The product, in the report: Schwinn brand infant/toddler bicycle helmet, size X-small, color teal, Ref#PP00421044
The bike helmet I purchased for my child is unsafe for use, in my opinion, because the dial-a-fit band is not properly secured to the shell, meaning that a baby can easily adjust the helmet into an unsafe position while in use, even when it is fitted correctly to begin with.
UPDATED ON 2/19/2025: [Bike helmets only serve their intended function when they are fitted and positioned correctly on the head. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, “A poorly fitting helmet will not protect your skull in a crash. A bike helmet that fits right should be comfortable, sit level on your head, provide adequate head coverage without blocking your vision, and be snug so that it cannot fall off when fastened.” This helmet CAN fall off when fastened, even if it fits properly, because it is impossible to properly secure it in that correct position. If the helmet were to fall off and the wearer were to experience a crash, they would not receive the protection against serious, even fatal head injuries that the helmet is intended to provide.]

The product, in the report: Schwinn children’s / toddler’s bicycle helmet model SW80342-2
My toddler was wearing her toddler helmet, which feel apart while she was wearing it. The internal latching system is not secured to the helmet - it’s only connected via [REDACTED]. I’m so lucky that we figured this out *before* the helmet was needed for safety reasons. I looked back to hear my daughter crying and the helmet dangling around her neck. In addition to failing as a safety device, this product introduced an entirely new hazard.

No one hurt Made Aug 18, 2020, sent to the company Oct 26, 2020, published by CPSC Oct 5, 2020
The product, in the report: Schwinn “Taff” 24 speed mountain bicycle 29” Model Taff, S8074WMDS UPC 3867513883
In early June of 2020, I purchased a Schwinn bicycle from WalMart. When I first rode it, the rear wheel became misaligned and the rear gear cassette lost its bearings. Upon closer inspection, I found out that the rear hub had split at the threads that the gears mount on. I registered my bicycle with Schwinn and made a warranty claim. Schwinn sent me a new wheel assembly that I mounted on my bike. On July 25th, I rode my bike again for the first time after repairing it and the rear wheel misaligned again, but didn’t crack the hub threads. I disassembled the new hub and compared the parts to the old hub. I found out that the reason for failure is because the axles had bent in both assemblies. I rode my bike only on paved roads and never jumped it or went over bumps, but I go up steep hills and challenge myself with higher gear settings. I suspect the failure is occurring because the supporting bearings on the gear half of the hub are deeply recessed. At the highest gear, the rear cassette is set to the outer-most gear. This applies the highest amount of stress on the axle and the axle bends under the load because the bearing is not at the outside of the hub, but about 1.5” recessed and the axle appears to be made with very soft steel. At this point, I don’t believe the bicycle design is safe and Schwinn has stopped responding to my emails. I also can’t contact Schwinn on their support phone number because their system simply reports that there are no associates available and then hangs up. On this page of this form, I don’t see a way to attach images, but I have images. I will attach if possible or provide them if needed. I also still have all of the parts (except for the bearings from the first wheel assembly). No one hurt Made Jun 23, 2020, sent to the company Aug 25, 2020, published by CPSC Sep 9, 2020
The product, in the report: From the Amazon.com listing: Website: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07K3PNCQ4/ref=ppx_od_dt_b_asin_title_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Description: This Schwinn Elm girl’s bike with 20-inch wheels is designed for children 6 years old and up, or 48 - 60 inches tall. The Elm is perfect for riding to the park or riding on the sidewalk around the neighborhood. With Schwinn’s SmartStart Technology, this bike is designed just for kids: lighter frame, cranks and pedals are positioned forward, gearing designed for easier starting, narrower pedal positions, and smaller grips and seat. Designed with younger riders in mind, this bike includes a rear coaster brake (reverse the pedals to stop) and a front caliper brake (hand-brake like adult bikes); easing the transition to a hand-brake-only bike when they’re ready. The adjustable saddle, seat post, and slack seat-tube angle make for easy, tool-free adjustments to allow the Schwinn Elm girl’s bike to grow with your child and prepare them for a full-sized bicycle. The Schwinn Elm girl’s bike with 20-inch wheels comes ready to be assembled and includes the following: saddle handle, kickstand, chainguard, and number plate. Manufacturer’s toll-free number from the manual (I believe this is the number to Pacific Cycles, and not Schwinn): 1800-626-2811
Please note that this was not an incident. I am reporting safety issues with a bike that I purchased. I purchased a 20” wheel-sized bike for my child on Amazon.com. It was listed as “Schwinn Elm Girls Bike for Toddlers and Kids”. Although it is a Schwinn branded bike, I believe that the manufacturer’s name was Pacific Cycles, as I noted from the manual that came with the bike. The bike that I received had numerous flaws. First, the front fork was manufacturer bent, so that one of the forks was essentially pointing straight up/down, while the other fork was pointing outward. This made it difficult to attach the front wheel to the fork, and was what led me to do an examination of the fork prior to completing assembly. Any parent who does not understand bikes might not detect the issue. It’s a potentially big concern since the wheel would be very difficult to install, and would not be safe when installed. Secondly, I found that the hubs of both the front and rear wheel had a deep, grinding sound, indicating that the wheel hubs/bearings were defective. Thirdly, I found that the pedal/crank bearings were also flawed, and made a similar grinding noise as the front and rear wheel hubs. Finally, there have been significant negative reviews for this particular bike on Amazon.com left by parents, namely with safety concerns. In addition to some parents experiencing the issues I’ve described above, other parents noted that the chain broke after day three of riding, the pedals becoming loose, the pedal/crank bearings breaking after short use (sometimes causing the chain to again fail). The percentage of one star reviews on Amazon.com (mostly safety concerns) is at 11%, while a significant proportion of the 2- and 3- star reviews (i.e., 10% combined) also mention safety and quality control issues with this bike. Please note that I no longer have the bike. I returned it back to Amazon.com on the day that I received it, after detecting the serious flaws with the bike.

The product, in the report: Schwinn Juveline Bicycle Seat; Bike Model S1690TGA
The seat of Schwinn Juvenile Bicycle Model S1690TGA has a plastic material covering the seat that begins to fail/crack within 30-60 days of normal use. Within 3 months the seat covering cracks, curls, outward/upward and stiffens creating very sharp point and edges that can poke through pants material or cut skin if the child where short pants.
I purchased the bike in May 2019, had the seat failed soon after and received a replacement part by August 2019. The replacement seat also failed on the same timeframe and in the same manner, i.e. failure began in October and was unusable by late December. However, Pacific Cycle (maker of Schwinn) claims there is now a 30-day warranty on the seat and they would no longer replace those defective and dangerous parts after that timeframe.
Incidents of child being cut by sharp plastic edges were in August and December 2019 for 2 separate parts (the latter was the replacement of the former)
This product needs a recall and Schwinn needs to stock an alternative replacement part!!

I purchased a Schwinn Women’s Gateway 28” 700c Hybrid Bike in Cream from Target on May 27, 2019. It was purchased from the Target at [REDACTED], Gainesville, FL 32608. I have ridden it to work and the grocery store more than 20 times since I purchased it. Today I took the same route to work as I have each day prior. They bike is 17 days (less than one month) past the date of purchase. Today the right handle cover came off. The handle covers were sold with the bike (they came attached). I did not buy them separately and then attach them myself. I lost balance because it came off while I was making a left turn. I fell in the middle of a four way intersection. I experienced cuts and bruises. The intersection is on the University of Florida campus. It is the intersection between [REDACTED] and [REDACTED]. Upon removing the handle covers I see they are different sizes.

The product, in the report: Brand New - Kids Schwinn Deelite Cruiser Bike 20” – Purple
We bought our 5 turning 6 year old daughter the Kids Schwinn Deelite Cruiser Bike 20” – Purple. The second day of her riding the bike, her leg became trapped between the peddle arm and the bike frame.
I was unable to advance the peddle forward given the position of her leg and the relative angle of the peddle arm. Any attempt caused her pain and there was no clearance to free her leg. The only option was to disassemble the kickstand and rear wheel to allow the peddle to rotate in the opposite direction. Thankfully we were in our driveway and I had access to the necessary tools. Had this happened at the park or ride trail, we would have had to call the fire department to cut the peddle arm off the bike to free her leg.
Understandably children that are first learning to ride will tend to take a spill or two. However, I cannot understand how a child’s bike is designed that would their leg to become trapped? Especially to the point where I had to disassemble the rear portion of the bike to remove her leg.

The product, in the report: Infant (ages 1-3 bike helmet)
Purchased No-pinch infant bike helmet from a Target store in Charlotte NC today. This afternoon found a very small plastic cover and what appears to be the magnet or battery (from the chin buckle) on the floor. No one has done anything to the helmet other than wear it once. This is very definitely a choking hazard and depending on what the metal disc is if it is a battery it is a positioning hazard. I have pictures I can send. Recommend MOST URGENT action on this.

The product, in the report: Infant / Toddler bike helmet
I have a safety concern for the infant/toddler helmet with the below model information.
Model #: SW78362-2 REF#: PP00189047 LOT # ABPSAH 11-12-2014
On the helmet strap that had a black piece of plastic (not the red plastic “hook” side), the piece of the plastic that covers the magnet broke off while we were taking the helmet off our child, allowing the magnet to drop out. This is not only a safety concern for when a child has the hemet on (helmet latch wouldn’t be secure), but it is also a potential situation for an infant/toddler to swallow the loose magnet.
I bought this helmet at Target in Omaha, NE. I bought it late April or March 2015 and it hasn’t been used more than 10 times. It is worn by a 16 month old, so you know it hadn’t had a lot of wear and tear for the plastic piece to fall/break off.

The product, in the report: Schwinn Infant Bike Helmet Item # SW77015-2 UPC # 3867577151 Bought at Target 3/5/2013 Design: Blue with Cars and Roads
During the first use of the Schwinn Infant Bike Helmet the glue that holds the velcro that holds the soft pads surrounding the head failed. The pads form a band that attaches to the easy fit adjuster in the back of the head. Two glue spots completely failed and the rest are loose/easily pulled off. The failure resulted in the helmet not fitting correctly and becoming loose and unsafe. It was no longer positioned correctly to be of any use in an accident. We noticed the failure quickly and there were no injuries because of it.

I’ve bought this bicycle from Amazon.com:
Schwinn Discover Men’s Hybrid Bike (700C Wheels)
When I tried to ride it for the first time, a pedal fell off. This is dangerous if you lose your pedal while in traffic. Later, the seat came off from the seat pole. Reviews on Amazon.com mention two more cases of pedals falling off:

The product, in the report: Schwinn Cruzair Seat - A large padded bicycle seat designed to increase rider comfort with incorporated gel padding
I purchased this seat from Amazon and as usual, fulfillment was great! Then, I installed the seat and began riding. I do about 8 miles per day on flat to gentle hill bike trails for exercise. The seat was pretty comfortable UNTIL, I hit a SMALL bump in the trail on my suspension MTB in January and the seat blew up. I came down with full force onto the top tube of the bike and and crashed. When I say blew up, I mean there were seat parts all over the place. It felt like someone hit the bottom of my tailbone in an upward direction with a sledge hammer.
What appeared to happen during the catastrophic failure of this poorly and inadequately designed product was the attachment rails that fit into the seat post clamp bent down in front of the clamp when my weight came down on it going over the small bump (less than 2 inches). This bending, in turn, put undue pressure on two plastic attachment posts at the saeat’s rear breaking them at the ends of the attaching screw. This detached the poly foam seat itself from it’s metal attaching rails. The two posts connecting the rails to the seat are held by VERY SHORT screws going into the posts less than 1/2 of their length. The sheer point was a full inch below the bottom of the poly seat moulding.
Theese 2 posts appear to be molded directly into the seat and are only about a half inch diameter each and are hidden from view. They are essentially plastic cylinders 1 1/2” - 2” long that capture the screw with a wall thickness of only an eight to a quarter inch at most. CLEARLY NOT ENOUGH STRUCTURAL STRENGTH to maintain structural integrity when stressed. As I mentioned, the undersized posts are NOT VISIBLE because they are surrounded by two rubber bumpers presumably designed to absorb shock (clearly not functional). The rails also are not made of material strong enough to function as designed as they bent down so easily at the front. They appear to be cold steel rather than tougher stainless or magnesium allow that would resist bending.
The injury I sustained to my perineum and spine has not yet resolved and I am considering legal remedies for all the discomfort, pain and distress caused by this faulty product. This seat’s inadequate design is NOT SAFE and certainly NOT DURABLE. IF YOU VALUE YOUR HEALTH, DO NOT BUY THIS SEAT.

The product, in the report: bicycle rim & tube.
I purchased new, a Schwinn 28” rimmed hybrid bicycle on June 17, 2011. On August 26th and 28th of 2011 Not having added any more air pressure to the tires. I experienced blow outs of the tubes on both the front tire and rear tire. I had stopped and was not on the bike after having ridden 10 miles that morning. After about 10 min. the front tire just popped . The tube blew out on the top side, next to the rim. The rubber band that protects the tube from the spoke holes also had a hole blown through it. It was the first spoke hole from the valve stem. The tube and rubber band showed identical bulges that lined up with all of the spoke holes in the rim. On August 28th after having ridden a additional25-30 miles from having the first flat tire. The tube in the rear wheel also failed with another blow out at the exact same place in the tube. The top of it in the first spoke hole next to the valve stem. But this time the blow out was while I was riding at approx 25 mph.
