The product, in the report: Zipp 101 rear clincher wheel with a Zipp 188 hub.
I was having my rear SRAM Zipp 101 bicycle wheel trued at [REDACTED] by a trained mechanic when the wheel’s 188 hub flange broke off. The mechanic said the hub was likely cracked and it was fortunate it didn’t happen while riding. He also mentioned it has been a persistent problem with Zipp’s 88/188 hubs from that generation and that the bike shop would contact Zipp (owned by SRAM) to discuss a warranty replacement. Zipp/SRAM said the wheel was out of warranty and offered no recourse, other than a slight discount off of MSRP on a replacement. In the process, I found out the front SRAM Zipp 101 wheel with an 88 hub was subject to a CPSC product [REDACTED] for this exact cracking problem. Zipp/SRAM only recalled the front hubs, but as my personal experience, and a quick search on google uncovered, the rear 188 hub flange cracking unexpectedly has happened to many other consumers. If this happens while riding, it presents the same safety hazard as the front hub cracking and should also be recalled.
