The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

  1. No incident, no one hurt

Made Sep 21, 2026, sent to the company Sep 24, 2026, published by CPSC Oct 8, 2026

The product, in the report: Retrospec Dart 24 Kids Bike (7 Speed), a children’s bicycle designed for use by children.

I purchased a brand-new Retrospec Dart 24 Kids Bike (7 Speed), Order Number [REDACTED], for use by a child. Before the bicycle was ridden, I inspected it and discovered that the front brake was visibly twisted and misaligned. The front brake does not function properly.

Because the front brake is a critical safety component of a children’s bicycle, I believe this condition presents a potential risk of a crash and injury if the bicycle were ridden in this condition. The bicycle has not been ridden because of this defect, and no one has been injured.

After discovering the defect, I contacted Retrospec Customer Service on September 7, 2026, through their online chat and reported the problem. I was told that the issue would be escalated on September 8. I then sent a detailed written complaint to Retrospec by email on September 8 and made additional follow-up attempts after receiving no response.

I eventually contacted Retrospec again through their website Customer Service form. Retrospec opened a customer service case and instructed me that the case could be closed if I did not respond within 24 hours. I responded to their message on September 17, 2026, within the required timeframe. As of September 21, 2026, I have still not received a response or resolution from Retrospec.

I have photographs and video documenting the condition of the front brake. I have not attempted to repair, adjust, or modify the brake myself, and the bicycle remains unused because of the safety concern.

  2. Emergency room

Made Aug 5, 2017, sent to the company Aug 18, 2017, published by CPSC Sep 1, 2017

The product, in the report: Retrospec 5-in-1 Bike and Ball Floor Pump, matte black, description from Amazon (where it was purchased): - Easy-to-use locking pump head with universal valve for Presta and Schrader Tires - Extra long hose and large gauge face to easily read pressure - Includes 3 accessory tips to inflate sports balls, yoga balls, and floatation devices/mattresses - Ergonomically designed to be more comfortable - Max 160 PSI

I was using the Retrospec brand bicycle floor pump and my 6 1/2 year old (almost 4’ tall) daughter wanted to help me pump. I let her. I was standing behind her “spotting her” making sure the pump didn’t fall over. She was pumping in an up and down, up and down motion. The handle of the bike pump came off as she pulled up but didn’t catch herself before she started to lean down again. The metal tip of the bike pump was fully extended. Her face went straight into the metal pole. The metal tip of the pole went into her right eye. We spent the next 3 hours at our local emergency room. She scrached her eye. We were very lucky the injury was not far worse. The bike pump handle should have never come off. The pump was purchased on Amazon June 2016 and only used two times before this incident occurred.
