield part way over the exhaust pipe the dried vegetation becomes hot to the point that there is a burning smell. It could (?) cause a fire.

Photos 1, 2, 3, show dried grasses which accumulated in the skid plate area. Photo 4 shows pieces of grass that were hanging out below full skid plate. It designed with slots in metal (photo 4)
