The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

Made Sep 3, 2021, sent to the company Oct 4, 2021, published by CPSC Oct 26, 2021

The product, in the report: Kent Kids, girl’s bicycle

The consumer and her 9 year old daughter, were riding their bicycles, when the daughter’s handle bar suddenly flipped backwards.

The daughter tried to grab the hand brake, but was not able to. They were riding on a paved surface and the child ended up crashing into a brick wall.

The 911 emergency was called and the daughter was taken to The Lady of Lourdes Hospital ER, in Binghamton, NY. Her right wrist and arm (below the elbow) were deformed. Surgery was performed that night and the daughter was released. The consumer took her daughter back the very next morning, so that a “scheduled” 2nd surgery could be performed on her injuries. The daughter was released under medical care for the 2nd surgery.

Medical treatment was performed on the arm and wrist the first night. Both were operated on again, the following day, because the bone had to be put back in place.

(2020) Initially, the consumer contacted the retailer. Their staff told her that they receive the bikes from the manufacturer and they are not assembled, when received. The manufacturer provides the tools to assemble the bikes and the retailer’s staff assembled this bike. She filed an injury report with the retailer and they reported this to their insurance company.

The consumer then contacted the manufacturer and filed a report with them. Their Rep.[REDACTED] told the consumer that they would cover her medical expenses. He provided that information verbally and by text. However, the consumer never received any compensation towards her daughter’s medical care.

The daughter has recovered. The consumer was focused on caring for her daughter and has recently felt comfortable taking time to talk about this incident.

The product, in the report: 20” boys bicycle

Performing maintenance on a 1-year-old bike, found a critical part that was manufactured poorly likely leading to a safety issue.

the specific issue is that the nut that holds the handlebars to the bike is not completely threaded, but has just enough to get almost tight (initially assembled by the retailer), but when fully tightening it stripped the threads from the bolt and renders the item unusable. Without tightening it could easily have resulted in my 8-year-old son losing control of his bike

The product, in the report: Kent 20-inch girls Shimmer bike

My daughter’s bicycle has a chain guard that is made of extremely flimsy metal. Since she first used the bike, the metal has started to bend out of shape and has rubbed on the chain, sprocket and pedals. More recently, the bent chain guard caught on the pedal arm, resulting in her crashing on her bike causing scrape and bruise injury.
