  1. No one hurt

Made Jun 1, 2012, sent to the company Jun 29, 2012, published by CPSC Jul 16, 2012

The product, in the report: 26” Men’s Bicycle

    Pacific Cycle _ Bicycle Model# Evolution 26” Mens with Serial# SNESD10AE5228.

Caller has owned various bicycles and has been riding bicycles for over ten years.

Caller’s daughter purchased the bicycle in this report for Father’s Day in May 1, 2011. He began riding this bicycle around the first of April 2012.

The card that came with owner’s manual for bicycle reads, “Front and rear linear pull brakes for sure stopping power”; Caller states that this is definitely not a true statement.

Caller has been riding this bicycle approximately two months.

Each time caller has ridden this bicycle, the brakes have failed to work at all.. Caller weighs 185lbs, is 5’10” tall.

He called a bicycle repair shop where he was informed by the customer service rep that they had been constantly adjusting the brakes for this model, or repairing the brakes.

He has not contacted the manufacturer and says he is going to allow CPSC to contact them.

[Additional text from submitter:] P-3 OF OWNERS MANUAL OF PACIFICCYCLE (C)2007 STATES BMX STYLE BICYCLES ARE A POPULAR GENERAL PURPOSE TYPE MOST SUITED FOR YOUNG RIDERS. THEY ARE VALUED BECAUSE OF THEIR STURDY AND SIMPLE CONSTRUCTION, AND LOW MAINTENCE. THE PACIFIC BICYCLE OWNERS MANUAL CONSISTS OF 112 PAGES IN ENGLISH AND ANOTHER 112 PAGES IN SPANISH. I HAVE ONLY BEEN RIDING THIS PARTICULAR BIKE LESS THAN 2 MONTHS. I AM VERY EASY ON BRAKING BUT AS OF 6-3-12 THE PADS WERE PRACTICALLY WORN OUT FROM ALL FOUR BRAKE ARMS UNKNOWINGLY TO ME APPARENTLY INTERMITTENTLY NOT RELEASING AFTER APPLYING BRAKES. I AM 77 YRS OF AGE AND NOT A HOT RODER ON BIKES AND I RIDE ONLY ON PAVED STREETS AND ROADS IN LEXINGTON KY.

I NOTICED A FEW DAYS AFTER I STARTED RIDING MY PACIFIC BICYCLE, THE BRAKES WERE NOT STOPPING THE BIKE LIKE THE OTHER BIKES I HAD RIDDEN. I CHECKED WITH NUMEROUS OTHER BIKE OWNERS AND RIDERS AND THEY STATED ALSO THAT THIS TYPE BRAKE SYSTEM IS EXTREMELY UNSAFE AND UNRELIABLE. IT APPEARS MOST ALL BICYCLES NOW HAVE THIS SAME TYPE BRAKING SYSTEM. THE LAST TIME I RODE MY PACIFIC BIKE I HAD TO USE MY FEET TO STOP. THE BRAKES WOULD NOT STOP SAME. IF THIS HAD HAPPENED OR DOES HAPPEN TO A YOUNG INEXPERIENCED RIDER AT AN INTERSECTION THERE COULD POSSIBLY BE A SERIOUS INJURY OR FATALITY, IN MY OPINION.

I FOLLOWED ALL INSTRUCTIONS IN OWNERS MANUAL REF LUBERCATION SO THAT WAS NOT THE CAUSE OF PROBLEM.

I ALSO CONTACTED A BIKE REPAIR SHOP HERE IN LEXINGTON, KY AND HE STATED ALSO AND AGREED THIS TYPE OF BRAKE SYSTEM WILL NOT HOLD AN ADJUSTMENT.

I HAVE NOT RESEARCHED TO SEE IF THE SAME BRAKE COMPANY MANUFACTURES BRAKE SYSTEMS FOR MOST BIKES THESE DAYS AS I HAVE OBSERVED THIS DESIGN ON MOST BIKES NOW. THIS PROBLEM DESERVES AND SHOULD RECEIVE IMMEDIATE ATTENTION. A RED OVER BLACK 8” X 5 ¼” CARD THAT CAME WITH BIKE ALSO STATES EST 1977 PACIFIC BICYCLES 26” MENS EVOLUTION. SO WHICH IS IT, A YOUNG RIDERS OR A MAN’S BIKE. THIS IS A MANUFACTORING PROBLEM AND NOT K-MART WHERE I PURCHASED MY BIKE. THE BIKE REPAIR GENTLEMAN I CONSULTED ADVISED ME HE IS VERY FAMILIAR WITH THE PACIFIC BRAND AND EVERY ONE HE HAS WORKED ON HAD BRAKE PROBLEMS. ONE GENTLEMAN (OLDER) SAID HIS IS A $200 BIKE SO THE PRICE ISN’T A FACTOR. YOUNG PERSONS, MENS BIKE OR BOTH – SPECIFY?!

The product, in the report: Legacy 26” Bicycle

Caller purchased 26” bicycle in May 2011, weather has not permitted him to ride until recently. On 07/27/2011 he and his wife decided to go bike riding, he got on the bike but before he rode 10 feet the bicycle fell apart broke into three pieces. The frame broke in half, front frame and forks and front wheel were second break and rear portion with frame & rear wheel were third piece. Bicycle was assembled by Target Stores. Callers left elbow and left lower leg hit pavement and he received abrasions, his wife administered first aid. Caller states that the failure is somewhere in the front portion of the bicycle, that he hadn’t gotten up to any speed in 10 feet but if someone were going faster due to the bicycle coming apart it would throw them forward with force and they could hit their head.

Caller contacted manufacturer on 07/27/2011, was referred to another office within their company, he called, left a message at that extension also on 07/27/2011, hasn’t received return call yet.

Caller’s wife has the same model bicycle, her bicycle did not fall apart but she only rode it for approximately 25 yards. As quickly as his bike fell apart she got off of hers and they put them away for fear of injury. Caller is reporting as a severe safety hazard with potential for great harm.
