The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

  1. Hurt, no treatment

Made Sep 26, 2014, sent to the company Oct 6, 2014, published by CPSC Oct 28, 2014

The product, in the report: Michelin City tire, 26 x 1.85 (47-559) size

I purchased a Michelin City tire, 26 x 1.85 (47-559) size, from Bike Nashbar on Aug 7, 2014. I installed the tire on Aug 22 and inflated to a pressure within the recommended range as stated on the tire (min 36 psi, max 87 psi (6 bar)), using a new floor pump, with a gage, purchased at the same time from Bike Nashbar. The rim was manufactured by Mavic and is rated for the size tire installed. Within minutes, while I was standing next to the bicycle with the newly inflated tire, the tire burst, due to the tire bead popping off the rim. As a result of the burst, which caused a very loud sound, I lost significant hearing in both ears, but especially the right ear which was closer to the source of the sound. I also developed an earache in the right ear. My bicycle rim was warped significantly by the force of the burst. I believe there is a design flaw in the tire with respect to the recommended maximum pressure printed on the tire. As evidence that Michelin knows the max safe pressure is lower than that stated on the tire, the Michelin website (which I checked only after the incident) currently states a max pressure of only 65 psi (4.5 bar) for the 47-559 tire.
