The product, in the report: Triathlon Bicycle, 2014 Specialized Shiv Pro Race
I own a 2014 specialized shiv pro race triathlon bike.
This bike has 2 carbon aero bars affixed to the aluminum base bars with 1 bolt each.
Evidently, there has been a recall on the aerobars due to a real and present safety danger wherein the bolts that hold the aero bars onto the base bars can either come loose, or worse, shear/ break during use.
This Saturday, April 18, 2015, while riding my shiv, I ran over a crack in the pavement and the left aero bar “snapped” off. This is exactly the issue that has caused the manufacturer to recall the bike.
This is unbelievably dangerous and I am most fortunate that I was able to maintain control of my bike and not crash at 26 mph. I took my bike into the Local bike shop that sold and assembled the bicycle for me, but evidently they manufacturer still has not shipped the replacement parts to the store.
For a company that is supposed to pride itself on making quality, high-end bicycles and “components”, it is hard to fathom that they can sell a product without testing and ensuring that the bolts that hold the bike together so that it can be maintained safely.
