The product, in the report: Wahoo Speedplay Dual sided entry clip. One full steel axle, and a pedal surface attached via a controversial single needle bearing. It i controversial as, prior to Wahoo buying Speedplay, the original product had a serviceable open bearing, could be greased etc. My original Speedplays with 50,000 kmms for 2 pairs, are still rock solid in 2025! The rider- usually strong riders who buy this. clips in the pedals and just ride. To unclip, you twist the foot and the cleat separates from the pedal.
In September 2025, while riding my Colnago V4Rs road bike, noticed a crunchy, loosening feeling while pedalling. Initially thought maybe shoe cleat bolts, chain crank. A few rides later, realized that the culprit were the Wahoo Speedplay Zero Pedals, right pedal and left pedal. These are high performance, dual sided entry clip in road bicycle pedals. They have an axle and, specific to a Wahoo redesign once buying the original Speedplay, single sealed cartridge bearing. What happened is that 2022-2023 users started reporting play AND/or Pedal base coming apart during a ride. There was an easy way to test- grab the pedal, if there is any play, there is danger. Wahoo PWR Link Zero also affected. Wahoo issues Stop Ride instructions and replaced sets all over the world. But only if the user realizes having the issue. I replaced x2 low mileage Speedplay Zero pedal sets Oct 2024, both had loosened. Sep 2025 5000 kms, the highest mileage set, started feeling crunchy mushy. Noticed side play AND up down. Wahoo created a new ticket for me, then nothing heard after. This is an exceptional danger. On a road bike should this occur at 30-55 km/hour, 100 RPM, 200-400 watts, in less than 700 milliseconds , as the foot falls with a collapsed pedal, the axle, on the crank, rotates back and impales the calf before the rider even realized what occurred. Exceptional risk of crash. The cause for the defect is widely know: Since changing manufacturing from the original Speedplay design, Wahoo and it Taiwan factory added low quality bearings and metals inside. These wear exceptionally fast, deform, loosen and create the risk mentioned above. Wahoo has been aware of the issue for nearly 3 years now. Gave us the impression fixing it, they never did. This should be a mandatory Global safety recall, on par with the Shimano failing crank recall. Youtube reddit and all reviewers are award of the issues; of Wahoo replacing them, and Wahoo telling all riders TO STOP RIDE as per my enclosed instructions. As I told Canadian regulators, Wahoo is fully aware of the severity of the risk. But, instead of doing a global Stop Sale safety recall, they are doing a case by case recall, skirting the line between lying by omissions and serious negligence.
