The product, in the report: bicycle stem

The submitter is a service manager at Bike Works.

Sometime in the spring of 2015 a customer visited Bike Works to have his Napalm carbon stem installed. The customer did not purchase the bicycle stem from Bike Works.

On 10/9/15 the customer took the bicycle stem to Bike Works with the front plate bolts having ripped the nuts from the stem body. The submitter states the handlebar became disconnected from the stem, resulting in complete loss of control of the bicycle and a substantial crash. The submitter states the customer sustained a fractured rib and bruises. The submitter states the stem is one of the big 3 components that failure could result in crash, injury, or death. The other 2 are the handlebar and fork.

The incident occurred on 10/8/15 at the San Felasco Hammock Preserve State Park. The submitter states the customer was riding for about 30 minutes before he crashed. The customer was seen by a physician.

The submitter contacted the firm on 10/16/15 and left a message. The submitter received a call back from [REDACTED] on 10/20/15. [REDACTED] advised the submitter to send the bicycle stem so it can be examined. [REDACTED] asked the submitter what assistance the customer wanted but the submitter advised [REDACTED] to contact the customer.

The submitter believes the bicycle stem is unsafe. The submitter is in possession of the bicycle stem.

    The submitter added:

I’d like to report an unsafe bicycle stem. I was recently presented with a Napalm carbon stem, made by Loaded Bicycle Components of San Diego, CA. My customer brought me the stem ($249.99 msrp) this morning with the front plate bolts having ripped the nuts from the stem body. The result was the handlebar became disconnected from the stem, resulting in complete loss of control of the bicycle and a substantial crash. The stem is one of the big 3 components that failure could result in crash, injury, or death. The other 2 are the handlebar and fork.

    I’ve attached a couple pics.

This is the first product I have ever reported, so I’m not sure what other info you need. Please contact me if you need further info. -- JD Service Manager Bike Works Gainesville, FL 352-225-3585 www.gobikeworks.com
