No one hurt Made Jun 20, 2012, sent to the company Jun 28, 2012, published by CPSC Jul 20, 2012
The product, in the report: MVS 10 red and black gasoline powered stand-up scooter
I purchased the Motovox MVS 10 gasoline powered stand-up scooter on April 11, 2012 from Sears. On about May 15, 2012 the metal gas tank bracket failed and broke into causing the gas tank to fall off during operation of the scooter. I called the company and a warranty repair was initiated by a local repair shop approximately 10 miles from my home. The Motovox Company replaced the gas tank and paid the repair shop labor for the service. It took approximately two weeks for the repairs to be completed.
One week later, (approximately June 1, 2012) after the first gas tank repair, while the scooter was in operation the bracket that is part of the scooter frame broke into causing the gas tank to swing out away from the scooter. The tank is bolted on with two bolts and the frame bracket broke in between the two bolts causing one to remain in place and the other to swing out with the gas tank. I called the company three times to date and left messages each time. I haven’t received a call back from the company in reference to this problem. I feel this is a defect and is a direct result of the excessive vibration caused by the normal operation of the scooter engine (two cycle engine) and the lack of protection of the gas tank.
The first time this occurred the tank fell completely off and was being pulled along the sidewalk before the scooter could be stopped. It was still connected by the gas line to the carburetor. This problem has a great risk of the gasoline spilling from the tank and being ignited by the metal gas tank being dragged across the concrete and sparks from the friction. If the gasoline spills when the tank falls off and ignites the gasoline an explosion and resulting fire has the potential to be disastrous.
The gasoline level measuring unit has fallen loose into the tank on both gas tanks causing the round plastic lens to just lay on top of the tank loose. This allows gasoline to splash out and spill from the tank.
With the first instance of the bracket failing and now after the repair the frame mounting bracket failing, I feel this is a defect. I want the scooter repaired but I feel this will continue to be a problem with this design and would rather receive a refund from the manufacture and a return of the product to the manufacture.
Something must be done to ensure the safety of our youth riders of this scooter. They are standing on a problem that when it fails can/will cause a fire/explosion to be literally at their feet. I’m a career firefighter of 20 years and a fire prevention specialist for a metro Atlanta fire department. I can see a huge problem brewing with this defect.
