The product, in the report: Woman’s 26” 7-speed bicycle https://www.walmart.com/ip/26-Women-s-Margaritaville-Multi-Speed-Cruiser-Bike/47443499?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=0&adid=22222222227041675033&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=86481875569&wl4=pla-192622011649&wl5=9010957&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=8175035&wl11=online&wl12=47443499&wl13=&veh=sem
I had paid for the bicycle and was picking it up in the Walmart, 4101 N Vermilion St, Suite A in Danville, IL. After testing the two other women’s 26”, 7 speed bicycles, I did chose the Margaritaville for the seat and the positions fit better.
However, when I was riding around the garden section on it, I didn’t turn fast enough and the bike was headed into a display. When I applied the brakes, the right brake handle broke. That is the one that stops the rear wheel. I am not really that strong, but the brake handle broke very easily. When I looked at it, I could see that it was made from pot metal.
I have had experience with garden shears that are made out of pot metal and them breaking. That is not very dangerous, but when a bicycle brake handle breaks that is dangerous. I am very glad that it broke in the store, for the bike assembler took it and put on a new set of handles made out of stronger metal, probably steel. However, that could have been a different story, IF I had been going down a hill at 20 MPH. I may have been frightened severely, injured, disabled or killed.
Thus for the safety of bicycle riders, please recall any bicycles with handles that are made of pot metal. They should not be used on bicycles. Steel or other metal handles should be required on bicycles.
After getting the handles changed to stronger metal, I enjoyed my 500-mile ride across Illinois and across most of Missouri on the Katy Trail and saw the total solar eclipse in Augusta, MO. The woman’s 26” 7-speed Margaritaville bicycle is a great ride, the rear rack and basket are very handy. In summer 2016, I did 400 miles in PA and MD on a man’s Margaritaville 26” 7-speed bicycle. My only complaint with it was that the bar was too high at the end of the day, and I couldn’t get my leg over and fell twice, so that is why I went with the woman’s version in 2017.
The brake handles were a defect that needs to be changed.
