December 23rd, 2015 the 20 year old owner of the hoverboard was charging the unit, it beeped to indicate completion of charge. He got up and walked toward the hoverboard when he heard a whistling sound coming from it then it began smoking at which time he turned to yell for his parents and when he turned back the hoverboard exploded sending shrapnel pieces from the unit into the wall, the floor and into the nearby closet. This is being reported as a severe fire and injury incident due to the potential for the shrapnel pieces to penetrate the human body if directed toward the user or others nearby.
