The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

The product, in the report: Barlow Pass Bicycle Tire, extra light, size 700x38 and made by Rene Herse Cycles (formerly known as Compass Cycles). Link to the product is available at: https://www.renehersecycles.com/shop/components/tires/700c/700cx38-barlow-pass/ Product description according to the manufacturer is: The Barlow Pass is the sweet spot for most all-road bikes. We name our tires after the passes in the Cascade Mountains that have inspired them: Barlow Pass (photo) is near the ghost town of Monte Cristo in the northern Cascades. Our Barlow Pass is the perfect tire for rides that combine equal portions of pavement and gravel: light enough so your bike retains the nimble feel of a road bike, yet 38 mm wide to give you amazing traction on pavement and off. The Standard casing is our more affordable option: comfortable and fast, yet also strong to withstand considerable abuse. The Extralight casing takes the performance, comfort and feel of your bike to an entirely new level. The Endurance casing is reinforced for extra sidewall protection and puncture resistance, while retaining most of the speed and comfort for which Rene Herse tires are famous. The Barlow Pass is tubeless-compatible. For tubeless setup, we recommend SealSmart sealant. When used with tubes, we recommend the [REDACTED] or [REDACTED] tubes.

The bicycle tire is made by Rene Herse Cycles formerly known as Compass Cycles. The model is called Barlow Pass, extra light. Size is 700 x 38c. The tire was mounted on my front wheel. While riding, the sidewall of the tire suffered a failure. There was a loss of control over the bicycle as air rapidly escaped from the tire. At the time of failure, the tire had been ridden approximately 650 miles.

I believe the failure to be a manufacturing defect, design defect, or both rather than as a result of striking a rock or other object because the failure occurred on a road clear of obstacles. Further, as evident from the pictures, the area surrounding the failure (including the sidewall above and rim below) is free of scratches, scrapes, or other abrasion marks that would indicate contact with a rock or other object.

I provided a picture and description of the failure to Compass / Rene Herse Cycles. The company deemed the failure the result of a cut rather than a manufacturing defect - despite the lack of abrasion surrounding the failure. If not a manufacturing defect, I believe the tire is of a defective design and not appropriate for its intended use.
