  1. No one hurt

Made Sep 7, 2011, published by CPSC Sep 29, 2011

The product, in the report: Yakima FlipSide Hitch Bike Rack (8002426) tilts 90 degrees to the right or left, whichever you choose, and completely out of the way for full access to the rear of your automobile. Simply pull the knob and the Yakima FlipSide flips down to the right or left for superior rear-of-vehicle access! Also includes all security & stability features you’d expect from a top-tier receiver hitch mounting bicycle carrier. Fits both 2 inch and 1-1/4 inch hitches right out of the box, no adapters needed! The Yakima Flip Side handles up to 4 bikes.

We were traveling 70 mph on Interstate 77 (in the mountains) and the bike rack (mounted in trailer hitch) pivoted towards the driver side of the vehicle. The rack was loaded with four bikes and locked in with cable lock. The bikes were drug approximately 500-1000 yards once we gained control of the vehicle and could pull over. This was a serious and unsafe situation to be in. The shoulder space on the side of a mountain is very limited. We managed to pull the loaded rack into the upright position. We then unlocked the bikes and removed one of the bikes hoping that less weight on the rack would alleviate the problem.

We were traveling with another vehicle that had some space to transport the first bike we took of the rack. Both vehicles were pulled over on the shoulder trying to get the situation resolved as quickly as possible. As soon as we got back up to speed, the rack pivoted again and we were dragging three bikes until we could stop.

We pulled over for the second time and had no other option but to remove all remaining bikes off of the rack and strap them onto a fully packed truck bed. In order to do this we had to remove the front wheels of the bikes and rearrange the cargo between the vehicles to accommodate the four bikes.

I cannot stress enough how dangerous this entire situation was. Semi Trailers and cars were passing us at 70 mph in the mountains as we had about 8 feet of shoulder space to work with. We were on the side of the road twice strapping down bikes just to get to the nearest exit to assess the situation. Not to mention we had to enter back onto the highway (twice) as quickly as possible for there was limited view points due to the winding interstate.

We managed to strap down all four disassembled bikes in the back of a truck that was traveling with us. The bikes where piled on top of cargo and was as tall as the cab. Had we not had this additional vehicle and the additional straps to tie down the heap of bikes, we would have had to call for assistance and wait on the dangerous shoulder for an unknown amount of time to get our bikes into another vehicle. We may have had to rent another vehicle to transport the bikes the 1,000 miles we needed to travel to get back home.
