  1. No one hurt

Made Feb 12, 2021, sent to the company Mar 4, 2021, published by CPSC Mar 18, 2021

The product, in the report: Coleman Outfitter 550 UTV VIN # [REDACTED] Vin date: [REDACTED] Model Coleman Outfitter 550 Tag Date [REDACTED] Other number# [REDACTED] Outfitter 550 Vista Camo [REDACTED]

Noticed a STRONG gasoline smell when using my new Coleman Powersports Outfitter 550 UTV from the time I first got home with it. The smell continued, and eventually I investigated to find the (approximately) 4” fuel tank cap, which holds the fuel guage sensor, fuel supply & return lines was unscrewed from the top of the fuel tank, located under the driver/passenger seat. I solidly retightened it after ensuring that the gasket was in place and not mis-seated between the fuel tank and it’s cap. Since this time, the fuel cap has repeatedly unscrewed itself in excess of 4 times, spilling fuel when the gas tank is filled, driven etc.. This issue is clearly a design defect and a fire/explosion hazard.

On April 4th, 2021 I refueled the UTV’s gas tank for the 1st time since the March 3rd Hisun repair visit. I immediately began smelling a very strong gasoline odor within the UTV’s driver/passenger compartment. Upon examination, it was revealed that now, the fuel tank itself was leaking at a different place (zoom the attached photo) - it shows a circular opening in the fuel tank that is not used on this UTV at all - that is plugged from the inside of the fuel tank with some sort of a square plug with screws shot into the tank from the outside to pull upwards on the plug. So on April 5, 2021 I contacted [REDACTED], [REDACTED], and [REDACTED] of Hisun, along with Coleman Powersports Customer Service representative [REDACTED] by email to report the newest fire/explosion hazard of the fuel tank, and sent photos of where the leak was.

In my email, I also stated that I would be contacting the CPSC today, Friday April 9th 2021, to update my original CPSC report on this new issue. Yesterday, Hisun sent a mechanic to my property to replace the fuel tank. He confirmed that the only fix was to replace the fuel tank.

I noted, and he confirmed that they are custom making their own tools to remove the fuel pump from the fuel tank (loose fuel tank ring in my original CPSC report), and [REDACTED] further confirmed in an earlier phone call on April 6th that they have these spanner tools ordered, but have not received any from the manufacturer in China.

I noted that it must be very hard for any servicing dealer to do any work on this fuel tank/fuel float/fuel pump unless they fabricate their own tooling prior to service. No comment from [REDACTED].
