The product, in the report: Ridley Orion Road Bicycle with original Mavic Aksium wheelsets. The defective components are part of the wheelset.
While cycling downhill on a very steep section of Hicks Road in Almaden CA, my front tire spontaneously deflated, nearly causing a serious crash. This caused the rider to become stranded, as it could not be repaired with equipment most riders will carry on this road. When I replaced the inner tube, the second tube also spontaneously deflated. I noticed that the plastic tire liner which sits between the wheel rim and the tire deformed, causing the puncture. Due to brake friction on the steep descent, the wheel rim had heated up, and the tire liner could not withstand the heat. Most road bikes use a cloth tire liner which is not subject to failing due to brake friction. The Ridley Orion bike with Aksiom wheels must be recalled, and have the faulty tire liners replaced.
