No one hurt Made Jan 28, 2014, sent to the company Feb 24, 2014, published by CPSC Mar 11, 2014
The product, in the report: UTV Side by Side
Caller purchased two side by side UTV’s on October 31st, 2013 one 800 and one 1000.
On January 11th, 2014 the caller and his 29yr old son were riding in a state park.
He and is son had riding for approximately one hour at a state park when they stopped and realized that the 800 his son was riding was on fire. While the son was riding he didn’t smell or see anything but once the riders stopped for a moment the son smelled smoke, got off the bike he was on then saw flames coming from underneath the cargo bed and coming out to the side approximately one foot.
There are no injuries being reported The caller tried to contact the manufacturer (did not obtain name) on January 11nd, 2014, was advised to contact the dealer. He contacted the dealer on January 13th, 2014 was advised that it had a recall (13-718/January 10th, 2013) on the UTV’s, to bring them in and they would put the kit on. He is still waiting for the 800 to be released with the repair from the 2013 recall which he describes as just a screen over to avoid gathering of leaves & debris in the exhaust area. Once he received the 1000 back with this recall repair he realized that the fire in the 800 is not a result of this problem because this fire is due to collection of leaves and debris in the muffler cover. He is reporting this second area of collection and fire hazard as well as the fact that he was sold these two vehicles with a recall already ten months into existence but no repair of the hazard.
