The product, in the report: Raleigh MXR 16 mini bicycle for children 3-5 years old. Rear part of bicycle body and half of crossbar are grey, the upper half of the crossbar and front fork are white, while the handlebars are orange.

On Sunday, December 14th, 2014, my 4 year old son was riding his recently purchased MXR16 Raleigh bicycle with training wheels in Long Beach, California, at relatively slow speed under the supervision of his mother, a registered nurse, and father, an epidemiologist, on a relatively clean and fenced in paved recreation area at a local middle school. The child was wearing a Bell helmet as well as Bell kneepads and elbow pads. At approximately 1:00 pm under clear weather, my son slowly tipped over, just out of the reach of his father, and fell to his right onto the pavement while gripping the handles and remaining in a seated position. He immediately let out a scream and began intensely crying. As his father picked him up, he noticed a significant amount of blood emanating from the child’s right pinky finger, which was amputated cross-sectionally from the left to the right side and was dangling from a sliver of skin. The pinky finger of the right hand had become caught between the right handle of the handlebar and the pavement and the cylinder of the metal handlebar, under the weight of the bicycle and the 35 pound pre-schooler, had protruded from the rubberized handle.

The child was taken immediately to the closest ER at Long Beach Memorial Hospital, where the ED diagnosis was “right hand fifth finger tip of the finger with near complete amputation approximately 3 mm segment no involvement of the MCP, PIP, DIP. With tuft fracture.” The patient’s finger was cleaned, stabilized, x-rayed, immobilized with xeroform dressing, the patient given pain management mediation, and the patient was referred for a next day visit with a local hand and wrist specialist.

The next day, the hand and wrist specialist physician informed the patient’s mother that the amputation was not amenable to surgical intervention, prescribed antibiotics and analgesic medication, and advised to follow up with Kaiser Permanente, the patient’s health care system. The patient is currently (12/27/14) being monitored by Kaiser Permanente as the fingertip tissue dies, dries, and falls off.
