I am writing to formally report a serious safety issue with a bike I purchased for my son:

Product: 700c Ozark Trail G.1 Explorer Flat Bar Gravel Bike, Large Frame, Green (Fits Riders 510 63)

    Purchase Date: March 2025

Purchase Location: Walmart (pre-assembled by store)

On July 31, 2025, my son was riding this bike to the park when the front wheel suddenly detached while he was on a neighborhood street. He fell off the bike, and although he was very lucky to avoid serious injury, this could have ended in a severe accident.

I immediately returned the bike to Walmart and explained the incident. The store informed me that they could not take any action and instructed me to contact customer service. I am extremely concerned that this issue could happen to other families and result in major injuries.

This is not just a customer service matter it is a critical product safety concern. A bike with an improperly secured or defective front wheel assembly should never have been sold. I strongly urge Walmart and the manufacturer to:

Investigate the quality and safety of this model and the assembly process.

Issue a recall or safety notice if other bikes may be affected.

Ensure proper inspection and assembly procedures at the point of sale.

I am requesting immediate acknowledgment of this complaint and details of what corrective actions will be taken. Please also advise on how I will be compensated or refunded for this unsafe product.

For reference, I am keeping the receipt and photographs of the bike and the defect.

This matter needs urgent attention to protect other consumers from harm.

  2. Emergency room

Made Aug 3, 2025, sent to the company Aug 5, 2025, published by CPSC Aug 19, 2025

The product, in the report: The product is an Ozark Trail 700c G.1 Explorer Flat Bar Gravel Bike, purchased from Walmart on June 21, 2025. It features a large frame designed to fit riders approximately 5’10” to 6’3” and above. The bike has 700c wheels, which are thinner than typical mountain bike tires, more suited for gravel and mixed terrain riding rather than rugged off-road mountain biking. The bike is primarily green in color, with a steel frame and flat handlebars. It includes multiple gears and is designed for a comfortable, efficient ride on paved or lightly unpaved surfaces. No modifications were made after purchase, and the bike was assembled according to the manufacturers instructions (either in-store or through Walmarts assembly service). The reported defect concerns the front wheel assembly, which detached unexpectedly during normal use, resulting in a severe fall and injury.

On Thursday, July 31st, 2025, my 15-year-old son was riding a brand new Ozark Trail Youth Bike purchased from Walmart on June 21, 2025. While riding it on a paved sidewalk, the front wheel suddenly detached, causing the bike to stop abruptly and throwing him forward onto the concrete.

He sustained a cervical sprain, severe facial bruising, abrasions on his body, and a shoulder injury. Emergency services were called, and he was taken to the emergency room by ambulance. He is now wearing a neck brace and an arm sling as part of his recovery.

The bike was being used as intendedridden gently on a neighborhood sidewalk. There was no misuse, rough terrain, or stunts involved. The sudden detachment of the front wheel is extremely alarming and suggests a potential product defect or improper assembly.

This incident has caused serious physical and emotional trauma to my son and our family. I am reporting this to help prevent others from experiencing similar harm.
