Good morning [REDACTED]. I hope all is well with you.
Wanted to advise you that we had a home fire yesterday that involved a Hoverboard. I don’t have all of the details yet on when it was purchased but based on photos taken, it appears to be a Hoverboard, LLC brand and a Dec. 2015 Christmas present. A bonus is that the family had two exact same boards for their two boys. One is definitely the cause and the other is mostly undamaged. We have both in our possession.
Brighton Fire has secured both boards to preserve them. The insurance company will likely want their investigator to have them for possible subrogation. I wanted the CPSC to be aware as well. The board that caught fire was located in a finished basement of the home. The family was gone for a few hours and when they returned, the house was filled with smoke. There was significant smoke damage to the basement living area with moderate fire damage.
If you would like additional information, give me a call. Thanks, [REDACTED]

My son’s hoverboard started overheating and sparking on the charger. Also it began shifting out on him as he was riding on it in our driveway and it threw him off and hurt him and broke his brand new phone. We cannot use the hoverboard anymore because we cannot charge it without sparks and he cannot ride it because it jerks and shorts out.

My Nephew was on the power board (which was a present for my son at Christmas) outside on the road. He had not been using it for very long. Dark grey smoke came out either side of the wheel. It then stopped working. It has not worked since.

The product, in the report: Hoverboard Powerboard PB-001, white
Powerboard was not in use, was not charging, and was not plugged in. Lights started flashing, and it made a grinding noise. On/off button was not effective in stopping this. About 10 minutes later, the Powerboard started to smoke. Took the unit outside, and it continued to smoke, a lot, and made popping noises. Used a fire extinguisher and water to douse the smoke and prevent flames. No injuries occurred.

A couple weeks into riding the Hoverboard it would just randomly stop working mid ride. The battery would just overheat and the entire thing just wouldn’t work and immediately turn off. No matter how long it charged it for. We stopped using it because once my boyfriend fell off on my way to work and seriously injured his head. Because of the sudden stop, he got a minor concussion when he fell and had to go to the hospital. Then, I was scared for it to overheat again and it has been sitting in the closet. I tried to contact Amazon and let them know, but I realized it was two days past the acceptable return date and didn’t know another method. It is nice to hear that I am not the only one experiencing issues with the battery. Hopefully, no one has gotten seriously injured. Please let me know if you will provide a shipment method to return the faulty product, or if I will get immediately refunded.

Emergency room Made Dec 27, 2015, sent to the company Jan 5, 2016, published by CPSC Jan 29, 2016
The product, in the report: Powerboard Hoverboard
HOVERBOARDS are dangerous!!!!
Son received the “most expensive & safest” hoverboard for Christmas (Powerboard brand). I stepped on it while holding onto the kitchen counter. I am an active (ski, run, etc.) physically fit mother of boys. It took off without me under it and I ended ub landing flat on my back after my feet raising another foot off the ground. It propelled me forward. I ended up with a very swollen sacrum, probable concussion and ruptured vessel in my left wrist (now in a splint). I am unable to sit without excruciating pain and spend the better part of Christmas day in the ER of St. Mary’s hospital, Richmond, VA. Ambulance was called (cx due to timing). These devices should be taken off the market.......end of story. I am unable to lie down, sit or use my left hand/wrist (I am left handed).
There is NO safe version of this product. I am now spending my entire Christmas vacation flat on my stomach until my sacrum and wrist heal.
DANGEROUS toys.....

Hospital admission Made Dec 9, 2015, sent to the company Dec 17, 2015, published by CPSC Jan 4, 2016
The product, in the report: Power board by Hoverboard. 2 wheel self balancing scooter with LED lights. Purchased from Amazon.com
On the morning of November 14, 2015, I was riding the Powerboard by Hoverboard. This was purchased from Amazon.com. When I went to step off of the board, the board leapt forward and swept my feet out from under me. I fell backwards from a standing position onto my outstretched right arm. Immediately, I felt my right elbow dislocate and experienced severe pain. My wife immediately drove me to the nearest emergency room where I was diagnosed with a right (dominant hand) elbow dislocation with a fracture of the joint and a ligament injury. On November 16, 2015, I underwent surgery on the right elbow and was told that recovery would take 3-6 months. I am a practicing surgeon and will be unable to work during this recovery period. I feel that the device is unsafe as it caused a severe career threatening injury and disability.
