The product, in the report: Road bicycle wheel set
I have a set of Mavic Ksyrium SL wheels for my road bike. I reach speeds of 45 mph going down hill. 2 weeks ago, my bike machine discovered a crack that is about 90% all the way around the rear hub of the wheel. He told me the hub could have broken at any time during my rides and would have collapsed the wheel and I would have crashed on the pavement. I have contacted Mavic wheels company several times and they have failed to call me as they said they would.

The product, in the report: Bicycle Wheel (rear); Mavic T 221 Aluminum (622X17 - 6106
Noticed cracks in the wheel at 8 spoke holes (all at spokes emanating from the gear side) of the rear wheel of my bicycle. Bicycle is a [REDACTED] purchased in 1998 and ridden about 12,500 miles. No accident/injury was caused. The wheel is a Mavic T 221(622X17 - 6106) made of aluminum. I was concerned that a catastrophic failure could occur and have replaced the wheel. This bicycle has been ridden almost exclusively on paved trails and roads. I weigh 220#. The wheel has not been involved in any accidents. I’ve taken excellent care of this bicycle and would not have expected such a failure in such a critical part. I have brought this to the attention of a Mavic representative via the warranty department at Outdoor Gear Canada ([REDACTED]). The Mavic representative told them that “because this is an old wheel, Mavic doesn’t classify this as a manufacturing defect...the aluminium wheel on tension will loose his (sic) property after many year of riding. This is why Mavic has a 2-year warranty on all wheel manufacturing defect.” It is my contention that this is more likely a design defect, rather than a manufacturing defect. I believe it could represent a significant safety issue since the cracks require close inspection to identify. I was never provided any paperwork from Mavic on this wheel that would convey either their warranty terms or any cautionary instructions regarding the need for frequent inspection or the expected service life of the wheel. When [REDACTED] identifies cracks in aluminum structures on their airplanes, they institute rigorous inspection procedures for the airlines. I would expect that if Mavic is designing for a 2-year service life, they should clearly warn the consumer of this and/or institute inspection procedures that the consumer could conduct.
